Friday, February 6, 1998 Punk violinist changes his ways LONDON Nigel Kennedy, the virtuoso violinist who shocked Britain's classical music establishment, has cast off his punk paraphernalia, taken a trip to the hairdresser, and relaunched a second career as a serious musician. After five years of silence, Kennedy, mellowed by fatherhood and the marketing wizards at his record company EMI is barely recognisable. To mark the change, he now wants to be known only by his surname. Hence, his new album is entitled simply Kennedy. ''He wants to be positioned as a first class violinist again,'' Theo Lap, managing director of EMI Classics, said. ''It wasn't a marketing ploy to change his name, but he does want to change people's perceptions,'' he added. Known in the 1980s as ''the punk violinist", Kennedy has not quite graduated to evening suits, but he has moved on from the distressed jeans look and unkempt hair. Now clean-shaven, he has toned down his language and no longer boasts to all and sundry of his love of beer and football. Brushing away charges that Kennedy is once again the victim of a make-over by marketing men, his agent Neil Storey declared: ''People simply change....but his ideals have not changed, his vision remains exactly the same.

A review from "New Hi-Fi Sound" (also British) Nov. issue: Kate Bush: The Sensual World EMI EMD 1010 Although neither a continuous piece, nor obiously conceptual, "The Sensual World" takes its lead from the vocal and textural experiments on side two of Kate Bush's last album, "The Hounds Of Love". To this end she has looked to the folk scene, currently and rather ironically the best place to find real instrumental innovation these days. Subsequently employed have been the services of bouzouki player Donal Lunny (ex member of the superb Bothy Band and last heard on Elvis Costello's "Spike" LP); Uilleann pipe player Davy Spillane (a prime mover behind Enya's "Watermark" album); Celtic harp player Alan Stivell; and her own brother Paddy Bush, who plays mandolin, whips (!) and a variety of obscure wind and stringed instruments.

Brits perform with the Sydney Symphony
Four high-profile British artists will be performing with the Sydney Symphony during the 2003 season. The British performers are tenor James Oxley (March 12,13,14), pianist Joanna MacGregor (July 8), soprano Susan Chilcott (November 5,7,8,10) and violinist Nigel Kennedy (December 6,8,9). The new season will be the tenth and last year for Dutchman Edo de Waart as the symphony's chief conductor and artistic director. For further information contact:

James Oxley makes his debut with the Sydney Symphony in Benjamin Britten's Serenade for tenor, horn and strings, which brings the immortal poetry of William Blake, John Keats and other English Romantics to life. The cool lyricism of the tenor lines meld with the glorious, golden solo horn, played by Sydney Symphony Principal Horn Ben Jacks. Distant voices of the Italian Renaissance are heard in Brett Dean's contemporary evocation of music by Carlo Gesualdo. Finally, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, dubbed 'the apotheosis of the dance' remains, almost 200 years after its premiere, an intoxicating experience. BRITTEN Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings

A Violin Upside the Head
Violin superstar Nigel Kennedy make a comeback
By Christine Jayarajah
A Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) concert recently featured violinist Nigel Kennedy. Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos for nearly twenty years. He recently dropped his first name, Nigel, to become simply Kennedy - very much in the style of a pop icon, say critics. His multi-award-winning discography includes Vivaldi's The Four Seasons - which earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the best selling classical records of all time. The charismatic violin virtuoso has brought fresh perspectives to both classical and contemporary repertoire. Kennedy has returned to the international concert stage after a five-year sabbatical, and is now in the midst of his American tour. Throughout October, he appeared in several major cities, including Toronto, as soloist in the Brahms violin concerto. Currently, he is performing a series of Jimi Hendrix recitals, which opened in New York and will end in Vancouver. The TSO concert program at Roy Thompson Hall began with the TSO premier of Memento Mori by contemporary award-winning composer, Chan Ka Nin. In Latin, the phrase "memento mori" is a reminder of the inevitable death. Vibrant strings interspersed with eerie wind and percussion arrangements effectively cast a sonorous, exotic atmosphere with a lingering ending. The TSO, with guest conductor Bramwell Tovey, rendered a meaningful interpretation, where solemn and nostalgic sections contrasted with youthful and glorious ones. The sustained tone and repeated notes symbolized man's ultimate fate and the eternal.

Charlotte Church narrowly missed out on the Album of the Year award at the Classical Brits last night.
Her album, Dream a Dream, and Andrea Bocelli's Verdi were pipped by Mancunian tenor Russell Watson's debut album The Voice.
The Voice was also the Best Selling Album of the Year.
It topped an outstanding year for the former factory worker, who launched his classical career after he was spotted singing Nessun Dorma in a workingmen's club in his native Salford.
Watson became an overnight star when his debut album was released and has been widely credited with bringing opera to the masses.
But he missed out on the coveted Male Artist of the Year gong which went to the household favourite Nigel Kennedy.
Kennedy, who has now dropped the Nigel from his stage name, made up for last year's disappointment when beaten to the title by Welsh opera singer Bryn Terfel.

CONTROL PANEL BACK SIGN UP BBC Music Live Contributions by: Mark (Team USA) Adam, Simon, Stephen, Hannah (Team England), Mark (Team Netherlands) Summary by Stephen, Simon (Team England) Simply put BBC Music live was a celebration of the past present and future of music in the UK. Combining landmark 24 hour coverage with live outdoor concerts and events BBC Music Live was a one of a kind experience. Perhaps Bill Morris the director of BBC Music Live puts it best: " There seems little doubt that the UK grabbed hold of the BBC Music Live Festival and took ownership of it as their own celebration of music. Hundreds of thousands attended street festivals and concerts, and through projects like the drumming beacon and the amazing performance of 'Perfect Day', the festival proved that music has a unique power to bring people and communities together in shared celebration. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the many thousands of people in the BBC and hundreds of other organisations who helped to make it happen. "

Kennedy, the iconoclastic virtuoso hailed as "a violinist in a million" by the Daily Telegraph , has released the world premiere recording of The Kennedy Experience , based on the legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix's "3rd Stone From the Sun", "Little Wing", "Drifting", "Fire", "1983... The new CD ( SK 61687 Anticipation of The Kennedy Experience , a career-defining project for Kennedy, has been building for nearly two years, as he explained to Allan Kozinn of the New York Times . "I relate to Jimi Hendrix's material very strongly, because he had such big ears for so many different types of music. You can hear germs of jazz harmony, rhythm-and-blues, even a Celtic feeling in the melody structure. What I've done is deconstructed his composition and put them together in a totally different type of way. I've written out the parts for the other players, and I'm out there on a free mission, so to speak, in the same way that Jimi had lots of well-sorted-out rhythms going on that enabled him to be free."

Problem 6: Tips for teaching violin scales and arpeggios P roblem 6: Tips for teaching violin scales and arpeggios The majority of pupils, and indeed adults, find the prospect of learning scales a chore. I too found this to be the case, although once I had got to grips with a new scale, I would quite happily gaze through a window while repeating the same scale over and over again. This trance like state was relaxing, and I think it helped keep my nerves under control in an exam when it was time to do scales! There are various methods of actually learning a new scale or arpeggio. One can look at the music to start with in order to learn the key signature, and to work out the relative major or minor keys, which relate to it. This is the more academic approach, and although thorough, is unlikely to fire up any enthusiasm in the pupil.
