fabulous one, if this week is anyindication! Suite from Appalachian Spring byAaron Copland opened the program. This
classic masterpiece by one of America'sforemost composers is a marvelous
work under any circumstances, andthe Dallas Symphony was in top form this
weekend. Laurie Shulman describesthe work this way, and I agree wholeheartedly: Appalachian Spring's sentimental appeal derives from the strong sense of Americana withwhich Copland suffused his score. Even though the only borrowed melodyis the Shaker tune "'Tis a Gift to be Simple," his original music communicatesthe sense that we have always known it. The Suite from Appalachian Springis a longer work than most opening pieces (these days, anyway), and the BarberConcerto performed by Anne Akiko Meyers

Violinist Meyers is no stuffy soloist
    By Ken Glickman
For the Lansing State Journal Examining the press packet for concert violinist Anne Akiko Meyers is like thumbing through the pages of Vogue. Her face is on the cover of World Traveler magazine. Inside, she holds her 1718 Stradivarius while lounging in a black strapless gown with a pearl necklace. Meyers is even featured in ads for Anne Klein and Bazaar magazine. Though she resembles a supermodel, Meyers is an international soloist, performing with all the world's great orchestras and making best-selling classical CDs as well. The Lansing Symphony last brought Meyers, 32, as a soloist when she was a talented student at Juilliard - about 12 years ago. Now she's developed into one of the most sought-after artists on the concert scene. "I haven't had a formal violin lesson since I was 20," Meyers said, speaking by telephone from her home in New York. But that doesn't mean she isn't still a student in some ways.
