In a truly remarkable performance, violinist Stefan Milenkovich played to a standing-room-only crowd in the Great Room at Bein & Fushi last December. He was then the recipient of the "Lyall" Stradivari c 1702. Milenkovich performed a program of wide-ranging repertoire including music by Bloch and Paganini, and dedicated Tchaikovsky's moving "Meditation and Melody" to the victims of the September 11 attacks. Attending the event were Society Co-Founders Geoffrey Fushi and Mary Galvin along with Suzanne Sims-Fushi and violinist and former recipient Eunice Lee. Geoffrey Fushi remarked: "We were all absolutely thrilled to hear this fine artist in recital. He is an exceptional musician with a bright future." The audience agreed—Milenkovich was called back for three encores: Hora Stacatto, Estrellita , and Debussy's Beau Soir , in arrangements by Heifetz. Patrick Sinozich accompanied on piano.

TIME OUT NEW YORK - APRIL 9, 1998 Yugo Guy! by Jeremy Caplan
Belgrade-born violinist Stefan Milenkovich, good pal of political bigwigs, makes his Young Concert Artists debut at the Y. Search the halls of Juilliard, and chances are you'll find only one student who can count the Pope, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev among his fans. Stefan Milenkovicha 21-year-old violinist from the former Yugoslaviaserenaded Reagan at the White House, is a personal friend of Gorbachev and will meet the Pope for the third time next month. Before lunching at the Vatican, however, Milenkovich has local business to attend. A winner of the 1997 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Belgrade-born virtuoso makes his New York debut at the 92nd Street Y on Tuesday 14. "Coming from a place like Belgrade, I find that people think of the worst things," Milenkovich says. "I want to prove that something nice can come from that part of the worldnot just war and crisis." Milenkovich began playing the violin when he was three years old; until this year, he studied in his hometown under his father's tutelage. By the time he was 18, he had played over a thousand concerts worldwide, won several international competitions, recorded two CDs and earned a music degree from the University of Belgrade. He's currently enrolled in Juilliard's exclusive Professional Studies program as a student of violin doyenne Dorothy DeLay, instructor to the starsincluding Itzhak Perlman, Gil Shaham and Sarah Chang.

Acclaimed violinist Stefan Milenkovich closes Las Vegas Philharmonic's season
By KEN WHITE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Violinist Stefan Milenkovich returns to Las Vegas as the featured soloist for the Las Vegas Philharmonic's season finale Saturday night in Artemus Ham Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Milenkovich is no stranger to the Philharmonic. He has performed at two of the orchestra's soirees. "He just knocked everybody out," said Harold Weller, music director of the Philharmonic. "Instant standing ovation." Weller first heard of Milenkovich through friends in Flagstaff, Ariz., where Weller had been conductor. "They said, `You have to hire this kid for something.' He impressed us so much at the first soiree that we invited him back last year." Milenkovich will perform Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's romantic Violin Concerto "It's a real tour de force," Weller said at Saturday's concert. Milenkovich gained recognition by winning the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1997. He also received the silver medal at the 1994 Indianapolis Violin Competition when he was 17.

Philharmonic leaning heavily on classics for upcoming concerts
By KEN WHITE
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Choosing a season's worth of music to perform isn't an easy task, says Las Vegas Philharmonic artistic director Harold Weller. "It's really a protracted and agonizing process to balance styles in a program and to find the best guest artist to appear," says Weller, who also conducts the orchestra in all but one of its programs this season. In February, the Philharmonic audience members were surveyed for their input. About 700 surveys were returned and "one suggestion was to play more from the classic period. So our March concert" with works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Robert Schumann and Ludwig van Beethoven "is a direct result of that." Rosen won the 1977 International Naumburg Competition and the following year was the first American cellist to win the gold medal at the Tchaikovsky International Competition. He began studying the cello at 6 and at 13 began studying with famed cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.

Now 24, Milenkovich has made his first Chico appearance in the Performing Arts Center at Chico State University Thursday. Milenkovich had an incredible presence and stamina on stage. The strong performances by Milenkovich and accompanying pianist Rohan De Silva made for a soothing and enjoyable show. The program was geared toward classical music lovers of all ages. Milenkovich captivated his audience of approximately 80 people for two hours with his obvious passion for classical music from the first to the last note he played. "I was in awe the whole time," said Weston Thompson, an art student at Chico State. Milenkovich played with amazing intensity, as if he was playing straight from his soul and conveying all of his emotions to the audience.

Yugoslavian violinist Stefan Milenkovich began his musical studies at age 3 under the watchful eye of his father. He performed for President Reagan at age 10, Mikhail Gorbachev at age 11 and the Pope at age 14. The 1997 winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions brings his astonishing talent to Lincoln for a performance at 8 p.m. March 12 in the Johnny Carson Theater as part of the Lied Center for Performing Arts' season. His concert is part of the Lied's Discovery! series which showcases the best in cutting edge new talent. Milenkovich (pronounced mee-LEN-ko-vitch) certainly exemplifies that definition. By age 16, he already had 1,000 concert performances under his belt, and he has toured world-wide as both solo peformer and featured soloist with orchestra.
