    The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

    Nathan Milstein
(violinist, born December 31, 1904, Odessa, Russia; December 21, 1992) As a young child in his native Odessa, Russia, he was forced by his mother to take violin lessons "to keep him out of mischief," a route being taken by a neighbor with her equally "wild" little son. By the time he was 11, his playing had been heard by legendary violinist Leopold Auer who invited him to become one of his pupils at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music. The classic violinist, who ranks among such beloved elder statesmen of music as Rudolf Serkin and the late Arthur Rubinstein and Pablo Casels, was the last active member of the great early crop of Auer pupils, a group that included Mischa Elman, Efrem Zimbalist, Jascha Heifetz, and Toscha Seidel, among others. In 1922 when he was doing joint concerts with Vladmir Horowitz in Kiev, a concert manager described his impression of him: "I saw him first in a rather disheveled way. He wore an overcoat obviously borrowed from someone with a sort of lady-like collar, and his hands were wrapped in some rags." He seemed oddly out of place compared to the elegant Horowitz. Yet their difference did not affect their friendship or their join musicianship.

Various sources report about the worldwide and intense touring of Nathan Milstein. However, no figures or further data are known or - maybe not so interesting in detail.
This page summarizes the concerts which N. Milstein gave in Austria during the years 1957 and 1985. The author of this summary attendet these concerts and can present the programs and the repertory of Milstein's appearances at the annual Vienna Spring Festival and the annual Salzburg Festival. The Vienna Festival is organized one year by "Wiener Musikverein", the other year by "Wiener Concerthaus", the two great concert societies. Milstein was only invited by the Wiener Concerthaus, not by the Musikverein. The overview may not be complete but it should give an impression of concert programs, recitals and orchestral concerts given in Austria during that time.

Bach's music may be too dense for some (especially since these pieces are unaccompanied) The Bottom Line A conclusive collection of an important body of work performed by one of the great virtuosos of all time makes this album an easy choice for any classical music enthusiast. Full Review Long a champion for Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas, it is no surprise for Nathan Milstein to record these works in its entirety. In fact, Milstein made two recordings of this collection in his career as a violinist, one in the 50’s and another in the 70’s. It is the first recording that this review concerns. (Note: I think that EMI decided to re-release the album done in the 50’s. And as is often the case for re-releases, they digitally alter the recordings to improve acoustics, which is a good thing, in my opinion, since the sound becomes cleaner and more “realistic.”) To fully appreciate Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas, it is important to understand two things. One is that even though Bach is famous for his religious compositions, these Sonatas are serious works requiring true virtuosity as well as being a key factor in shaping the later forms of classical music. The other is Milstein’s real understanding of these pieces. Milstein just about single-handedly brought Bach’s Sonatas into popularity among violinists; in fact, he had such an admiration for Bach that he learned to play the first sonata in G minor in its entirety when he was merely a boy in Petersburg. It should not be shocking, then, to recognize his authority on these pieces.

Musical Performance Recording Quality Overall Enjoyment Nathan Milstein was part of that generation of great Russian musicians born around the turn of the century and who left the fledgling Soviet Union in the 1920s. In fact, Milstein left Russia on the same ship as pianist Vladimir Horowitz. Milstein was possessed of a fabulous technique and great musicianship. For some reason, he is less well-known than the majority of the virtuosi of the 20th century, but this relative neglect is certainly not for reason of any lack of genius. There are just some musicians the public will take to their hearts, and others equally or even more talented whom they will not. In 1986 Milstein at the age of 82 and playing better than ever was in Stockholm to give two recitals which would be recorded for television. On the day of the first recital, he awoke to pain and stiffness in the first finger of his left hand. As there was no way to cancel the concert, he spent the day reworking the fingering of his entire recital an incredible undertaking, only made possible because throughout his lengthy career he had made a habit of reworking fingerings (sometimes during actual performances) in order to stave off that perpetual enemy of the good: routine.
