Wei Lu, 20, violin

The now 20-year-old Chinese violinist Wei Lu has received intensive support from the Anne-Sophie Mutter Circle of Friends Foundation for the last four years. The highly talented soloist impressed Anne-Sophie Mutter with his virtuosity in Beijing in December of 1997.
Wei Lu has since received private instruction courtesy of the Circle of Friends from Franco Gulli in Bloomington, Indiana (USA) and Professor Herman Krebbers in Amsterdam (Holland). He has also studied under Thomas Brandis, Yuri Bashmet, Walter Levin, Igor Oistrach, Uto Ughi, Ida Haendl, and others. A stipend from the Circle of Friends has made it possible for Wei Lu to study under Professor Ingolf Turban at the Stuttgart Music Institute.
Wei Lu has since become well acquainted with renowned classical composers and now speaks fluent German. These are basic requirements for studying in Stuttgart as well as for acquiring a deeper understanding of the musical intertwinings of the major violin concertos, which the young soloist interprets during his currently rare concert performances.

The answer is: YOU do, if it's this recording you're thinking of purchasing. First, the packaging is incredibly enticing (even without the sexy photo of Mutter! )and unusual opening, as it does, almost like origami. Then there's the sound: DGG must be congratulated. It is rare that one feels, even with a mediocre home sound system or a poor one in the car, as if the music is being played just for you and right in your presence. Then there's Mutter. On this recording, she is nothing short of perfection. I am very happy to own this truly first class rendition of the Vivaldi warhorse. LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER

"New York Philharmonic: Modern Times, Romantic Visions"
Kurt Masur, conductor; Anne-Sophie Mutter, violinist

Program Notes by MARTIN BOOKSPAN
For the second Live From Lincoln Center telecast of the New Year, we take our cameras and microphones back to Avery Fisher Hall for a concert by the New York Philharmonic and Kurt Masur, aided and abetted by famed violinist, Anne-Sophie Mutter. Nothing less than three masterpieces of the 20th century is the evening's menu, and their composersProkofiev, Berg and Sibeliushave earned honored places in the pantheon of creators whose music will continue to be heard as long as there are players to perform it and audiences to listen.
The concert begins with extracts from Prokofiev's music for the ballet, "Romeo and Juliet." Composed in 1935 for Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet company, Prokofiev's score was heard first in concert form in Moscow in October of that year. For reasons unclear it was three years before a ballet production was mountedand not in the Soviet Union but in Brunn, Czechoslovakia. That 1935 concert presentation was something of a harbinger of things to come: for though a number of ballet companies around the world have the work in their active repertories, one is much more likely to encounter Prokofiev's music for the ballet in the concert halla consequence of his having put together three Suites from the full score for concert performance . Indeed, one of the sections, "Montagues and Capulets," has been appropriated by Madison Avenue as background music for numerous radio and television commercials.

VIOLIN VIRTUOSO ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER
(last updated 26 September 2002)
A remarkable violinist, Anne-Sophie Mutter was Herbert von Karajan 's protege who grew into her own as she gracefully transitioned to a highly regarded concert performer. This page has been created to highlight her most memorable recordings done with and without her mentor. The only misgiving I harbor as regards Ms. Mutter is her lack of courage soon after the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attacks, during which she cancelled all appearances in the US except for an evening at Carnegie Hall in the fall. In her Kennedy Center, Washington DC concert, it was only thanks to Joshua Bell's last-minute substitution that ticketholders got to experience a delightful evening at the concert hall. It would have increased my esteem of Ms. Mutter if she showed a bit more spunk then, and the dangers in her concertizing were most likely to have been exaggerated in her mind. Ah well. We shall see if her audience shows up the next time she tours the USA. Below are a few personal opinions on some of Ms. Mutter's recordings. More will be added to the list in future. Please click on the photo, underlined title or the word "HERE" for each selection to go to the review (which opens on a new page). Any

The "Unplayable" Violin Concerto Has Mutter Playing Fantastically...
...While Herr Karajan Falls Asleep at the Wheel
Anne-Sophie Mutter's fiery and moving interpretation of the "unplayable" Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto is worth a listen, even if Herbert von Karajan inexplicably fails to do her and the piece justice.
Oh, my. At first I thought I was merely hearing things. And then I listened again, and again, and sadly confirmed that the embarrassing mistakes and temporal oddities were really there. The German violinist, Anne-Sophie Mutter , only one of today's fantastic performers, is not to blame, though. I love her thrilling, passionate and colorful interpretation of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto here. I much prefer her warmer yet no less technically proficient playing over that of even the legendary Jascha Heifetz . Those kind few who are familiar with my previous writings on classical music know that a deep passion emerging from the music is what I seek above all. But it is the great Herbert von Karajan who, I'm afraid, has gone beyond what is acceptable in terms of missteps here. Wake Up, M. Karajan, Wake Up!

Ludwig van Beethoven's Violin Sonatas with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis
Cycle begins airing on Classica (Germany) on April 28, 2001
In 1998 the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter dedicated herself to what was no doubt the most important project of her career to date. She performed all ten violin sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven on a world tour with the pianist Lambert Orkis. It was a climax in the longtime collaboration between the two artists. The live recording of the sonatas was released in fall 1998, while the tour was still underway. For this recording, the two artists won a prestigious Grammy Award in February 2000. Anne-Sophie Mutter's dazzling career began when the thirteen-year-old girl caught the attention of Herbert von Karajan, who promptly hired her to concertize with the Berlin Philharmonic. Today she numbers among the greatest violinists in the world. "For two hours we take part in a wonderfully spontaneous, edgy, witty, but at times also introspective dialogue - amazingly assured, freely phrased, masterfully braving every technical obstacle…"

"The Berlin Recital" (Deutsche Grammophon)
Taped before a live audience with the applause surgically removed, presumably to encourage airplay this recital showcases just how vital an artist violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has become. The imaginative phrasing and vibrato in Mozart's E Minor Sonata deftly balances lyricism with the music's classical order. The Debussy and Franck sonatas benefit from her pellucid tone but never sacrifice viscera. The Brahms miniatures are full of brio. Two complaints: The engineering seems to mute dynamics at times, and the modern music that's spurred so much recent growth in Mutter is absent.
