AR46 January, 1991 No More Good News
As 1990 closes and the new year begins, the Worldwide Church of God (WCG) and its Ambassador College (AC) continue their steady decline under the leadership of Pastor General Joseph W. Tkach. Insiders say that for 1990 the WCG experienced less than zero financial growth. Important WCG news items since our last issue went to press include the following: • In his September 25 letter to WCG members and coworkers, Tkach shocked his followers by announcing that the WCG's weakening financial condition had caused him to kill the Good News , for decades the church's main theological magazine. The January 1991 issue is the final edition. According to Tkach, the WCG's more secular Plain Truth (PT) magazine will now become more religious in tone. But Tkach has also admitted that the PT's circulation is being pruned back. Whereas under church founder Herbert W. Armstrong (HWA) the PT had grown to a circulation of over seven million (and at almost double the current number of pages per issue), the PT's circulation in recent months has shrunk to 3.2 million, according to the official WCG newspaper, The Worldwide News (WN, Aug. 27, p. 3). During this past summer, church executives were already anticipating that the PT's circulation would drop to 2.3 million (ibid.). By late August the PT had already been phased out in areas of the Middle East, West Africa, "and other nations where we simply cannot sustain the circulations" (WN, Aug. 27, p. 1, quoting WCG executive Larry Salyer).

Jascha Heifetz RCA Victor Group Tools Print this article E-mail this article Subscribe to this paper By Mark Kanny TRIBUNE-REVIEW CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC Wednesday, December 5, 2001 "My mouth was open for a week. I couldn't believe what I was hearing," Itzhak Perlman says about encountering the wizardry of violinist Jascha Heifetz. Perlman's comment comes during tonight's broadcast of "Great Performances." The installment of "The Art of the Violin" offers Perlman as the typically genial and insightful host. The program continues a series that previously focused on conductors, singers and pianists, drawing upon archival sound recordings, films and videotapes to make famous names more of a reality for us today. Perlman says he is most impressed by the individuality of earlier generations of violinists, a point emphasized by a composite performance of Felix Mendelssohn's famous violin concerto.

Soovin Kim, violin
Summer Symphony Series July 7, 2002

Soovin Kim was only twenty years old when he captured first prize at the Niccolo Paganini International violin Competition in 1996. He was the first American in twenty-four years to receive this distinction. As a result, he was given the honor of playing one concert on "Il Cannone," Paganini's rarely played violin. One year later, he received the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award, leading to recital and orchestral engagements across Europe. He was again honored in 1998 with the Avery Fisher Career Grant.
In addition to his activities as a soloist, Mr. Kim is in great demand as a most versatile chamber musician. In February of this year, he was heard on "Performance Today", the well regarded NPR show with guitarist Jason Vieaux. He is a member of the Johannes Quartet and the string trio, "Divertimento." He regularly collaborates with the great musicians of the world such as pianists Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida, violinist Pamela frank, and members of the Guarneri Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio. He frequently participates in the Marlboro Festival in Vermont and tours the U.S. as part of the acclaimed "Musicians from Marlboro" program. He is also a member of Lincoln Center's chamber Music Society II.

My First Experience of Great Violins
by Cheniston K. Roland - Violin Historian My first experience with fine violins was at the age of 14. Musician friends took me to a recital by Mischa Elman. This was a great musical event at that time(1946) he was the first international violinist to visit my town after World War II. At the end of the concert we went to speak with Elman, when several people asked to see and possibly hold his violin. He very kindly allowed some of us to draw the bow over the strings and play a few notes - it was enough to change my life forever. I think Elman was using the `Swan' Strad on that evening. Since then I have spent an evening with David Oistrakh, who had with him his magnificent Strad. On another occasion I spent an afternoon with Wolfgang Schneiderhan who had two beautiful Strads with him that day. During the last fifty years I have played on any number of instruments by the best makers and have never lost the excitement of the occasion. Many international violinists have visited my home bringing with them as many wonderful violins, Bergonzi, Petrus Guanerius (two in one day) Techler, Amati, Pedrazini, Testore, Gragnani, Grancino, Gagliano, Guadagnini, Silvestre and many more.

Skriabin and Obukhov: Mysterium La livre de vie The concept of artistic synthesis. By Simon Shaw-Miller The aesthetic ambitions of the Russian composer Alexander Nikolayevich Skriabin (1871-1915) went far beyond a technical recasting of musical elements. His achievement was to extend the wider perspective of the Gesamtkunstwerk , into what one of his principle biographers has called ‘Omni-art,’ [ ] aiming to achieve ‘all-unity’ ( vse-edonstvo ). This concern with ‘extra-musical’ issues was also central to the aesthetic ideas of one of his followers, the much less well-known Russian composer Nikolay Obukhov (1892-1954). What an exploration of the art of the two figures uncovers is a synthetic impulse at the heart of modernist culture; an impulse that runs counter to the more familiar characterization of modern art and music as a retreat into purity. I shall argue that we need to adopt a broad approach to the work of these two figures in order to do justice to their aesthetic visions. For both of them their art was always more than ‘music alone.’ Skriabin found support for his aesthetic in mystic ideas, especially theosophy and Symbolism. He nevertheless remained an eclectic thinker, who sought justification for his aesthetic in a range of areas, while never fully adopting one particular doctrine. The one thing consistent in his ideas throughout their formation was a deep distrust of rationalism and positivism. He shared with Wagner a sense of validation in the imaginative and subjective drives of creativity, believing that true insight is intuitive. A supreme individualist, he nevertheless saw nature and imagination as a part of the same spirit, and through his art sought contact with the world external to the imagination. Art for him was an action, a process whose aim was to reach out to and affect life. As he described it, the ultimate aim of art was to bring about ‘oneness’ or ‘all-unity’, to resolve the parts into the whole, unity of the arts and unity of man with the cosmos.

Swan Lake (Kudelka)
(Greta Hodgkinson, Aleksandar Antonijevic, Rex Harrington)
Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto, Mar 1 2003
Given all the critical acclaim for the production since 1999, this is a surprisingly mediocre performance, especially in the first half. Scenes that should have been serene have too much distraction. The ensemble dances are often unnecessarily complicated and look chaotic at times. The White Swan and the Prince have not shown much emotion or passion towards each other, nor is the Black Swan particularly provocative.
This is bot a bad production though in terms of costume and set design. Certain cinematic treatments are impressive.

At the age of 22, American violinist and Grammy nominee Hilary Hahn has already established herself as one of the most accomplished and compelling artists on the international concert circuit. In the 2001-2002 season, Hahn toured the United States as soloist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam; made an extended recital tour of North America, Europe, and Japan; played Brahms with orchestras in Asia; and recorded concertos of Shostakovich and Mendelssohn for Sony Classical. Her American orchestral performances include return engagements with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Dallas Symphony, and debuts with the Boulder, New Mexico, and San Diego symphonies.
