M c M A S T E R U N I V E R S I T Y THIRTIES Margaret "Boggs" Ewart ‘38 was the proud representative of her late husband, Dr. Hugo Ewart, at a dedication ceremony in December, when the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation named the former medical laboratory program building on the Chedoke site in his honour. Rob was cited for his "steadfast pursuit of excellence in education and for encouraging family medicine residents to surpass their goals." FORTIES In that 55-year lapse, a tiny campus had "exploded" from five buildings into a modern, technologically advanced school. Ronald, accompanied by his wife, Doris ‘47, didn’t recognize anyone or anything. That is, until he sat down at the Class of ‘44 dinner. From that point on, the dinner quickly became a humourous jaunt down memory lane. As it turns out, Ronald, who held the University record in the 100-metre dash for 11 years, once took Valene on a date to a Hamilton Tiger-Cat football game during their undergraduate years. "I invited her to that football game and it cost only 75 cents each to get in," Ronald remembers. "Imagine that today."

Culture and the arts
Australia’s contemporary arts are as unique and diverse as the society and continent they come from. They reflect an ancient landscape that is home to both the world’s oldest continuous cultural traditions and also to a rich mix of migrant cultures. Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists alike respond to the imaginative challenges Australia presents in diverse ways and have developed new modes of expression that have brought Australia’s art and culture to international attention. All forms of the performing arts, including music, theatre and dance, have strong followings in Australia and have reached new levels of sophistication and excellence in recent years. Australia has produced many outstanding poets and novelists, making its literature one of the most vital branches of contemporary writing in English. For the last quarter of a century, Australian feature films have enjoyed remarkable success, both in terms of popular as well as critical acclaim.

27th of May 2001 Yes, I went book hunting as promised last week in What's New. And I found some very interesting stuff! Two copies of Terri Windling's Faces of Fantasy (for a buck apiece!) were the best acquisitions. Nonfiction purchases included Masks of Bali: Spirits of Ancient Drama The Beatles: The Ultimate Recording Guid e, Mellencamp: Paintings and Reflections , and Green English: Ireland's Influence on the English Language . Fiction finds were Lewis Carroll's The Wasp in the Wig (a lost tale from Through the Looking Glass ), Caroline Graham's The Killings at Badger's Draft (an English pastoral mystery), William Kotzwinkle's Fata Morgana Arkham Asylum (a Batman graphic novel), Anne Perry's Bethlehem Road (a Victorian mystery), and Joan Vinge's The Snow Queen (sf). Before you think that our household is awash with books, I should note the entire third floor is the library, so everything is neatly tucked away on shelves. Well, most everything... With two humans and eight felines living here, nothing is ever completely orderly! First, an annoucement from Chuck Lipsig, our LOC Editor: "As mentioned several weeks ago

Allan will speak on the history of fire services in Inverloch. Last month Frank Eeles spoke on his earliest memories of the Wonthaggi State Coal Mine. Many of the names used in mining came from the Welsh mining influence i.e. "plat", "Skiffe", "plod". The coal seams were 3 to 4 feet 6 inches thick and in places narrowed to 18 inches. In 1937, at Number 20 Shaft, methane gas ignited and killed 18 miners - this was Wonthaggi’s worst mining disaster. Diesel fuel and natural gas spelt the end of mining at Wonthaggi which had operated from 1909 to 1968. Some of the Inverloch mine workers Frank mentioned were: Horrocks, Dicker, Sneddon, Harrison, Wangman and Hazeldean. Pay for 88 hours was £1.11.6 and 2/6 was deducted from all wages for the hospital fund. This covered free hospitalisation, medical care, pharmacy and dental treatment. A welcome was extended to new member, Joanna Lansdale.
