    CRITICAL ACCLAIM
"The most exciting violin recital this listener has heard in quite some time. Mr. Markov's playing is marked by a Romantic effusion that comes so naturally it never seems vulgar or affected. He seems to have stepped directly out the past: although he is a young man - he plays like an old 78 recording come to life, without the pop and sizzle of shellac. Mr. Markov scoops and slides with an emotional intensity that has all but vanished from contemporary violin playing. Somewhere Mischa Elman is smiling."

Vieuxtemps: Violin Concertos Nos. 2, 4, 5 Alexander Markov, violinist; Monte Carlo Though less well remembered than such iconic figures as Paganini and Sarasate, Henri Vieuxtemps was among the most famous virtuoso fiddlers of the 19th century. And like his more illustrious colleagues, he was also a gifted composer; best known naturally, for fiendishly difficult concertos. In this century, Heifetz was Vieuxtemps' most celebrated exponent, but artists as varied as Vasa Prihoda and Sarah Chang have recorded his concertos. Now comes Alexander Markov, a Russian-born American, with volatile accounts of the Second, Fourth and Fifth Concertos.

Internationally celebrated violinist Alexander Markov has been hailed as one of the most captivating musicians. Lord Yehudi Menuhin has written " He is without doubt one of the most brilliant and musical of violinists…Alexander Markov will certainly leave his mark on the music-lovers of the world and in the annals of the violin virtuosi of our day " .
Alexander Markov has established a reputation second-to-none in the 19th-century virtuoso repertoire. His recording of Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin caused a sensation, and he remains one of the very few violinists who program the entire set in a single recital. A widely broadcast film of Markov playing the Caprices, directed by Bruno Monsaingeon, has won these fiendishly difficult pieces an instantaneous and enthusiastic following around the world.

The Russian way of making music may not dominate American string-playing style as it once did: but the emigre Markov family is, in its own way, helping to revive the Slavic tradition of big sound and broad Romantic expression.
The Markovs' principle advertisement has been their son, Alexander, who won the Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy. His progress and development have been distinctly a family affair.
The Markovs - father Albert, mother Marina and their son - emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1975, bringing with them a violinistic tradition, a pedagogical zeal and three strong performing talents. Mrs. Markov plays with the New York City Opera. Her husband has carried his solo career to this country and has also brought with him his deep interest in how the violin should be taught. The prime product of this work is Alexander, now involved in a promising career, who has no teacher except his father.
Young Mr. Markov's success in international competition is bringing him immediate attention in Europe. Genoa is Paganini's birthplace, and as part of his victory ceremonies there, Alexander played Paganini's own violin. Another part of the prize, a series of engagements across Europe.
    Eager for a New Career
The younger Markov is eager to get his career under way. "I don't just want to play at every opportunity." Alexander said "Too much playing makes you mechanical. I want every concert to be an event." "I was listed as a student at the Moscow Conservatory, " he said, "but I preferred to study with my father."

About Compositions by Albert Markov "Spartacus" Rhapsody for Violin and Orchestra. This piece is based on the themes of the Aram Khachaturian's ballet "Spartacus". In the 1960's, Markov regularly performed Khachaturian's violin concerto with Khachaturian as conductor. Their personal relationship inspired Markov to write "Spartacus" Rhapsody. In November 1967, Markov played his piece for the first time for Khachaturian and Khachaturian wrote on Markov's piano score to the publisher, "The Concert Piece of Markov is excellent. I ask to publish it." This performance is dedicated to mark the anniversary of Aram Khachaturian 100th birthday. "Souvenir de Vienne for string quartet was written in 2002 as Markov expressed his feelings about Vienna, the birth place of classical and modern music - a place of love and hatred.

Orchestra Philharmonic de Monte Carlo conducted by Lawrence Renes ERATO [65:12] full-price by Johann D'Souza Years ago I had listened to a recording of Jascha Heifetz playing the Vieuxtemps' Fifth Concerto and, as usual, he raced through it with lightning speed full of panache and total mastery. However, it was not until I had heard Elmar Olivero - the Tchaikovsky winner - that I actually bothered to find out more about the music of Vieuxtemps. There was something in his playing that immediately drew my attention to the music. I think it must have been the combination of violin wizardry together with the pathos of Chausson thrown in, together with the fact that all this was thrown in within 19 minutes. Other concertos seem by comparison, very long (eg. the Beethoven or Brahms concertos).
