Classical violinist Nigel Kennedy, who now goes by the name "Kennedy," is preparing to release The Kennedy Experience, an album of six movements, with each movement inspired by a specific Jimi Hendrix song.
For a brief period Kennedy spelled his name "Nyjil Kenidee" because he's such a Hendrix fan ... and he's dyslexic.
While he knows his audience may be rather select, Kennedy feels if his music inspires just one person to put on a dashiki, it's been worth it.

British violin sensation Kennedy straddles the classics
"Structures, not strictures" is Kennedy's description of the unusual Cornell Concert Series program he will present Monday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall. Juxtaposing works by Bach, Bartok and his own arrangement of songs by rock icon Jimi Hendrix, the British violinist with the single moniker will perform both as soloist and with the "Kennedy Collective," an ensemble comprising two guitarists, two cellists, double bass, flute and oboe. "As is the case with most musicians' recitals, I have chosen works which inspire me," notes Kennedy, "and I hope, mainly through my interpretations, but also because of the context in which I have placed all these works, to be able to shed new light on them. This is, after all, surely the function of an interpreting artist." Tickets for the concert at $25, $22, $19 and $16 for the general public and $15, $13, $11.50 and $9.50 for students and are on sale at the Lincoln Hall Box Office, 105 Lincoln Hall, 255-5144. Tickets may also be ordered via the Cornell Concert Series web site at http://www.arts.cornell.edu/ccs

This music genius is a patron of one of the orchestras that I am in, here at Oxford, called the Oxford University Chamber Orchestra. He graced us with his presence, in March 2001, and came to play the Elgar Violin Concerto with us at the Sheldonian. One word, only... AWESOME. Despite his crude and crass and somewhat shocking personality, this man is brilliant. I felt honored and so lucky to have met him and worked with him. The following bio was stolen from the emi classics website...
But first, some pictures taken after the concert:
I can't believe my eyes are closed!
For nearly twenty years, Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos and is, without doubt, one of the most important violinists Britain has ever produced. His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire.
As a child prodigy, Kennedy was Sir Yehudi Menuhin's most famous protege, studying first at the Menuhin School before moving to the Juilliard School of Music in New York to study with the celebrated teacher, Dorothy DeLay.
Throughout his career, Kennedy has undertaken major tours throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, the Far East, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, performing with the world's major orchestras and conductors; he has made appearances at the most important festivals in Europe and the United States. Major debuts include his 1977 London Royal Festival Hall appearance, performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, with the Philharmonia under Riccardo Muti, his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1980 and his New York orchestral debut in 1987.

Music season full of choices from September through next May The 1999-00 Music at Emory season offers diverse programming including popular favorites, cutting-edge artists and a full slate of performances from the Emory Chamber Music Ensemble. The new Candler Series at Glenn features the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma with Emanuel Ax, the Atlanta recital debut of soprano Barbara Bonney, pianist and conductor Philippe Entremont with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Atlanta debut of violinist Nigel Kennedy. Philippe Entremont has led the acclaimed Vienna Chamber Orchestra for more than 24 years. His Oct. 15 concert program will feature works by Mozart and Tchaikovsky, including Mozart's Piano Concerto No.12 in A Major (K. 414). The duo of Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax, who will be here Feb. 28, has earned three Grammy awards, and both artists have performed with every major orchestra in the world. A critic proclaimed their joint recital "one of the great musical occasions of a lifetime." British violinist Nigel Kennedy (April 3) attracts as much attention for his punk-rock looks as for his performing, but his musicianship is exceptional and his interpretations are fresh, according to music critics. For his Atlanta debut Kennedy will perform the Violin Concerto in A Minor by J.S. Bach and the Violin Concerto in D Major by Beethoven. Barbara Bonney, widely regarded as a superlative recital artist whose reputation has been shaped by her radiant tone and personality, appears often at the Metropolitan Opera. She will come to Emory Feb. 17.

Not many people are allowed to get too close to Nigel Kennedy's violin. So imagine the reaction when it was suggested to "stick" a microphone to the multi-million dollar instrument during his recent Australian tour.
EMI, the promoters of Nigel's latest CD "Kennedy Plays Bach", wanted to do a launch in the basement of Grace Bros' Sydney store. Naturally, they wanted the best possible sound and decided to use a pair of DPA4011 cardioids in typical recording mode - about a metre above the instrument. However this arrangement was not going to be suitable to feed a huge sound reinforcement system to woo the lunch time crowds into the store.
Enter Bob Scott, a well-respected sound engineer who immediately called for close miking of all the instruments, not only to prevent feedback but to help overcome the massive ambience of the adjacent food hall.
The DPA4060 was Bob's preferred choice for the job but some smooth talking was needed to convince Kennedy to allow it to be attached directly to the violin. As it turned out, Kennedy convinced himself that the 4060s should be used after hearing a recording of one of the rehearsal sessions. Nigel was so impressed with the sound that he has since bought his own 4060 mics and booked Bob to engineer some gigs during a European tour later in the year.

We associate Kennedy with Bach as often as we see him with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, but here he is with both, and he is found at his most urgently charismatic, backed by the superb strings of the BPO. Kennedy has a positive, often robust view of Bach, and approaches the finales at breathtakingly fast speeds. He has clearly undertaken some meticulous research as his playing reveals a scrupulous attention to details that are often glossed over.
