"Violinist Stefan Milenkovich's recital at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater Monday evening was so disarmingly magical that it is not easy to describe its glories. At 22, Milenkovich is clearly at the threshold of a major career. This is not so much a matter of dazzling virtuosity (though he has it all) as of searching musicianship." Washington Post "Milenkovich is most impressive. In the Franck, his big, singing tone in the first movement was followed by the restless, turbulent Allegro, with the young violinist reaching heroic heights. The Ysaÿe solo sonatas are perfectly made for a violinist of Milenkovich's insights. This performance was about a young man with the technique to be a great fiddler and the imagination to be a great musician." Indianapolis Star "Stefan Milenkovich has remarkable control over his instrument and is blessed with superb intonation and a limitless capacity for sustaining a big, broad, smooth line." Los Angeles Times "Milenkovich clearly has a striking natural talent for the violin, which has been developed with meticulous care and thoroughness, giving him a rock solid foundation and a brilliant virtuoso technique. His tone has both quality and power, and his command of fingers and bow is complete, relaxed, and effortless: he makes the most hair-rising pyrotechnics seem easy. The running passages of the Prokofiev were flawlessly clear, even and distinct. Milenkovich played Paganini stunningly, easily tossing off all the incredible acrobatics-leaps, jumps, runs at top speed to the end of the fingerboard, even the treacherous double harmonics."

MIT hosts young Serbian violinist's Boston premiere
By Guan-Jong (John) Chen
Class of 2004 Stefan Milenkovich, the 24-year-old virtuoso from Serbia, will perform at MIT. At 24, Stefan Milenkovich has already won top prizes in numerous prestigious violin competitions in the United States and abroad. He gave his one-thousandth concert and performed for Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II all before he turned 18. "If extraordinary technique is the measure of a true virtuoso, then without doubt violinist Stefan Milenkovich has achieved virtuoso status," wrote one critic. On Sunday, April 29, the distinguished Serbian violinist will perform at 8pm in Kresge Auditorium in an event organized by the MIT Organization of Serbian Students (MOST). Milica Radisic, a graduate student in chemical engineering and president of MOST, called Mr. Milenko-vich "the most famous Serbian violinist and one of the finest young artists worldwide. "We thought it would be a great honor for MIT to host his Boston-area premiere and for our club to organize such an event," said Ms. Radisic.

Mr. Bunch’s second commission, Paraphraseology, was premiered by marimbist MakotoNakura and violinist stefan milenkovich at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital

KENJI BUNCH, composer
"Kenji Bunch has had several arresting works performed in recent seasons. He is a composer to watch, and his new position as Young Concert Artists' Composer-in-Residence is likely to expand his presence. Mr. Bunch is also a violist, and his five movement Suite for Viola and Piano, composed for violist Naoko Shimizu, tests a player's limits. The dramatic writing of the opening Rhapsody gives way to a pizzicato section full of character and melody. A graceful Lament that explores a broad timbral palette becomes an extended Cadenza, which in turn expands into a vigorous, virtuosic perpetual-motion finale."
- THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Kenji Bunch was introduced to Washington music lovers on Monday evening at the Kennedy Center. His Suite for Viola and Piano was given a dazzling world premiere by violist Naoko Shimizu and pianist Ozgur Aydin. On the evidence of this concert, presented by Young Concert Artists to open its 20th-anniversary season of Terrace Theater concerts,Bunch is on the brink of a distinguished career. He has been appointed YCA's composer-in-residence and has already garnered many commissions elsewhere. The style of the suite's five short, well-contrasted movements is clearly modern but deeply respectful of tradition and instantly enjoyable. Kenji Bunch has a Juilliard master's degree in the instrument and composes with firsthand knowledge of the viola's personality its unique sound, its communicative potentials, its grace, agility and dynamic subtleties."

Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach
Label: Dynamic "[Milenkovich] plays very cleanly, with immaculate intonation and a refreshingly unfussy (and unerring) way of delineating Bach's counterpoint. He is full of youthful vigor... I am very impressed by his ability to communicate formal proportions and balance the melodic lines in these supremely demanding works. His playing is touchingly earnest... On the whole, this is one of the finest sets of these works that I have heard..." American Record Guide "...19-year-old violinist Stefan Milenkovich tackles Bach's Sonatas and Partitas with an intensity of concentration and artistic maturity beyond his years. Technically, he is in splendid form, playing with accuracy and precision and drawing some ravishing sounds from his instrument. Milenkovich's warm, romantic performances are carefully considered and sensitively phrased and his expressive style is never exaggerated... The fugues of the three sonatas and the famous Chaconne of the Second Partita are admirably done; their multiple stopping is dispatched with remarkable clarity and control and their voice leading is conveyed with consummate skill and perceptive musicality..." Violinist Stefan Milenkovich's recital at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater Monday evening was so disarmingly magical that it is not easy to describe its glories. At 22, Milenkovich is clearly at the threshold of a major career. This is not so much a matter of dazzling virtuosity (though he has it all) as of searching musicianship. Each piece on the program sounded utterly different, a creation of its own time and place. The Grieg Sonata No. 3 is slight music that has grown unfashionable, but Milenkovich's tonal variety was remarkable throughout, so much that it seemed the embodiment of Nordic fiddling a century ago. Milenkovich enriched his tone considerably for two Tchaikovsky miniatures (Waltz-Scherzo and "Serenade Melancolique"), giving them an effortless, soaring lyricism of surprising simplicity and grace. And when he turned up the voltage he summoned reserves of power that nonetheless came naturally without tonal hardening or rhetorical flourish. Milenkovich's Paganini ("I Palpiti," Op. 13) was mind-numbingeach note in presto passages seemed to have a minute cushion of air behind it, double-stops had dead-center intonation, and the long, arching melodic lines were rainbowed with primary colorations.

Violinist introduces classical music to Wamego students
Last Modified:

By Bill Blankenship

The Capital-Journal

Violinist Stefan Milenkovich joked with Wamego schoolchildren during a residency with the kids Wednesday morning at the Columbian Theatre in Wamego.
PHILIP CARLSON/The Capital-Journal WAMEGO As a way to explain Earth and its inhabitants to civilizations elsewhere in the universe, NASA placed on its Voyager I and II spacecrafts a gold-plated phonograph record that included Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. Violinist Stefan Milenkovich used the same tactic Wednesday to reach another population, many of whom might consider classical music alien. Milenkovich played Bach for a group of Wamego High School students assembled in the Columbian Theatre.
After he and pianist Rohan De Silva played a movement from Bach's Sonata for Violin and Piano in E Major, Milenkovich immediately told the students they didn't have to understand all of the nuances of classical music to appreciate it. "If you like it, that's good enough," said Milenkovich, who spent Wednesday in Wamego discussing classical music and playing it for schoolchildren. He will do the same today in Manhattan, where on Friday night he will give a recital at Kansas State University's All Faiths Chapel.

Violinist Milenkovich to perform
When Stefan Milenkovich was 10 years old, he played his violin for President Ronald Reagan at a Christmas concert. By the time he was 14, he had added Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II to his list of famous spectators. Now, 11 years after his performance at the Vatican, Milenkovich will play his second consecutive McCain Performance Series recital at 8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, in All Faiths Chapel. This is his only performance in Kansas. Born in the former Yugoslavia, Milenkovich began playing the violin at the age of 3. He won his first international competition at 7 and gave his 1,000th concert at age 16. When he was 18, he became the youngest student to graduate with a music degree from the University of Belgrade. Milenkovich will play pieces from Bach, Saint-Saens, Bloch, Novacek, Tchaikovsky, Sarasate and Paganini. In addition to the recital, Milenkovich is in residency with the Wamego and Manhattan public schools. The performance is sponsored by Capitol Federal Savings. Additional funding has been provided in part by the Kansas Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and the K-State Fine arts fee.
