April 2001 World Saxophone Quartet - "25th Anniversary - The New Chapter" RealAudio Sample The New York Times called the World Saxophone Quartet "The most original and important group to emerge since John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman redefined the art of group improvisation in the late 50's. Originally the group consisted of David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Hamiet Bluiett and Oliver Lake, all competent and established musicians in their own right. The WSQ began performing as a group in 1976. Since then they were voted best jazz group in Playboy's Reader's Poll, and have been consistent in the top group listings in the Downbeat's Annual Critics Poll. The WSQ is a free Jazz Ensemble that has managed to attract and maintain a large and diverse following and has toured extensively throughout the United States, Japan and Europe captivating audiences with their artistry, breadth of repertoire and diversity of compositional material. This new release "The New Chapter", the sixth recording on the Justin Time label, marks 25 years, and a creation of more than 20 recordings. This is, indeed a fine recording by the masters of free spirit and the avante-garde. Their best offering for quite some time, and is highly deserving of a place in everyone's collection. There are seven tunes on this CD, most are original compositions by members of the group. The exception being, the traditional "Goin' Home", a tune attributed to the classical composer Dvorak. David Murray included the composition mainly because of it's importance to black people, as their hymn of choice. Murray's haunting tenor solo of sombre lines, and solemn tones, truly indicates the compositions significance.

The back-to-back programs were a reminder of the vast range of styles contained in ballet. Even within this program, there were intense contrasts of intention, mood and style. On the extreme end of the experimental spectrum was the world premiere of Dominique Dumais' violently inventive "Scripted in the Body." At the other end, Kent Stowell's "Quaternary" emphasized flowing romantic partnerships. Nacho Duato's "Jardi Tancat" used barefoot dancers and jagged movement to express a timeless narrative of peasant life. Peter Martins' musically driven "Fearful Symmetries" set loose groups of dancers pursued by John Adams' dramatically symphonic score.

Local 30-73 member Nathan Brown got the idea to create a solo guitar CD when he was on the road with the touring production of the Broadway show "Swing". "I wanted to have something that I could hand to someone and say this is me, this is what I can do on guitar right now, and this is how I want to grow as a musician in the future." Nathan's CD, entitled No Way of Knowing , is an excellent collection of great standards such as I Got Rhythm, Polka Dots and Moonbeams, and They Can't Take That Away From Me . He also includes one very nice original tune and an interesting cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' song Under the Bridge . (I wouldn't have thought about that tune as a vehicle for solo jazz guitar, but I'm glad that Nathan did. It's one of my favorite cuts on the CD.) Nathan was involved in more than just the playing as he also contributed to the label design, photos, and song programming. He also took care of business by signing an AFM Bandstand Agreement for the CD. I know that he is justifiably proud of this project and hopes that he gets a chance to "hand one (a CD) to you" in the very near future ­ in exchange, of course, for some of your discretionary spending money. It's a pity that Mogul Thrash only recorded the one album, because they had the potential to rival bands such as IF, Keef Hartley and other brass rock outfits. The album is available on CD and is a worthwhile addition to the collection. Nite Flyte Nite Flyte - You, from "Nite Flyte", their first and only album, released in 1981. This little-known US West Coast outfit was put together by ex-Tornader guitarist Sandy Torano and session vocalist/sax player Howard Johnson, and the album featured AWB drummer Steve Ferrone and others. If you enjoy Steely Dan, Pablo Cruise and other similar acts, you'll enjoy Nite Flyte.

C: You came from Winnipeg and it shows: you look corn fed and you have wheat for hair. W: I've never been so insulted. C: As I said, you came from Winnipeg. Your predecessor was an ex-Sudbury misfit. I come from Calgary and direct a gallery focused on work from Vancouver. And yet you told the Art Newspaper that Toronto was 'myopic'. W: My god. I think context is just as important as what was said. What I was referring to in a round about way was my impression of The Power Plant perhaps seeming myopic in that it doesn't tour exhibitions. It doesn't produce so many catalogues. It doesn't co-produce or collaborate on many exhibitions or projects. So it would appear to be that there is some myopia at play. On the other hand, it could also be seen as suggesting a certain strength of the institution to only be concerned with building its place in Toronto. That's a fantastic thing to do as well so, it has to be put in context, myopic.

MUSELETTER Spring 1998 Faculty Highlights Beth Bolton presented lectures and research presentations in New Jersey, New York, Iowa, and Michigan where she presented a video tape recording of her research in early childhood music at the Early Childhood Music Conference at Michigan State University. Dr. Bolton will continue a busy travel and research schedule with invited presentations at state music education conferences in Illinois, Texas, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She will also present at the Music Teachers National Conference, MENC, and the Early Childhood Music Association. The summer and early fall will take her to Poland and the Dominican Republic to lecture and conduct research in early childhood music. David Cannata delivered a paper entitled "The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming" at the International 19th-Century Conference held at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He gave three performances of The Wheatstone English Concertina; at the Dean's Invitation Recital for the College of Arts and Science of New York University; the Donor's Evening Recital at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the President's Invitation Recital at the President's residence of the City University of New York. Dr. Cannata is a consultant for the Historic Places Preservation Center, and an external dissertation Advisor for the City University of New York.
