The Concertos Nos. 25 and 26 (composed in 1792/97) are very lyrical works characterised by wonderful melodic invention. The Concerto No.10, composed in Paris in 1783/86, is a more exuberant and virtuoso composition, rich in brilliant and imaginative instrumental passages. Fine, as usual, is the interpretation of Franco Mezzena, by now one of the greatest specialists of Viotti's violin output. - CDS 364 DDD
Quartetto dorico Quartetto in re minore Andrea Vio, violin - Alberto Battiston, violin - Luca Morassutti, viola - Angelo Zanin, cello - Ottorino Respighi is mostly renowned for his wonderful orchestral compositions, which are part of the permanent repertoire of all great conductors. However, he also wrote chamber music, some of which is very fascinating. Respighi composed his Quartetto dorico in 1924, inspired by ancient Gregorian modes, of which he was a keen scholar; the result was this brilliant and atypical work, in one ample movement. The CD also features his Quartetto in Re minore, composed by Respighi in 1909. After their successful recording of the Quartets by Gian Francesco Malipiero, the Quartetto di Venezia thus continue their work of rediscovery of Italian 20th-century music. -

THE VIOLIN CONCERTOS played on Paganini's violin (Vol. 1) - Concerto No. 1 in E flat Major - Concerto No. 2 in B minor "La Campanella". Orchestra del Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova - Massimo Quarta, soloist and conductor - (Massimo Quarta plays Paganini’s 1742 Guarneri "del Gesù") - For the first time these works have been recorded using Paganini's own violin The First Concerto , in particular, has been recorded for the first time in the original tonality of E flat Major , with the violin uptuned by half a tone, in accordance with Paganini's autograph. With this project, which offers the listener the six concertos exactly as the Genoese composer conceived and wrote them , Dynamic wants to pay a homage to one of the most significant figures in the history of 19th-century Italian violin music, providing music lovers with a series of recordings that are not only valuable for their high artistic quality but also for their documentary importance. - Our soloist, Massimo Quarta , was a pupil of Salvatore Accardo and the winner, in 1991, of the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition, when he first revealed just how close to the composer's spirit his interpretation of Paganini is.

Twentieth-Century Treasures
You'll find plenty of soul and substance
in these ten hidden gems
by Andrew Palmer

In general, stick to the major record labels if you want interpretations by great artists of the core repertoire; investigate the smaller labels if you’re interested in lesser-known works. There’s no clearer demonstration of this than the clutch of 20th-century music CDs that recently came my way for review. Listening to them confirmed a number of things in my mind: first, that there’s an extraordinary wealth of music out there to explore; second, that CDs give today’s composers and instrumentalists unprecedented opportunities for self-promotion; and last, that the term "20th-century music" incorporates such a variety of styles as to be virtually meaningless. Simplest musical forces first: solo recital discs. In the refreshingly direct booklet note for his CD

December 1997 Morton Gould: American Ballads Foster Gallery ALEXANDRE TANSMAN (1897-1986): Sinfonietta No. 1, Divertimento, Sinfonia piccola, Sinfonietta No. 2. Although born in Poland, Tansman lived a cosmopolitan life and his music was most influenced by Ravel, Les Six and Stravinsky and there are similarities to Martinu in some of the works recorded here. The two sinfoniettas practically bracket his entire career, dating from 1924 and 1979 respectively and like the other two pieces (from 1944 and 1952), demonstrate his personal characteristics of rich melodic invention, a warmth and sentiment in his lyrical slow movements (even fast movements often have slow, lyrical sections) and a high degree of rhythmic dynamism. Virtuosi di Praga; Israel Yinon. Koch Schwann 3-6593-2 (Germany) FRANZ SCHREKER (1878-1934): Suite from Der Geburtstag der Infantin, Melodrama Das Weib des Intaphernes. Two recordings of Das Weib des Intaphernes in two months... what are the odds? For those of you who didn't pick up last month's Schreker release, coupled with the youthful symphony, we have the Persian fable-based-melodrama with a female narrator instead of a male. Der Geburtstag was written as an outdoor ballet in 1908 and later turned into an opera. In 1923, Schreker produced a suite containing three-quartets of the music of the ballet but in a vastly supplemented orchestration, giving us the colossal concert suite with (at the time) unprecedentedly opulent orchestral scoring which is recorded here. Lena Stolze (narrator), Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin; Gerd Albrecht. Koch Schwann 3-6591-2 (Germany)

Nystroem is both better-known than his coeval Fernström and a little more distant in musical personality. The Sinfonia espressiva (1935-37) is a spare work, more "Scandinavian" in its quality of contemplation and inwardness; its two slow movements carry the majority of expressive weight while the scherzo and fugal finale exhibit a sharply chiselled tautness. From 1963, the Sinfonia seria is in two movements, each of which describes a journey from calm through force and tension back to calm again in an atmosphere of meditative austerity. Malmö Symphony Orchestra; Paavo Järvi. BIS 782 (Sweden). KURT ATTERBERG (1887-1974): Cello Concerto, Op. 21, Cello Sonata, Op. 27. The concerto, written between 1917 and 1922, is a rhapsodic work lasting over half an hour. While some sections sound like middle-period Sibelius, the specifically Nordic moments of the work are relatively few as Atterberg's eclecticism provides a veritable grab-bag of styles current in northern European musical thought at the beginning of this century. The singing, lyrical-rhapsodic quality of the concerto is replicated in the sonata of 1925. Werner Thomas-Mifune (cello), RSO Berlin; Karl Anton Rickenbacker. KOCH Schwann 315852 (Germany) FRANCIS POTT (b.1957): Cello Sonata, Hunt's Bay, Farewell to Hirta. The major work here is the cello sonata, an extended elegiac composition in memory of the composer's parents, tonal and in extended traditional form, emotionally charged, making full and fine use of the cello's expressive capabilities. This may be one of the finest cello sonatas to come out of the British Isles this century. The two solo piano works are in the best tradition of modern romanticism - they are both highly evocative sea pieces, owing something perhaps, to late Frank Bridge. David Watkin (cello), Howard Moody (piano), Francis Pott (piano). Guild GMCD 7141 (England)
