E LSIE S tockdale - Kennedy's Greatest Hits: 25th Anniversary Tour (London and Birmingham) Friday, October 4, 2002 and Monday, October 7, 2002 Both the Barbican and Symphony Hall are packed, all seats sold and the anticipation is palpable you can feel it and, if you stretch out a hand, you can touch it. From my seat, in the Circle at the Barbican and in the front stalls at Symphony Hall, I gaze around ; I'm struck by the number of children in the audience. For some reason, that makes me want to stand up and cheer before the concert has even started ! Fast forward: the Polish Chamber orchestra is seated, all instruments tuned and ready, and Nigel appears to ecstatic applause that suggests he doesn't even need to play a note in order to have us all eating out of his hand. For that is the way of it all through the performance. Nigel gives a good impression of someone not entirely with it as far as the program is concerned. "Now what?" he mutters, as they come to the end of one piece, and "Has anybody got a program?" he demands, and "This looks a bit familiar," when someone hands him one. But it is just an act . He is always in total command and we are his willing victims; he teases us, he torments us, he plays with us, and we delight in it, because when he's good and ready, he gives us exactly what we want and gives it with his whole heart and soul. At first I'm a little startled by the way the audience applauds completely at random, right in the middle of a piece. After all, I'm a politically correct Canadian, aren't I ?! But by the time we get to the end of the Bach concertos which open the concert (Concerto for Violin in A Minor and Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor) I begin to understand. I had been prepared for a live performance to be more exciting than listening to a CD, but I'm absolutely unprepared for the energy level, the sheer intensity of Nigel's playing and the matching intensity he evokes from the orchestra. The air is electric; I do believe I can actually see the sparks. I want to leap up and applaud in the middle of things too. After all, I paid enough for my ticket, didn't I ? Why shouldn't I clap when I feel like it ? And Nigel truly doesn't seem to mind !

Nigel Kennedy, the English violin virtuoso whose punk persona has made him one of classical music's most visible figures, has recently made it a little easier for people to talk about him: He's dropped the "Nigel." Will he take the next step in pop iconography and adopt an unpronounceable cipher as his name, as Prince has done? "No," he replies, "but I thought I might pinch his symbol and change a line to see if I could get into a legal dispute with him." The most image-savvy of instrumentalists is joking, of course; he knows the publicity value of such a stunt, but he has better things to do. With his spiky, two-tone hair, his quirky retro-fop wardrobe and his rock-star anticshe once laid waste to a luxury hotel room in BerlinKennedy's public demeanor is an implicit challenge to the staid character of the classical music establishment. But he's really more Puck than punk; he's not out to destroy anything but the rigid attitudes that pigeonhole music and musicians. And while he maintains a defiantly unpolished image in order to deflect labels and confound critics, his primary focus is on playing music and having a good time doing it.

On this CD, Paavo Jarvi and the Cincinnati Symphony offer lustrous, ebullient accounts of two of them. Jarvi's version of Petrouchka bristles with forceful rhythms that propel that piece - particularly its grand opening - at a remarkably brisk tempo. Even Stravinsky himself did not articulate the piece's folk-based themes and rhythms with such gusto as does Jarvi at the head of the charging Cincinnati players. On The Firebird Suite , the energy level subsides somewhat, but only to allow Jarvi to elucidate the shimmering textures and grand orchestrations that the young Stravinsky borrowed from his mentor, Rimsky-Korsakov. In both - and the splendid Scherzo a la Russe - the irrepressible Jarvi brings a new and welcome fervor to these familiar works.

Classical violinist Kennedy - the artist formerly known Nigel - has given the rock guitarist a complete makeover with the release of an album of Hendrix covers. The Kennedy Experience, says the musician, is "an album of music inspired by Jimi Hendrix. It is an extended instrumental work in six movements - each movement a classical interpretation of a Hendrix song". It features such Hendrix greats as Third Stone From The Sun, Little Wing, Purple Haze, Fire And Drifting. Nigel Kennedy: Hendrix is on a par with Bach But whereas Hendrix recorded largely as a trio with guitar, drums and bass, Kennedy's Hendrix is performed by an eight-piece classical ensemble featuring cello, acoustic guitar, flute, oboe, bass guitar and lead violin.

Mr Kennedy - the first Western musician to go to Yugoslavia since the Kosovo war - will appear with the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday. "I think it can help reconciliation, and hopes and aspirations," he said after Saturday's rehearsals. "I mean obviously I'm not that egocentric to think that music that I make is going to enhance everyone's life standard in any way whatsoever, except as a friendship gesture, and by playing the music of great composers (so) the visions of these composers can maybe give people a little bit more optimism." Mr Kennedy has played a benefit concert for Kosovar refugees He will not be accepting a fee for the performance at the city's Sava arts centre, describing his visit as a "non-political" gesture of support to the orchestra, with whom he last performed in December 1997. The musician travelled to Belgrade at his own expense, flying from Zurich because civilian flights to Belgrade have yet to resume from Britain.

Mikropolyphonie - The Online Contemporary Music Journal, Volume 7, 2001 Programming in the 21 st Century By Andrew Carlson , D.M.A. Assistant Professor of Music Denison University To most classically trained musicians, a “mixed” recital program would include western European “Art” music from a variety of historical periods arranged chronologically in order from oldest to most recent.  For instance, a typical violin recital presented at a university might possibly include some Bach, some Mozart or Beethoven, some Brahms, and perhaps a selection from the 20 th century (probably written no later than 1945).  By most musicological standards, this would be considered an acceptable program with great variety.  As the 21 st century unfolds, I believe that the “mixed” recital program will be expanded to include musics from outside the realm of “Art” music.  This will challenge the 21 st century musician to become fluent in a variety of musical languages (classical, folk, jazz, blues, etc.) and to select repertoire that will combine to provide the audience with a musically satisfying event.  In recent years, soloists throughout the world have begun to mix genres and styles within a single program.  To help predict the future of recital programming, both current trends and historical attitudes must be examined. The current model of a musicologically “correct” recital has certainly not always been the standard.  Musicians of the past were generally allowed greater freedom both in constructing programs and in the manner of their performance.   Arguably the most serious composer of classical music, Beethoven would regularly include improvisations based on popular and folk themes in his performances

Live Kennedy The Comeback Kid by Timothy Pfaff It’s a good thing that Kennedy’s playing speaks for itself, because it’s a difficult phenomenon to discuss sensibly. Both the playing and the player divide opinion, and not just in two. Virtually all the possible positions one could take have already been staked out and articulated. Sides have been taken. Meanwhile, the bad-boy behavior and angelic playing continue apace, and, evidence is, one preternaturally cheerful violinist is laughing all the way to the bank. Whatever the case, it’s not every artist who could achieve increased visibility by disappearing, which is precisely what Kennedy did in the early ’90s. Easily the most attention-getting thing he’s done—in a career that often seems to be about little else—was vanish. But even today, more than two years after his much-vaunted return, Kennedy’s five-year "sabbatical" from the classical concert stage is a move about which he’s notably circumspect. "I was stepping back from all other considerations and revisiting in my mind the reasons I wanted to be a musician in the first place," he says in a recent interview in San Francisco, where he is performing the Brahms Concerto with the Symphony. "I think music should be a spiritual experience, and if it gets taken over by a kind of technical formula of interpretation, or professional formula of presentation, then you’re no longer being the artist you wanted to be in the first place.

Violinists' Discographies on the Web The following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use.
