(1932) Directed by Ernst Lubitsch, assisted by George Cukor oeuvre Producer: E. Lubitsch. Screenplay: Samson Raphaelson. Based on the play Nur ein Traum, Lustspiel im 3 Akten (Only a Dream) by Lothar Schmidt. Cinematography: Victor Milner. Music: Richard A. Whiting, Oscar Strauss. Lyrics: Leo Robin. With: Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald, Genevieve Tobin, Charlie Ruggles. 35mm, tinted, 84 min. Preservation funded by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
THE SMILING LIEUTENANT
(1931) Directed by Ernst Lubitsch THE SMILING LIEUTENANT was Lubitsch's third musical in a row. Characteristically, his approach to the genre was a unique blend of the developing tradition of American musical comedy and the conventions of Viennese operetta remembered from his youth. Lubitsch's early sound films retained the musical integration (along with the far-fetched plot complications) of operetta, but added clever patter songs and the distinctly unoperatic delivery of music-hall performers like Maurice Chevalier. In this film, Chevalier is a Viennese lieutenant who is forced to marry a homely princess, despite his love for a beer-garden violinist (Claudette Colbert). Producer: E. Lubitsch. Screenplay: Ernest Vajda, Samson Raphaelson. Based on the operetta

    Susan Chan at Peace
    by Marvin J. Ward
She opened with Beethoven's two-movement Sonata in E minor, Op. 90, which, according to the excellent oral commentary the artist gave (as she did for every piece, there being no notes in the printed program about the works being played or their composers), was purportedly inspired by a love affair between a count and an actress. The first movement represents the battle between the head and the heart and the second, a conversation with the beloved. She gave a fine rendition.
This was followed by a transcription for piano by Harold Bauer (1873-1951) of César Franck's Prélude, fugue et variation, Op. 18, for organ, which Chan said one critic described as "a flight into the hereafter." This reviewer found this version, new to his ears, more enjoyable than the original which can seem tedious due to lack of variety and the lesser precision of the notes themselves resulting from the very nature of the instrument. Busoni's transcription of the Chaconne from the Partita in D minor for solo violin, S.1004, came next. It was superbly rendered.

    Barrese Possente Spirito
Possente Spirito " was written for an Italian Opera class that I attended in Milan. I thought it fit to end where we began, with the legend of Orpheus. The text is by A. Striggio from the opera Orfeo by Monteverdi. The part of Orfeo is intended to sound like a castrato. The two voice parts (either females or male falsettists) were conceived as vocal fractions with an instrumental quality to them. The oboe acts as a connecting unit betwen the purely instrumental sonorities of the guitar and the purely vocal sonorities of Orfeo, and the guitar is representitive of Orfeo's lyre, which he uses to influence Pluto. The piece is dedicated with much admiration to my composition professor in Milan, Dr. Roberto Andreoni. Jason

A Finding List of Northern California Composers
A Finding List of Northern California Composers at the Art and Music Center in the San Francisco Public Library is a listing of composers active in the San Francisco Bay Area, and Northern California since the 1840s. All names included may be found in previous dictionaries and directories, published and unpublished, from 1934 to the present. Each entry gives birth and death dates, when available, as well an abbreviated citation for further biographical information. If there is further information about a composer on the Internet, a link to that site is provided as well. Because the some citations are 35+ years old, many listings do not include death dates. This listing continues to grow. Biographical Sources Used Search for composer by the first letter of the last name. [A] [B] [C] [D] ...
