ALLEN, Lisette: Elena's conquest . 11388(1) TB. Black Lace, 1994. Read by Marie McCarthy, 8 hrs 10 mins. This book contains some passages of a sexual nature which may be considered offensive. Set in the 11th century, the heroine, 22 year old Elena, lives in the peaceful but uneventful world of the convent. Just as she is developing an interest in the opposite sex, the convent is besieged by Norman soldiers. She is chosen to satisfy the savage desires of the masterful Lord Aimery but, once captivated by him, is horrified to learn that a rival for his affections already resides within his castle. ASIMOV, Isaac: The positronic man ; Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg. Pan, 1993. Order No. X7700, 7 or 2 cassettes. Based on Asimov's classic short story, 'The bicentennial man', the hero NDR113 is no ordinary robot. Intended to perform only menial duties, he demonstrates artistic and scientific talents which help him achieve some of his objectives. Andrew Martin, as he is now known, must still strive to attain true human status... BERENDT, John:

Landfill converted to transfer station
Garbage being compacted at Maynard waste facility
By Monica Whitney - Journal Staff Writer Last week, the Maynard location officially became a transfer station, in which garbage deposited there will be compacted and then transferred off-site by Canadian Waste of Brockville. People will no longer travel up the hill at the Maynard site to deposit household garbage, but will now dump it in a bin for compacting, which will be trucked away twice weekly. The bin has a capacity of about 10 tons of compressed trash. Township Councillor Doug Barton, who is also chairman of the waste management committee, said this one change alone will save taxpayers' money and be safer for the environment. Council made the decision a year ago to switch to a transfer station after Ministry of the Environment studies indicated the site had reached its capacity. Expanding the site to incorporate ministry safety guidelines was considered financially prohibitive and not environmentally friendly. A recycling depot at Maynard will accept cardboard, box board, paper, plastic containers, metal and aluminum food and drink cans, coloured and clear glass. Window glass and dishes will not be accepted. General waste that can be deposited in the recycling centre includes propane tanks, scrap metal, tires and white goods. Allowable hazardous wastes include fluorescent light tubes, batteries, motor oil, paint, varsols and gasoline.
