Send it to a friend! 8:50pm Sunday, June 29th on BBC-2 Since she was a student at the Guildhall School of Music in the early 1980's the violinist Tasmin Little has believed that there is an unknown, and deliberately buried, secret in the life of Frederick Delius - a secret fundamental to the development and proper appreciation of his music. It concerns a brief period in his early twenties spent in a malaria infested swamp region of northern Florida trying to establish an orange plantation for his father. Tasmin believes that while living almost alone in this remote area Delius had the most intense sexual affair of his life with one of the black girls who worked on the plantation. After he returned to England in 1886 Delius discovered that his black mistress had borne his child. Entirely dependent on his stern father and fearing social ostracism by the polite salon society whose approval he desperately needed if he was to win musical acceptance, Delius abandoned the girl and suppressed all knowledge of the baby. However a few years later, more secure in his place as a composer and no longer wholly financially dependent on his father, Delius returned to Florida to seek his former mistress and the child. He was tormented by a deep sense of loss. Frightened that he might want to remove the child and take it back to England, the girl fled and Delius never saw her again.

Born in London, she studied with Pauline Scott at the Yehudi Menuhin School, gained her Performance Diploma at the Guildhall School of Music, where she won the Gold Medal, and concluded her studies privately with Lorand Fenyves in Canada. She has performed with many of the world's great orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Berlin Symphony, London Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Hallé, Bournemouth, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Royal Danish and with conductors including Rattle, Masur, Ashkenazy, Järvi, Slatkin, Rozhdestvensky, Otaka, Menuhin and Andrew Davis. During the 2000/01 season Tasmin Little's performances include the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genoa with Abel, the London Philharmonic with Berglund and the Philharmonia with Atherton. Chamber appearances include a UK recital tour with Piers Lane culminating in a concert at the Wigmore Hall. She will also play with Wayne Marshall in both Manchester and Southampton. In March 2000 Tasmin Little performed the Ligeti Concerto with Sir Simon Rattle and the CBSO on tour, including concerts in London and Vienna, to huge critical acclaim. Later in the year they teamed up again for a performance of the Brahms Concerto at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. In 1996 Tasmin Little made her debuts in Australia and New Zealand and in July 1997 she gave a triumphant USA debut, at the Cleveland Orchestra's Blossom Festival with Leonard Slatkin. The following season, she made her New York Philharmonic debut with Neeme Järvi with four performances of the Tchaikovsky Concerto at the Lincoln Center.

Tasmin Little (pictured left with student Yannick Marchegay) is one of the world's leading classical violinists and is an acknowledged interpreter of the music of Delius, who came from Bradford. The centre was named after Tasmin three years ago, when she gave a fundraising concert. She plays a 1757 Guadagnini, has worked with many of the world's most distinguished musicians and conductors, including Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Yan Pascal Tortelier. Since her debut with the Hallé Orchestra in 1988, she has performed as a soloist with many internationally renowned orchestras. During the visit, Tasmin was accompanied by her family, including her father, the actor George Little. Tasmin said: "I have heard about great things being achieved at the Centre. It would seem as though the man were incapable of producing anything save masterpieces. The two works for violin and piano presented here are shining examples of Ravel’s flawless craftsmanship. Perhaps no composer of his generation has a more immediately recognizable harmonic and rhythmic language than Francis Poulenc. The violin sonata is Poulenc’s third attempt at the genre, who admittedly uncomfortable writing for solo strings, had destroyed two earlier attempts. Dedicated to Federico Garcia Lorca and the violinist Ginette Neveu, the work not only reflects the violence of conflict (specifically the Spanish Civil War) but also the tragedy of loss. When Miss Neveu met her untimely demise in an air crash in 1949, Poulenc extensively revised the piece as a reflection of his grief.
