Michael F. Duff
Berg Bows, Inc. was honored and very happy to exhibit six of our finest cello bows, crafted especially for the occasion, at the Indiana University Musical Arts Center during Maestro Janos Starker's 75th Birthday Celebration. Unlike other exhibitors, traveling to the "MAC" was not a problem since our studio is only one and one half mile from campus. To begin with, we are very gratified to be able to say that Mr. Starker has endorsed the Berg cello bows, having critiqued many. He has praised the great improvement in their performance quality over the years. This is in part due to following his advice on aspects important to him as a virtuoso, and mathematical studies on the design of the stick.

Build a Legacy: The Endowment Education Symphony League Press Room Links Violinist's effortless virtuosity sparks symphony's Scandinavian salute Napa Valley Register Mon March 04, 2002 By L. PIERCE CARSON Eager to welcome spring to wine country, the Napa Valley Symphony Orchestra set its sights on the pastoral music of Scandinavia for its latest pair of concerts. Invited to liven things up was guest violinist Stefan Milenkovich, a tremendous 24-year-old fiddler born in Belgrade making his third appearance Sunday with the local orchestra. Listening to Milenkovich perform Sibelius' "Concerto in D Minor for Violin and Orchestra" made one aware of the fact that no musical structure or style becomes out-of-date if a composer can bring to it freshness, creativity and a decidedly personal point of view. While never completely breaking with tradition nor falling prey to modern devices, Sibelius gave us music unlike any other heard in concert halls. It is music of the North music influenced by northern geography, climate, temperament and legend. His only concerto a stunning piece that's perhaps the best introduction to Norse mysticism is a well-sculptured work filled with romantic ardor, rife with rhapsodic passages for the violin. The finale, according to the composer, is nothing short of a "danse macabre."

Award-winning violinist to perform at McCain Published on Friday, February 8, 2002 Cassidy Hill Kansas State Collegian
At an age when he could barely speak, Stefan Milenkovich began his musical career. Violin Man Stefan Milenkovich will perform at 8 tonight at McCain Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for students, $12 for general public, are are available at McCain box office. In 1980, 3-year-old Milenkovich had already attempted to play the piano, which was his mother's talent. After realizing the piano was not for him, Milenkovich then picked his father's best talent, the violin. Years have passed, and the multi award-winner Milenkovich will play at 8 tonight in McCain Auditorium. Pianist Rohan De Silva will accompany Milenkovich in a recital like performance.

Award-winning country trio excites crowd of all ages
There were more than three chicks at the Thursday night Bramlage Coliseum concert. A group of more than 20 members of Kappa Kappa Gamma lined the second row of the Dixie Chicks concert wearing black shirts adorned with sequins spelling "Kappa Chicks" across their chests. Kacy Gillogly, junior in advertising, was one of four sorority sisters who camped near Bramlage for the tickets. She said after the four found out they were not allowed to camp near the coliseum doors, they found a spot close to the parking lot to spend the night. Thirty days later, a crowd of all ages filled the coliseum to hear the Grammy award-winning trio. Vida, a Tex-Mex band from San Antonio, served as the opening act for the 7:30 p.m. concert. The artists were in Manhattan as part of their 38-state MusicCountry.com-sponsored tour.

By Edith Eisler Readers on string playing are surely well-aquainted with the prose of Edith Eisler, whose long-time commitment to music writing was feted at the Machold Rare Violins New York Studios on February 24th. Ms. Eisler was honored for the recent publication of two books which are sure to become seminal: 21st Century Violinists and 21st Century String Quartets , both from the String Letter Publishing. Strings Magazine, part of String Letter Publishing and for whom Ms. Eisler is Corresponding Editor, threw the party, which drew members of the Orion, Emerson and Tokyo Quartets, composers, publishers, editors, and well-wishers from every segment of musical life in New York. Mary VanClay, Editor of Strings Magazine, was delighted with how much fun everyone had. "We were thrilled by the number of players who joined the celebration, as well as the publicists, writers, and venue managers who help us daily in our coverage of string music. And we couldn't have done it without the wonderful staff of Machold Rare Violins on Broadway, who provided the beautiful location and helped make sure everything ran smoothly. To everyone wh wished Edith and all of us well on this new venture, our sincere thanks." 21st Century Violinists and 21st Century String Quartets

50. The Durango Herald  - Bernard Rubenstein Review

San Juan Symphony Concert "Exhilarating" by Gary B. Walker
Special to the Herald Tuesday, April 28, 1998
The San Juan Symphony Orchestra concluded its first season under the direction of Maestro Bernard Rubenstein with an exhilarating concert Sunday afternoon. This has been one of the best seasons in recent memory with Maestro Bernard Rubenstein programming a variety of music which the orchestra has played very well while also introducing new artists to the Durango community. The final concert was no exception. The cornerstone and highlight was the performance by 21-year-old violinist Stefan Milenkovich. Having made his New York debut less than two weeks ago, this dynamic young artist performed with the maturity and charisma of a seasoned artist. Milenkovich performed the "Concerto for Violin No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22" by the noted Polish composer Henryk (Henri) Wieniawski. The concerto is a minor masterpiece, full of romantic sweep and emphatic expression. Milenkovich played with expressive lyricism displaying a full spectrum of dramatic dynamic contrasts. His technical virtuosity was in abundance and flawless throughout the piece but particularly impressive as he played the demanding finale movement, "allegro con fuoco." In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of George Gershwin, Milenkovich was featured playing "Prelude No. 2 for Violin and String Orchestra," by the American composer. Originally composed for the renowned violinist Jascha Heifitz, "Prelude No. 2" is the embodiment of Gershwin's style in his serious works. The rhythms are dynamic, trenchant, and highly syncopated. Milenkovich captured the style and feeling of Gershwin with expertise, further demonstrating his musical adaptability and insight.

Until Sunday night I thought I was going to have to spend the rest of my life mentioning only Ida Kavafian every time Ravel's Sonata in G Major came up. While Kavafian's performance of the work in the 1982 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis remains memorable, Stefan Milenkovich's interpretation now can be discussed in the same breath. The 18-year-old silver-medalist of last year's fourth quadrennial competition included the Ravel in his all-sonata benefit recital for the Indiana Scholarship Fund (four stars out of four) for the Aspen Music School in the DeHann Fine Arts Center. He opened and closed with solo worksin order, J.S. Bach's Second Sonata in A Minor and Eugene Ysaye's Ballade Sonata No. 3 . Between these, his mother, pianist Lidia Caenazzo, joined him for Ravel's G Major and, after intermission, the big Frank A Major Sonata Frankly, when it comes to the violin competitions [of Indianapolis], I'm a devout silver-medalist, preferring [Ida] Kavafian in the first one, Leonidas Kavakos in the second, Marco Rizzi in the third and Milenkovich in the fourth. Of these, the young Yugoslav-born Milenkovich is the most impressive. Some people have said he should stop studying with his father, who is not famous as a fiddler or teacher, and take up with an artist-teacher. Perhaps, but why fix what's not broken?
