Croatian proverb (see [ Kuhac The first Croatian neum manuscripts for church music date from the 11th century. The Osor Evangelistary (1080-1082) from the convent of st. Nikola in Osor (island of Cres) is written in beneventana, ornamented by Monte Cassino initials, and accompanied with old neums. This evangelistary contains among others a prayer for the Pope, for Byzantine tsar, and for the King which at that time was factual ruler of Osor (regis nostri) - Crotian King Zvonimir. The evangelistry is held in the Vatican Archives. Some of the Christmas folk songs from the 12th century are still very popular. It is interesting that the Croats have more than 500 (five hundred) Christmas carols. There are Christmas verses that can have a dozen of different melodies, varying considerably from region to region. The number of Christmas carols is surprisingly large even in world's proportions. A special place in the history of Croatian music has the Glagolitic church singing . The earliest mention of glagolitic singing in Croatia is already from the year 1177 , when Pope Alexandre III visited the town of Zadar, known for its very old and fruitful glagolitic tradition in Croatia . Click here for audio of Episode 630. Today, a genius takes pleasure in a world of his own making. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. H ere's a Gainsborough painting. It's a man in his 40s with a fine, clear-eyed face. He's someone you'd like to know. But who is he? A second miniature version of the painting finally turned up in 1973. It had his name on it. He's John Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, born in 1735. As a young man he worked in Paris as a mathematical-instrument maker. He made clocks and other fine machines. Merlin's contemporary James Watt also started in that trade. Merlin was a mechanical prodigy. The Spanish Ambassador to England knew of him. He brought him to London in 1760. Merlin was soon running with Johann Christian Bach, Thomas Gainsborough, Samuel Johnson, and Horace Walpole. This mechanic may have run in fast company. But his work makes it clear that his genius was no pretense. He produced a whole set of museum-quality clocks and watches. He built a "perpetual motion machine" that ran on atmospheric-pressure changes. He built wheelchairs and weighing machines. He invented an early roller skate. He made robots.

JOSEPH SMITH LAMB Son of Abel Lamb and Almira Merrill Written by Harriet Jane Lamb Stradling
Some time after the organization of the Church, Brigham Young went on a mission to Canada, during the course of which he went down into New York State. While there he called at the home of the Lamb family. They were deeply impressed by his eloquence and sound doctrine and accepted the gospel after careful and prayerful investigation. In gratitude to the missionary, they named their next child Brigham Young Lamb. They had been members of the Church for three years when their sixth son and seventh child was born. He was named Joseph Smith Lamb in honor of the Prophet.
During his infancy the family moved to Missouri, only to be driven out in the expulsion of the Saints from that place. Little Joseph’s early years were spent in moving from place to place with his parents as they heeded the call of the Church in those troubled times. They were privileged to have the Prophet and his brother, Hyrum, visit their home. They were witnesses to the building up of Nauvoo the Beautiful, from which they were driven by mobs. Joseph was seven years old when the family arrived in Salt Lake City. At first they lived in the Eighth Ward, and he helped his father in the cooper shop, learning the trade in his youth. Being gifted musically, he learned to play the violin very well. In fact, Brigham Young once said that Joseph Lamb was his favorite dance fiddler.

Figure 1.Grisha is seen here at age 5, it would have been about 1924. He has a child's size violin. He wears a sailor suit, a popular child's style at the time. Image courtesy of Gladys Chase.
Family
Grisha came from a musical family. His father played the violin and always had good music playing (at the beginning, on his crank-arm victrola). His mother also wanted to learn the violin as a child but family finances made it impossible for her to do so. He had numerous relatives in music and the arts. His maternal grandfather (the one who fled the Tsar's Army) was a violinist and made it his life's work. He was the father of Lennie and Agnes Niehaus, the music arranger, and Agnes, the concert pianist. His sister was a concert pianist, another cousin was an opera singer, and another an artist (twice nominated for an Oscar for his work in the film industry), and another uncle who played the violin professionally.
Siblings
Grisha had a brother and sister. Gladys was about 4 1/2 years younger than Grisha, the youngest in the family. Gladys remembers her brother fondly, "He was such an amazing child, it was a rare blessing that I was born his sister to see him growing up and also as an adult." His sister also remembers that the family moved a great deal. " Our family moved several times, to my memory we lived in California (Stockton, San Francisco, and Los Angeles). We did, however, spend a great deal of time in San Francisco. When he would go to Europe, it was from the east coast (New York primarily). At such time the rest of our family (there was also another brother) would move to the west coast where our mother's family lived). When he returned to the U.S., we moved back to the east coast. (I went to 16 different schools between the two coasts by the time I reached the 6th grade.)" [Chase]

