Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Stephane Grappelli And "ALL THE WORLD’S VIOLINS" Royal Circus, Brussels – October 21, 1993 The International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation organised its second Gala concert at the Royal Circus on 21sst October 1993. The Foundation’s main aim is to develop international links between musicians, particularly among the young. The theme of this concert took therefore the form of a journey through cultures, the common strand being the violin in its different guises. This journey from classical music to traditional music showed that these two styles are far from being mutually exclusive, on the contrary they truly enriched one another. It also demonstrated the fact that, through such a universal language as music, all men are brothers. It therefore became an invitation to travel implying at the same time openness and encounter. Not only an encounter between different genres and people, between the master and the pupil, but also between musicians and the public as thanks to the central and circular scene of the Royal Circus, the music was in the midst of the public and in so being distance and boundaries vanished. Sir Yehudi Menuhin opened the evening with a work by Bach and then welcomed Stephane Grappelli on stage. Hosts of the evening, they played together for a while and then introduced the younger to the violin. Two young Asian girls from the Yehudi Menuhin School performed Bartok duos. They were followed by Dr. L. Subramaniam, the "Indian Paganini" and poet as many have called him, who performed pieces from the classical Indian repertoire. He was joined by Volker Biesenbender; a former student of Sir Yehudi Menuhin, for a dialogue between two violins. The first half finished on the image of the journey, brought to life by the Gypsy Titi Winterstein Quintett.

Alongside his renown as a great musician, Yehudi Menuhin was equally well known for his committed humanitarianism. In recognition of his work, he received many honours throughout his long career, including the Nehru Peace Prize for International Understanding in 1960, and in 1992 he was awarded the title of Ambassador of Goodwill to UNESCO. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 1993, he was awarded a life peerage. In 1963, Yehudi Menuhin created a boarding school in England for promising young musicians. In 1977, he founded the International Menuhin Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland, the location of the Menuhin Music Festival of which he was artistic director for 40 years. Yehudi Menuhin was President and Associate Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of the English String Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Sinfonia Varsovia and Honorary President of the Philharmonia Hungarica. The talk will be highlighted by music and videos. Burton knew Menuhin well; they worked together on radio and television projects for forty years. Drawing on contemporary sources, unpublished family correspondence and interviews with Menuhin, Burton has bypassed the familiar image of the saint-like, philosophising violinist guru to create a compelling, multi-faceted portrait of an indisputably great musician who was also a complex human being. Born in New York of Russian Jewish immigrants, Menuhin demanded to play the violin when only four and proved prodigiously gifted. He gave his first solo recital aged eight and within five years had acquired international fame. I cannot recommend this recording to a biginner whose ears are not used to old mono recording because the sound quality is no where near stereo/4D recordings. But I strongly recommend this album to music lovers all over the world who either enjoys listening to authentic or modern instrument. I must say that Menuhin's newer recording is a whole lot different set of music making. Personally I prefer older EMI Reference version which contains his (barely 20) naive approach to music and freshness which is lacking in the newer version.

Menuhin was honored March 14 for his distinguished contributions to international understanding at International House's 65th anniversary celebration and awards ceremony. Looking out into an audience of mostly students at a brief lecture before the award ceremony, Menuhin recalled his days as a youngster studying music in England. "I grew up, as you are growing up, with an understanding and curiosity of a variety of people and cultures," he said, while a steady rain played its own concerto outside the Home Room at International House. "The most important thing I've learned in my visits to the great schools of the worldBerkeley, Cambridge, Sorbonne, Harvard is that students are being taught to work together and appreciate one another. Yaltah Menuhin, younger sibling of the late violinist Yehudi Menuhin and respected pianist in her own right, has died. She was 79. She died Saturday in her London home. Although her brother, who died in 1999, achieved the greatest international fame, Yaltah and her older sister, Hephzibah, who died in 1981, received extensive musical training as they grew up in San Francisco. Yaltah Menuhin studied piano with Marcel Ciampi in Paris, Armando Silvestri in Rome and Carl Friedberg at the Julliard School in New York. She recorded classical piano pieces and gave solo performances with orchestras from Califonia to Paris and Geneva. She also became known for her work in chamber groups, notably with violinist Eudice Shapiro and cellist Victor Gottlieb. Occasionally, Menuhin performed with her famous brother and with her sister. In 1966, at Yehudi Menuhin's 50th birthday concert in London's Royal Festival Hall, he conducted Mozart's Concerto for three piano's and orchestra with Yaltah, Hephzibah and his son Jeremy as the pianists.

While Hephzibah was one of Yehudi's most constant musical partners, Yaltah took a separate path: she sometimes performed at the Bath festival, which Yehudi directed during the 1960s, and recorded one Mozart slow movement with him, but she also made an independent career in the United States. Named after the Crimean resort, Yaltah was born in San Francisco to the Russian-Jewish parents, Moshe and Marutha, whose musical gift to the world is vividly evoked in 'Menuhin', Humphrey Burton's biography of Yehudi, published last year. Touring internationally in the wake of Yehudi and his parents, the two sisters were, like him, kept away from schools, but they all learnt European languages from tutors and acquired a sophisticated culture, as well as their musical education. At the age of 15, Yaltah was composing proficient French alexandrines about her dreams and crushes. Rudolf Serkin, who taught both sisters the piano as small girls, thought Yaltah the more talented.

Menuhin was to have conducted the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra in Berlin on Tuesday night, but the concert was canceled when he took ill, concert promoter Jutta Adler said. His London office said he had pneumonia and died of heart failure in Berlin's Martin Luther Hospital. "He was a giant in this century, as a violinist, musician, personality within the musical world ... and of course the most phenomenal child prodigy that ever existed, certainly in this century," said violinist Itzhak Perlman. "Listening to his recordings, it is indescribable what he was able to communicate through his fiddle," Perlman added. Menuhin, who lived in London and in Gstaad, Switzerland, was born in New York of Russian Jewish parents who had emigrated from what was then Palestine. He was both an American citizen and a British subject, and was made a baron Lord Menuhin of Stoke d'Abernon in 1993. Menuhin was only 13 when Albert Einstein followed him backstage after a concert in Berlin and embraced him, exclaiming, "Now I know there is a God in heaven!"

That historic appearance with the New York Symphony, under Fritz Busch, launched an already promising career that continued to make history for six decades. Reviewing Menuhin's Carnegie Hall debut, the New York Times stated: "It seems ridiculous to say that he showed a mature conception of Beethoven's Concerto, but that is the fact. TONY PALMER, MENUHIN: A Family Portrait , faber and faber, London 1991 Yehudi's championship of German musicians (performers and orchestras) who had stayed in Nazi Germany and were, therefore, thought to have been collaborators and so could find no employment after 1945 is again witness to Yehudi's understanding of the human predicament. His relationship with the great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, despised after 1945 as being the 'Nazi conductor' , is a long and troublesome story to which we shall return later. Suffice to say here that the relationship raised the hackles of zealous Jews everywhere, and made a visit to the new state of Israel virtually impossible for some years . Even as late as 1957, when Yehudi insisted on playing the Bloch Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic as a tribute to that 'Old Testament prophet' of his childhood, who was by now neglected and dying, the taunt of anti-Semitism still hung in the air as a result of Yehudi's supposed 'collaboration' with ex-Nazis. So, while it would be quite wrong to accuse Yehudi here of naivety in the ways of the world, his simple honesty is often interpreted in that way. 'The problem is,' his second wife told me, 'that Yehudi hasn't got a wall to back against. He was not taught to believe in evil, so he doesn't. Which is nice for him, but not so easy for the rest who have to keep the evil away from him.
