Obituary: Yehudi Menuhin "Music is a therapy. It is a means of communication far more powerful than words, far more immediate, far more effective." Violinist Yehudi Menuhin, remembered as one of the 20th century's master musicians, died March 12 at a hospital in Berlin, where he was to have conducted the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra before he was taken ill. He was 82. He had pneumonia and died of heart failure, his London office said. Born April 22, 1916, in New York to Russian Jewish parents who emigrated from Palestine, Menuhin was an American citizen and a British subject. He was made a baron Lord Menuhin of Stoke d'Abernon in 1993. Four years after his violin debut at the age of 7 in San Francisco, he played at New York's Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. A few days before Menuhin's 13th birthday, Albert Einstein followed him backstage after a concert in Berlin and hugged him, exclaiming, "Now I know there is a God in heaven!" By 13, he had already won accolades in Berlin, Paris and London. During World War II, Menuhin gave 500 concerts for U.S. and Allied troops and for Red Cross funds, but he offended many Israelis by performing for Germans in Berlin only two years after the war. He said he did so to further tolerance and "the brotherhood of man."

Menuhin, Yehudi (22 Apr. 1916-12 Mar. 1999) , violinist and conductor, was born Yehudi Mnuchin in New York City, the son of Moshe Mnuchin and Marutha Sher Mnuchin, both Hebrew teachers and immigrants from Russia by way of Palestine. The family moved to San Francisco in 1918 and in 1919 changed the spelling of the name to "Menuhin" in hopes this would be easier for Americans to pronounce. Menuhin started violin lessons at age four and made his first public appearance in 1922 at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. His first important teacher was Louis Persinger, concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony. In 1925 Persinger moved to New York to concentrate on chamber music. With support from the San Francisco attorney and philanthropist Sidney Ehrman, Menuhin went along to continue his studies, accompanied by his mother and two sisters. Menuhin gave his first New York concert in 1926. That year Ehrman offered to sponsor musical training in Europe for Menuhin, who then embarked on studies in Paris with the Romanian violinist and composer Georges Enesco. In 1927 Menuhin's performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto in Carnegie Hall attracted national attention, and in 1928 he began recording and touring the United States. In 1929 he performed concertos by Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms in a single program with Bruno Walter and the Berlin Philharmonic, which was received as a triumph. The audience included

Primarily associated with classical music, Menuhin consistently sought diverse forums for his virtuosic playing. His collaboration with Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar resulted in two groundbreaking albums — East Meets West and In Celebration, while, his pairing with French violinist Stephane Grappelli Isaac Stern , Menuhin was 'an extraordinary musician and a great humanitarian. His style of playing, particularly in his early years, was a stunning patrician elegance with a very natural musical line.' Menuhin displayed a talent from music at a very young age. Starting to play the violin at the age of four, he made his professional debut with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra three years later. His performance of Beethoven's 'Violin Concerto' at Carnegie Hall, in 1927, sparked international acclaim. Menuhin's debut album, recorded at the age of sixteen, received the prestigious Prix du Disque in France. The oldest child of Russian-Jewish immigrants Moshe and Marutha Menuhin, Menuhin was still a baby when he moved with his family to San Francisco. A student of Louis Persinger, concertmaster of the an Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Menuhin advanced quickly on a violin. When Persinger moved to New York, in 1925, Menuhin and his family followed.

The Wilderness Society Media Release
Passing of renowned violinist and conservationist, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, mourned by Wilderness Society
Date: 16 March 1999
The Wilderness Society today joined an international chorus of condolences for the family of renowned violinist and conservationist, Sir Yehudi Menuhin who died on Friday aged 82. Sir Yehudi Menuhin was patron of The Wilderness Society from 1976 until his death. An outspoken critic of the destruction of native forests for woodchipping, Sir Yehudi was particularly passionate in his public defence of the tall eucalypt forests of Tasmania, forests that still remain largely unprotected. Acting Campaign Director for the Wilderness Society, Lyndon Schneiders, commented that "the world is a poorer place through the death of Sir Yehudi. Not only has the global community lost an exceptional musician, but also a committed and passionate conservationist. The Wilderness Society is honoured to have had such a universally respected person as its patron for the past two decades."
Comment by Wilderness Society stalwart Geoff Lambert: The Wilderness Society's Patron, Yehudi Menuhin has sadly passed away after 22 years as the head of the Society.