Johannes Brahms Violin Concerto in D, op. 77 Brahms, like his predecessor Beethoven, wrote only one violin concerto, also in the key of D major. Described once by the distinguished Viennese musician Joseph Hellmesberger, as ³Beethoven¹s heir², Brahms himself declared that ³To follow in Beethoven¹s footsteps transcends one¹s strength.² Although it is indeed safe to say that Brahms¹ concerto would not have existed without Beethoven¹s example, the story of its influences is far more intricate. The name of Eduard Reményi invariably surfaces during a discussion of Brahms¹ violin concerto. A part-German, part-Hungarian violinist who was once soloist to Queen Victoria, Reményi rescued a young Brahms from piano-playing in taverns by engaging him as his accompanist on a tour throughout Germany in 1853. Although their partnership was brief, the collaboration proved significant: Brahms was introduced to the Hungarian and gypsy folk music that Reményi played so well, eventually leading to a whole category of

Time has a fascinating way of imprinting the mind and soul with memories and impressions that, when reduced to their simplest form, become part of the fabric of one¹s musical and emotional being. In preparing to record an album of short pieces this became a strong musical consideration. What shall I play? Do I focus on the range of my interpretive style? Do I choose repertoire that shows the lyrical, the virtuosic or the diversity of musical character? In the early part of my career, when faced with such considerations, I would have no doubt contemplated all of those elements. However, when thinking about the material for this particular album I instantly recalled the memories and impressions of works played by the most beloved violinists of my youth. Yes, it may be sentimental and nostalgic, but indeed the time was ripe for me to look back to those special moments and to make them part of my recorded legacy. So, rather than offer you more of the same historical information in the form of liner notes, I have chosen to share with you some of my personal feelings

I wish respectfully to inquire whether you...could make me a loan of five thousand Finnish marks, to be repaid on the following terms: One thousand in 1911, and two installments of two thousand each in 1912 and 1913. The payments would be made by November each year. I have taken the liberty of embarking on making this request to you in the light of your well-known, warm helpfulness towards all artists... ". Very good. These years were transitional for Sibelius: he had moved his home to the country, was in the midst of touring in England, and had commenced work on his fourth symphony, a much darker score than his previous efforts had yielded. Fine condition.

  • GOLDBERG Early Music Magazine
  • Recently we received Issue No. 7 of GOLDBERG Early Music Magazine [Revista de Musica Antiqua]. As before, it is nothing short of breathtaking. This is a major publication. Large, generous format, beautiful papers, luscious color printing, a roster of writers, some of whom will be familiar to you, with a whole lot of Spanish surnames giving us the idea of that old music is popular in Spain... this magazine continues to be more than I bargained for. Every page is bilingual; Spanish and English tests are distinguished by their typefaces, so clumsiness is averted completely. Glancing through the index, this issue starts off with The Best of 1997, listing picks by each of Goldberg's eight staff reviewers. Some fairly predictable picks include Ton Koopman's Bach Cantata series (Erato), Alessandrini's Monteverdi madrigals (Opus 111), and the Telemann Paris Quartets by the Kuijkens, with Leonhardt (Sony). More surprising are a Telemann Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus by the Rheinische Kantorei/Hermann Max (Capriccio), or the anonymous St Matthew Passion from the Uppsala Ms (1667) (Accord), by Martin Gester's Parlement de Musique. Anonymous 4 got the nod for their 11,000 Virgins (harmonia mundi). There's an article about Michel Bernstein's label Arcana (annoyingly, presently unavailable in the US!) and about

The bridesmaids and I have been busy putting together the programs and favors. Joseph and I have been running all over town doing last minute errands. We've paid all the deposits on the honeymoon and picked up the tickets! We're getting the marriage license this weekend. I cannot wait to marry him; I can't believe how fast this engagement has gone! Hope you check back on our post-wedding site for all the details of our big day and for pictures from our honeymoon! July 10, 2001 It's only 17 days away! There are so many little details left to be done. The ceremony music has finally been decided and the musicians are ready for the big day. Now, Ashley will put the programs together for the ceremony. We've got to make some decorations and favors, too, but the big decisions are out of the way now. We decided on the menu with the caterer. We've ordered the rental equipment for the reception (chairs, tables, etc.). We will begin decorating for the reception on Thursday before the wedding. Luckily, Mom is getting lots of help from friends to help decorate the gym.

    • Father of the Symphony; Composer of the "London" Symphonies
    • Known as "Papa" Haydn
Joseph Haydn is considered a prominent member of the Viennese Classical school and a leading composer of the 18th-century Classical period, along with composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Regarded as the father of the symphony , "Haydn’s career is a story of many years of hard work, steady development, and ultimate fame and fortune" (Kerman 399). Haydn's Childhood In 1732, Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, a village of southern Austria. Haydn came from a poor family who highly valued music. His brother, Johann Michael (1737-1806), also became a composer and worked for the Archbishop of Salzburg. Though his parents did not have any formal musical training (his father made wagon wheels for a living), the family included music as a natural part of life. As a young boy, Joseph learned folksongs and peasant dances from his parents. His father also played the harp while his mother sang. The music Haydn experienced as a child in an impoverished village later played an important role in the style of his compositions. Haydn commented on his modest childhood: "Young people can see from my example that something still may come from nothing. What I am today, moreover, is the product of utmost poverty" (qtd. in Downs 199). Influencing such composers as
