Midori Midori fell in love with the violin at the early age of 3 and immediately began taking lessons. She studied and practiced daily with her mother, an accomplished violinist, and at the young age of six she made her concert debut in her native Osaka, Japan. It was a mere three years later that she performed before the renowned Julliard teacher Dorothy DeLay and was invited to study at the Julliard School in New York. Midori and Setsu left for New York in 1982 and that same year Midori was the surprise performer at the New York Philharmonic's New Year's Eve concert. The Stradivari Society loaned the ex-David, Guarneri del Gesu violin to Midori when she was 10 years old, making her the first violinist loaned a prestigious instrument from the society. Upon graduating to the full-size violin, Midori placed her ¾ size violin into The Stradivari Society collection for loan to another young talent, making her the first artist to support them in the use of one of her own instruments. The New York Times recognized the 14-year-old Midori on the front page after her inspirational interpretation of Leonard Bernstein's Serenade during a New York Philharmonic Central Park concert, despite her breaking strings on several violins during the performance. Talented Violinist Midori Marks the 20th Anniversary of Her Professional Debut Violinist Midori and Pianist Robert McDonald have become one of the most acclaimed recital partnerships, winning consistent praise for their performances at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Tokyo's Suntory Hall, Vienna's Musikverein or Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. The duo will meet local audience in a violin recital at 8pm June 9 (Sunday) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. The recital will feature Liszt's "Valse-caprice No. 6, S. 427"(arranged by David Oistrakh and transcribed from Schubert's "Soirees de Vienne"), Beethoven's "Sonata No. 10 in G, Op. 96", Szymanowski's "Neigh Horse" (transcribed by Pawel Kochanski from "12 Kurpian Songs, Op. 58, No. 9") and Richard Strauss' "Sonata in E-flat, Op. 18". Hailed as one of the world's foremost violinists, Midori was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1971 and began studying the violin with her mother, Setsu Goto, at a very early age. In 1982, when Zubin Mehta first heard her play, he was so impressed that he invited her to be a surprise guest soloist for the New York Philharmonic's traditional New Year's Eve concert, on which occasion she received a standing ovation and the impetus to begin a major career. Her violin is the 1734 Guarnerius del Gesu "ex-Huberman", which is on a lifetime loan to her from the Hayashibara Foundation. The year 2002 marks the 20th anniversary of Midori's professional debut, which took place on New Year's Eve 1982, with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic. Commemorative events have been planned throughout the world: the celebrations begin in Japan in May 2002 as Midori plays a major recital tour with pianist Robert McDonald. She also plans to perform in many smaller venues throughout Japan, experimenting with unique variations on the concert experience, including thematic concepts and proactive audience participation. The 20th anniversary will continue in the 2002-03 season as Midori performs with many of the international orchestras and in the key concert halls around the world.

Former prodigy violinist to perform on campus By Alexander L. Bingcang Contributing writer It is July 1986 at the Tanglewood Music Festival. A petite violinist from Osaka, Japan, by the name of Midori has just knocked the socks off the audience, conductor, orchestra and the whole classical music world with her amazing performance of Bernstein's "Serenade." Why all the fuss? Forced to use the concertmaster's violin because of her own violin's broken E string, Midori continued to perform the music.Once again, because of unusual circumstances, the E string snapped on the replacement violin. The 14-year-old followed protocol, taking the associate concertmaster's violin and continuing the piece. With confidence she managed to finish the piece note-perfect on two other violins, both of which were one size too large for her 5-foot frame. Midori became a legend over night, and the next day, the New York Times' front-page headline read "Girl, 14, Conquers Tanglewood With 3 Violins." Midori's engagements have included performances with the Chicago Symphony, the New York Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic, to name a few.

A person doesn't become a world-famous violinist by the time she's a teen-ager without a little backbone to sustain her. Today, at 30, Midori - who performs with the Charlotte Symphony at its 70th anniversary performance on March 20 - has ditched the childish clothes. She speaks her mind, though for interviews she prefers to do so in e-mail exchanges. That's for the sake of clarity and accuracy, she said in a follow-up conversation after sending detailed, thoughtful answers to a reporter's questions. After the upheaval of Sept. 11, travel became slower and more stressful, Midori said. Still, she is sticking to her schedule of appearances, which this season includes a tour of her native Japan with the Pittsburgh Symphony and appearances with the Munich Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. "It never crossed my mind to stop traveling because of safety issues. I would have considered a request by my family had they asked, but they did not; I know that they would not have," the violinist said by e-mail.

The concert will begin at 8:30 at the Civic Auditorium. Since Midori's last visit to Knoxville 15 years ago, she has worked with some of the most prestigious symphonies in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition, she has worked with several music icons including Yo-Yo Ma, Leonard Bernstein, Peter Wiley and Pinchas Zukerman. The KSO is very excited to have the young woman back in its presence. "The biggest impression we ever had with a guest artist in this community was when Midori first played here. Ever since, we've been trying to get her back," Maestro Kirk Trevor, said. "She is one of the most sought-after artists of our time, and we are thrilled to have her return to Knoxville," he said.
