HAMISH MacCUNN Main Composers Magazine Concerts ... Tavener Details for this page have been provided by the British Music society. A Scottish Composer, Conductor and Teacher. There was no shortage of Scottish composers in the nineteenth century and early years of this century but their names no longer appear on concert programmes in Scotland or in other parts of Great Britain. We might recall names such as William Wallace, John B. McEwen, Learmont Drysdale and Hamish MacCunn but most of us would find great difficulty in recalling any of their music with the exception perhaps of one work by Hamish MacCunn. By now readers of this who are also avid television watchers might have remembered that the BBC Television series "Sutherland s Law" shown in recent years used MacCunn s Overture Land of the Mountain and the Flood as its title music. MacCunn, born on 22 March 1868, was a composer, conductor and teacher of great merit. Pupils who studied with him during the short time he was at the Royal Academy maintained that he was a born teacher of charming and unselfish character. He gained a high reputation in London musical circles as well as in countries abroad and expressed his Scottish heritage of poetry and romance more successfully than any of his predecessors. Many of his works exhibit a folk music element and MacCunn had a genuine love of Scottish folksongs but he disliked imitation, and detested songs like Wha Wadna Fight for Charlie or Within a Mile o Edinburgh Toun .

The band features the music of Glenn Miller and the swing era. It's acknowledged by the Miller Estate as one of the best tribute bands. Touring all the time. Assorted records and CD's... does not sell to dealers but distributes at concerts. Old stuff finds it way onto cheap and cheerful CD/LPs. Sad to relate, Syd Lawrence passed away on May 5, 1998. He was 74. Even during the early days, 1967-1970, the band was playing a Glenn Miller style of music. In 1968, the band had a fairly steady position at the Mersey Hotel. There was a three shilling entrance fee and patrons could listen or dance. By 1969, the band was playing to capacity audiences every Teusday evening, with folks coming from Newcastle, Birmingham and even from London. They were playing in the second floor Ballroom, while the famous Irish Tenor Joseph Locke was singing in the first floor cabaret. It was here that TV producer John Duncan and TV star Les Dawson heard the SLO. Later, Syd's band would back Les in all of his 'Sez Les' shows on Yorkshire Television , from 1970 -'73. Granada TV also featured the SLO in a saturday night spectacular, live from the Mersey Hotel.

Darien Scheme The Darien Scheme was a plan, in the last years of the 17th century, to start a Scottish colony in Darien (on the isthmus of Panama). The idea was that this would enable Scottish merchants to take part in trade beteeen the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, instead of ships having to take the long and hazardous voyage round Cape Horn. One of the leading proponents was William Paterson, a Scot who was also a founder of the Bank of England. A vast amount of money was raised to finance the scheme and in 1698, the expedition set sail from Scotland. The whole scheme finished in disaster due to disease in the swamps and jungles of Central America, and from attacks from native Indians and Spanish colonists. The results was that Scotland was greatly impoverished and the fiasco was a significant factor in bringing about the union of Scotland and England in 1707. A full account can be got in John Prebble's 'Darien', One of the many people who went to Darien, never to return, was Robert Balnaves , a steward's mate on board the ship 'Caledonia'. His brother, James, was appointed executor of his estate in 1707. There are no other clues as to who these might be but there is a family of Balnaves with a Robert and James from

Naumburg Foundation Award while still a student of Edouard Dethier at the Juilliard Graduate School of Music. In the same year, she made her debut at Town Hall and received the Distinguished Achievement Medal from Mademoiselle Magazine as the Young Woman of the Year in music. With her sister Maro, a pianist, she concertized in Europe and Canada as well as throughout the United States in a repertoire including works written for them by such noted composers as John Cage, Henry Cowell, Alan Hovhaness, Ernst Krenek, Lou Harrison, Wallingford Riegger, Carlos Surinach, and Ben Weber. Contents Chronicle Lower School Contact website editor School News 1997 Corresponding Chronicle reports from other years FRIENDS OF BGS Following the success of their Summer Ball, the Friends of BGS organised another new social and fundraising venture in the form of a highly popular ‘Racing and Casino Night’ in November. A well-attended evening presentation on Pastoral Care at the School was held under their in February. Staff and pupils representing the House and Year systems spoke of the work of these two pastoral structures. Mrs Pemberton, as senior mistress, described her liaison work with the school doctor and nurse. Mr Perry gave an exposition of the School’s parents’ meetings and reports. The evening concluded with questions from the floor addressed to a panel of staff and pupils chaired by the Headmaster. In March the Friends handed over to the School a new video projector which had been paid for out of their various fund raising activities over the past year. The new projector was immediately put to good use, to show video extracts illustrating the work of wildlife photographer Steve Nichols. Steve, a distinguished naturalist and former BBC film director, is the husband of Vicky Nichols who taught mathematics here for a number of years. The Friends concluded a triumphantly busy year with a Summer Ball, hoping to surpass the success of last year’s inaugural venture.

Since then I have attempted to be ‘less big’. I can’t say if I’ve achieved that and, on occasions when I’ve told people to tuck their shirts in or stopped them Sellotaping their friends to the desk, I must have seemed very big indeed. I have had enormous pleasure and pride in working with forty-one brilliant prefects. I apologise to them for all my nagging and getting them up early for events such as Charter Day. They have put in a lot of effort over the year and, I think, have all enjoyed it. Special thanks must go to Margaret Johnstone and Jo Paterson for all their help and advice. One of the best parts of the job has been attending school events. From reading at Charter Day, which will remain special to me forever, to watching a wonderful school play. It has been a true delight to see BGS pupils being so active and talented and even more of a delight to see so many prefects involved in sports matches, carol service or concerts. I have a lot to thank BGS for and hope that in my year ‘in office’ I have been able to give something back. I have been very lucky to be in such a position and I will miss it, as will all the prefects. Our thanks go to the Headmaster, John Clarke, Mr Snook, Rev. Hulme and Mr Tonks. Reviews Composer Back Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) Like many other famous composers, Felix Mendelssohn began his musical life as a child prodigy. He and his sister Fanny learned many languages and artistics pursuits from their mother. Felix, born in Hamburg, performed at the piano and composed music from a very early age. The social life of his parents brought him widespread recognition, and provided much experience. His grandfather was a Jewish philosopher, but his father (a banker) left the Jewish faith for Christianity and adopted the family name of Bartholdy which is why Felix's surname is sometimes quoted as Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. As a young boy, Felix met and befriended the elder Goethe who was to prove an enduring influence on the musician. Mendelssohn toured Europe visiting a number of countries where he sketched musical fragments later to be turned into concert works, which is why a number of his works bear titles suggesting these countries. He visited Scotland, writing the seeds for his Scottish Symphony and the Fingal's Cave overture (following a trip to visit the Isle of Staffa, near Mull) and meeting Sir Walter Scott. He sketched his Italian Symphony while visiting Rome and Naples, and note that three of his "Songs Without Words" are Venetian Boat Songs. He was famous particularly in his native Germany and in England, a country he visited several times becoming a favourite of Queen Victoria. He first performed his oratorio Elijah in 1846 at the Birmingham Festival. In his mature years he was to hold a number of posts in Dusseldorf, Berlin and Leipzig where he worked closely with Robert Schumann. His health declined rapidly after hearing of the death of his sister Fanny, he himself dying a few month later.