Menuhin has achieved a remarkable position as a world citizen with diverse interests apart from music; and as a violinist the purity of style and depth of interpretative power that he displays in his finest performances place them in the highest category. He has edited Bartok's Sonata for solo violin (London, 1947), one of the many works written for him; Walton's Sonata for violin and piano (London, 1950) written for him and his brother-in-law Louis Kentner; and Mendelssohn's early Concerto in D minor (New York, 1952). He is a Commander of the Legion d'honneur, a Knight of the Dutch Order of Oranje Nassau, an Hon. KBE and, among his many other honours and awards, received the Nehru Award for International Understanding.

Yehudi Menuhin Music Scholarship for Nigar
by Jean Patterson
Young Azerbaijani violinist Nigar Mirzayeva has won a two-year scholarship to attend the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School in Surrey, England. The 13-year-old completed the sixth grade at Baku's Bulbul School this past spring and is enrolled in the Menuhin School for gifted young musicians this September.
Left: Thirteen-year-old violinist Nigar Mirzayeva recently received a two-year scholarship to study music at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London.
Nigar [pronounced nee-GAHR] says that her parents, especially her mother, have been instrumental in developing her musical career. "I started playing the violin when I was seven," she says. "At the time, my older sister Gunel was learning to play the piano, and my mother wanted me to have a musical education as well. I really liked the violin, so we decided that I should try to learn to play that."
In 2000, Nigar had the privilege of taking Master Classes from world-renowned cellist Mstislav Rostropovich during his visit to Baku. She has also taken Master Classes from Dmitry Sitkovetsky, the son of pianist Bella Davidovich. Nigar has already performed with the prestigious Azerbaijan State Orchestra on seven occasions and given four concerts on her own.

“Today you have again proven to me that there is a God in heaven.” — Albert Einstein on Menuhin One of the foremost virtuoso violinists of our time, Yehudi Menuhin was more than a musician. He was an idealistic supporter of hundreds of charities and causes. When the legendary violinist died of a heart attack on March 12, tributes poured in. British Prime Minister Tony Blair called him one of the greatest musicians of his age. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised him as a tireless campaigner for world peace, human rights, the environment and the United Nations. An American by birth, Menuhin lived in Europe for most of his life. He described himself as an internationalist, and in the ’50s, he contended that peace would be achieved only under a single benign world government. In 1985, he became a British subject. He had been given an honorary knighthood by Britain 19 years earlier. Politics and visions of a utopian future often seemed to he as much on his mind as music making.

Mother of violinist Yehudi Menuhin dies here at 104
LESLIE KATZ Bulletin Staff Marutha Menuhin's life spanned continents and more than a century. Born in Russia to a kosher butcher, she lived in Palestine, New York and Petaluma before settling in San Francisco. Last Friday, the mother of acclaimed violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin died in Los Gatos at 104 after a short illness. Lionel Rolfe, son of Yehudi's younger sister Yaltah, recalls his grandmother as "a very, very strong-willed woman. My mother always said that if Marutha had stayed in Israel, Golda Meir wouldn't have had a chance." Marutha Menuhin, who attended the Herzliya Gymnasium in Tel Aviv, taught piano while living in Palestine. She passed her love of music on not only to Yehudi but to daughters Yaltah and Hephzibah, accomplished pianists who appeared with their brother in chamber music recitals and concert tours. By all accounts, including their own, mother and son shared a deep bond. "Theirs was an incredibly close relationship," says Rolfe, who wrote a book about his family titled "The Menuhins: A Family Odyssey." "He looked upon his mother as something akin to a deity and she did the same thing in return. She thought she had produced not just a great violinist, but a great humanitarian."

To acknowledge what was recorded is also to consider what was not. Gould had suggested to Menuhin Mozart’s Piano Sonata K570 – in the apocryphal version for violin – as well as sonatas by Brahms and Beethoven and those by Prokofiev and Strauss if his original plan of the Schoenberg Phantasy should prove inimical to the violinist. In the event he needn’t have worried because Menuhin accepted (though with clear misgivings about the work). Sometimes Menuhin hit prime form with unlikely keyboard partners – one thinks of his New York association with Wanda Landowska for example – and Gould was equally not an obvious associate, even though he had worked equably with Menuhin’s colleague Oscar Shumsky.
