American cellist Daniel Gaisford, regarded as one of today's most gifted and communicative musicians, has won acclaim from critics and audiences alike for his consummate musicianship, charismatic presence on stage and dazzling technical command. Gaisford enrolled in the University of Southern California's Young Artists' Program, studying with Gabor Rejto. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he worked with both Channing Robbins and Harvey Shapiro. While at Juilliard, he was one of the principal cellists of the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Gaisford is the recipient of several distinguished honors, among them First Place awards of the National Young Artists Competition in Los Angeles and first prize winner of the Juilliard School's 1986 Shostakovich Cello Competition, which resulted in his New York concerto debut at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, as soloist with the Juilliard Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jorge Mester in Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2.

In Focus
The Fourth Stage : In Focus Roddy Ellias Biography
"Exquisite ... a most thoughtful soloist ... the kind of subtlety you don't often hear ... anywhere." Mark Miller, The Globe and Mail, June 1999 Quebec-born, Ottawa -based Roddy Ellias is a unique composer/guitarist whose work in both classical and jazz music has received national and international acclaim. An in-demand artist and a true innovator, one can find Ellias joining composers Keith Jarrett and Marjan Mosetich on the title release of "Whale Spirit Rising", issued worldwide last November on the Chandos label (a 26-minute original composition for I Musici and saxophonist David Mott). His recent activities include writing a violin sonata commissioned by the American virtuoso violinist Anne Akiko Meyers; writing commissioned songs for Canadian mezzo soprano Anne-Marie Donovan and saxophone quartet Saxart; and soloing on his acoustic guitar on "Oasis", a brand new CD of thirteen original compositions. He also performs chamber music concerts, frequently plays with the NAC Orchestra, and performs and records with Canadian jazz icons Guido Basso and Dave Turner. Ellias has also performed with some of the most luminous names in the contemporary jazz world, including Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Tom Harrel, and Ray Anderson. Ellias' reputation both as a composer and a performer of both classical and jazz music have made him an invaluable member of Concordia University's department of Music, where, as Associate Professor, he teaches composition, guitar, and improvisation.

Youth, passion, vitality... symphony?
By Jeff Rapsis
HippoPress.com Okay, quick-when you hear "symphony orchestra," the first words that come to mind are…? Did your answer fall somewhere between "pretentious foreigners" and "Thurston Howell III." For many young people, the symphony and its patrons are simply a world apart, a closed society that belongs to others, most of whom are old fogies. Right or wrong, it's an age-old image problem. Way back in 1939, the Marx Brothers got big laughs in their film "At the Circus" by setting an entire orchestra and its pompous conductor adrift at sea on a barge. Truth is, the audience for classical music in the United States has always skewed older. It's only when people have the income, time and cultural interests to support a concert-going habit that they attend regularly. Since the 1960s, the median age of concertgoers across the nation has held steady at about the mid-50s, according to the American Symphony Orchestra League. But in Manchester, the paradox is that young people play a surprisingly big role in the classical concert scene. Many musicians who make up the New Hampshire Symphony are recent graduates from the best schools in Boston and elsewhere. Soloists who perform with the orchestra are often young artists on their way to becoming the hottest concert stars of tomorrow.

"Cellist sets SLO Symphony on Fire"
The heat was turned up Saturday evening in the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly. We are not talking about the thermostat. The musical mood went from crackling logs warming the family hearth to a three-alarm blaze setting the room on fire. The "blaze" was guest cellist Zuill Bailey, who ignited both the symphony and the symphony hall.
With his long, dark hair, and eyes that sometimes search the horizon like a ship captain's, Bailey creates a stirring presence on stage.
He has been described in other publications as "an athlete with the cello," which captures deftly the way he and the instrument interact.
The second half of the program was devoted to Bailey's performance of Dmitri Shostakovich's Concerto No. 1, in E-flat, Opus 107.
That concerto is based on short, memorable "motives" that appear throughout the work in various incarnations: some subtle, others more obvious.
The first movement sounds a bit prickly, as if we are chasing shadows in dark alleys. The French horn is featured prominently along with the solo cello.

James Taylor Severinsen, Taylor part of symphony season
Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Lou Rawls and James Taylor headline symphony's pops season. With the Grand Rapids Symphony's selection of a new conductor comes a 1999-2000 season that spotlights the works of American composers and one that brings a diverse selection of guest artists, from classical violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, to the popular Irish family band The Cassidy's, to soft rock recording artist James Taylor. "We've titled our 1999-2000 season 'Making Music. Making History,'" said symphony president William Ryberg, adding that several changes have been made to enhance the upcoming music schedule that celebrate the Millennium. The changes include highlighting the works of American composers, such as Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland, during each Classical Series concert, and spotlighting the music of selected international composers, such as Beethoven and Mozart, during the Casual Classics concerts, four of which take place in Holland. Concert tickets are on sale at the symphony box office, 616-454-9451, ext. 1, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday or by stopping by the symphony office at 169 Louis Campau Promenade, Suite One, Grand Rapids. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 616-456-3333.
