July 27th - Review Chamber music is summer festival's focus By TOM STRINI Journal Sentinel music critic Last Updated: April 30, 2001 Cellist Stefan Kartman and pianist Jeannie Yu could spend their summers playing at a nice, quiet music festival in some woodsy or seaside locale. Instead, they'll run their own Milwaukee Chamber Music Festival, June 24 through July 30. It will be more musical boot camp than vacation for them and the 40 students who participate. "The contact with the faculty will be intense," Kartman said. "The student/faculty ratio is very low, 12 to 40. We sit down and play with these kids. The one thing we don't do is put them on stage in orchestra concerts, which other festivals use to bring in the money. There needs to be someplace where they can do just chamber music. That's what separates us." Kartman and Yu, husband and wife and soon to be parents, came to Milwaukee last fall. He is the new faculty cellist in the music department of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and she teaches at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Violin Claire Chan, violin Ms. Chan has collaborated with several award-winning chamber music groups. The Essex Quartet, managed by Columbia Artists Management, was supported by a grant from Chamber Music America and a residency at Rutgers University. The Beijing String Quartet won first prize in the China National String Quartet Competition. The Beijing Chamber Players performed in the auspicious venues of the Forbidden City Music Festival and the Beijing Concert Hall. The Kneisel Trio held summer residencies at the MidAmerica Chamber Music Institute in Ohio and is currently at the Troy Public Library Chamber Music Institute in Michigan. Ms. Chan, born in Detroit of Chinese parentage, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown University, where she earned musical honors and a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. She earned a full scholarship from The Juilliard School as a student of Joseph Fuchs, where she completed both her master's and doctoral degrees. She taught at the Juilliard School as an assistant to both Professor Fuchs and the Juilliard String Quartet. She also taught for several years in Beijing at the Central Conservatory and the Capital Normal University. Ms. Chan performs primarily in the U.S. and China. Memorial Resolution DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR JOSEF GINGOLD Josef Gingold was born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia, on October 28, 1909 and started playing the violin at the age of three. It was not an easy life for the Gingold family before they arrived in the United States in 1920. They were incarcerated in a German internment camp during World War I. However, Gingold always spoke with optimism and cheerfulness when discussing his difficult early years. He studied in New York with Vladimir Graffman, who had been a student of the famous Russian teacher, Leopold Auer. He continued his studies in Belgium for three years (1927-29) with the legendary Eugene Ysaye. During that time he played many concerts in Belgium, Holland and France, and a brilliant career was his for the taking. However, when he returned to the U.S., the country was mired in the Great Depression and he became the supporter of his family by playing many Broadway shows and performing other commercial work in New York. In 1934 he married the violinist Gladys Anderson his beloved "baby doll." In 1937, he became a charter member of the NBC Symphony when it was formed under the direction of Arturo Toscanini. He remained there for seven years and throughout his life he spoke of the great impact Toscanini had on his musical life. He was a member of the Primrose Quartet, which recently has had its recordings re-released to critical acclaim. He left the NBC Symphony to become the concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony. After three years in Detroit he joined the Cleveland Orchestra at the invitation of the great conductor George Szell. Unknown to Gingold, Szell had singled him out as a potential concertmaster when he had guest conducted the NBC Symphony where Gingold was a member of the first violin section. During his thirteen years in Cleveland the orchestra developed from a fine ensemble into one of the best orchestras in the world.

National Dress Festival a hit The event which has fast become one of the most anticipated and well attended activities to mark the island's independence anniversary was held last Sunday at the National Cultural Centre with standing room only. The National Dress Festival initiated in 1993 by the Helen Folk Dancers had pre-schoolers as its premier participants. The idea of seeing young people dressed up in the island's national wear took root and since then the festival has included primary and secondary schools, as well as community organisations. The event is not a competition but a fashion display of national formal and casual wear for St Lucian ladies, with the use of varying fabric patterns and exquisite lace. Sunday's show got off to an unprecedented late start but the Helenites Trio warmed up the appreciative crowd with renditions of "Beautiful St Lucia" and an original selection. Josef Haydn Haydn's life was a long, sane and, on the whole, fortunate existence. For many years he remained obscure, but if he had his time of trial he never experienced a time of real failure. With practical wisdom he conquered the fates and became eminent. In the history of art his position is of the first importance. He was the originator of the string quartet and of the symphony and he established the basis of the modern orchestra. Without him Beethoven would have been impossible. Franz Joseph Haydn was born on the last day of March, 1732, at Rohrau, a small town on the confines of Austria and Hungary. His father was a cartwright and his mother before her marriage had been a cook in the family of Count Harrach, the lord of the village. The father united to his trade the office of parish sexton. He had a fine tenor voice, was fond of the organ and music in general. On one of those journeys which the artisans of Germany often undertake, being at Frankfort0on-the-Main, he learned to play a little on the harp and in holidays after church he used to play this instrument while his wife sang. The birth of Joseph did not alter the habits of this peaceful family. The little domestic concert was repeated every week and the child sawed an accompaniment on an improvised fiddle. A cousin of the cartwright, whose name was Frankh, a schoolmaster at Hainburg, came to Rohrau one Sunday and assisted at the trio. He remarked that the child, then scarcely six years old, kept the time with astonishing precision, and as he was well acquainted with music he proposed to his relations to take little Joseph to his home and to teach him the first elements of music.
