http://www.alkansociety.org/events.htm Archive of Israeli Music
While not providing full biographical descriptions, this finding aid to the Archive of Israeli Music at the Tel-Aviv University, David and Yolanda Katz Faculty of Arts, provides an excellent listing of Israeli musicians. It includes birth date and place of birth, major musical interests, a death date if any, when the person came to Israel, and a listing of major holding items in the archive. For an immediate, if modest, amount of biographical information for getting started with Israeli musicians, this listing is very helpful. The actual holdings in the Archive will, no doubt, reveal much more information about each composer and musician.

Folk Literature of the Sephardic Jews
Many of you will be thrilled to learn that UC Davis, as part of the Digital Libraries Initiative, has mounted much of the archive online from the collections of Samuel Armistead, Joseph Silverman and Israel Katz. Armistead, of course, did one of the largest bibliographies and collection of Sephardic materials, starting nearly 50 years ago. This is an online bibliography, but also a searchable database of recorded music, field recordings, oral history and oral literature. It is truly remarkable. There are transcripts to follow while you listen to the field recording excerpts! It's keyword searchable in Spanish. There are also extensive histories online and other explanatory notes and articles full text. Try it, it's incredible. This is for everyone interested in the Sephardic heritage.

The Palestine Symphony Orchestra
The Palestine Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1936 under the leadership of Bronislaw Huberman. Huberman, a violinist, at first envisioned an international center for the arts, but instead focused on developing a critically acclaimed symphony orchestra. Conditions in Europe had become such that the orchestra could serve as a haven for persecuted Jewish musicians. Many immigration certificates became available, as the orchestra could provide employment for the refugees. The new immigrants themselves provided fresh talent and energy for cultural pursuits in the yishuv. While Huberman continued to work on behalf of the orchestra, Arturo Toscanini agreed to become its first conductor. He was quick to help establish the orchestra's reputation. In addition to drawing talented musicians to the orchestra itself, many other chamber orchestras and groups formed throughout the yishuv. In 1948, the orchestra changed its name to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. 30,000 subscriptions were sold for its current season. The picture presented here is that of Huberman and Toscanini.

The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design is known for its outstanding program and fine artists. The name Bezalel comes from the Bible (Exodus 35:30); Bezalel, son of Uri, was appointed to oversee the construction of the Tabernacle.

OUR HISTORY 1932 was a momentous year for Sydney. The Sydney Harbour Bridge, an engineering miracle of the day was opened in March. In July 1932 the Australian Broadcasting Corporation was established, and with it the group of musicians that would become the Sydney Symphony. The Orchestra consisted of just 24 players, who performed incidental music for radio plays, music for the dinner hour and broadcasts of concert repertoire. The first significant concert event in which the orchestra took centre stage occurred in 1934, when the renowned Irish conductor Sir Hamilton Harty visited Australia which led to calls for the creation of a permanent concert orchestra for Sydney. A forceful new group of ABC managers increased the size of the Sydney orchestra to 45 players, augmented to 70 for public performances, and inaugurated annual concert seasons in 1936. Political instability in 1930's Europe saw many leading artists spending large amounts of time in Australia. Fine performances were given under the direction of Georg, Antal Dorati and Sir Thomas Beecham. Soloists appearing with the Orchestra included Artur Rubinstein, Bronislaw Huberman and Artur Schnabel. During the war, despite the near impossibility of buying strings or instruments, the Orchestra was a source of inspiration and solace to enthusiastic servicemen. The number of women in the Orchestra increased to 32 in 1942 from a pre-war total of 20.

Deathbed confession reveals perfect heist
1939 violin theft lives on in courts HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Julian Altman wore a bulky overcoat the night of Feb. 28, 1936. He slipped it on over his white satin gypsy blouse and baggy black Cossack pants. He may have even put some gloves on his delicate musician's hands. Then he put some fine cigars in his pocket. He told a lie, went out into the cold, clear night air and, accompanied by the strains of great music like in an old movie, committed the perfect crime. Altman slipped into the Carnegie Hall dressing room of the Polish virtuoso Bronislaw Huberman and stole his Stradivarius as the violinist was performing on stage with his other prized instrument. It is a crime that sounds today, to quote a Connecticut judge, "more dramatic than the most contrived TV mystery show.'' And it is a crime that lives on today in a '90s kind of way - in litigation before the Connecticut Supreme Court, where Altman's daughter and widow are fighting for the $263,000 "finder's fee'' awarded when the violin was finally returned to its insurer. Altman told no one of the theft but played the violin for years - in the swanky martini clubs of New York and later in less elegant, smoke-filled nightspots until his imprisonment for molesting a child and his death in 1985.

A new style of Commerce Central European immigrants also made an impact in the world of commerce. As early as the period between 1931 and 1937, the number of wholesale businesses grew from 194 to 423, but the immigrants were most influential in the field of retail sales, both as merchants and consumers. The development of commercial life, the refinement of the public’s taste and the rise in the standard of living led to a burgeoning of auxiliary industries, such as window-dressing, product design and advertising. This change was reflected in a big number of signs and posters in the city streets. Industry Health Pioneering Social Workers The Legal Profession Arts and Music Enriching the Arts Musical Renaissance Civil and Military Service Military Distinction The Central European immigrant who served in the most senior position in the Hagana was Siegmund von Friedmann (later Eitan Avissar), who rose to the rank of deputy chief of general staff. Upon the outbreak of World War II, many of the immigrants from Central Europe enlisted in the British army. Some of them wanted to settle accounts with their persecutors or avenge their humiliation. All of them enlisted in order to defend the land of Israel. Many graduates of Youth Aliyah joined the Palmah. Most served in the Palmah’s “German Platoon”,commanded by Shimon Avidan of Kibbutz Ein Hashofet and subsequently by Yehuda Ben Horin of Kibbutz Hazorea. The platoon was established with the aim of operating behind German lines in the event of an invasion of Palestine. Immigrants from Central Europe also laid the foundation for intelligence research in the Israel Defense Forces and directed its work. The military experience acquired by the Central European immigrants in the Hagana and the British army enabled many of them to play a central role in the Israel Defense Forces during and after the War of Independence.
