Violinist
"That he has accomplished so much with a crippling disability is a source of
amazement and admiration for all who come in contact with this remarkable man."
One of the greatest violinists of our era, Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1945. The son of a barber, he took to the violin at an early age, receiving his first lessons at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv. A prodigy from the start, he was taken to the United States at the age of thirteen to participate in Ed Sullivan's Caravan of Stars, a traveling musical showcase for gifted children. At the end of this somewhat grueling tour, he decided to stay in America to study, and he was quickly awarded scholarships by the Juilliard School and the American-Israeli Foundation to study with noted pedagogue Ivan Galamian and his assistant, Dorothy DeLay.

Perlman made his formal debut in the spring of 1963 at Carnegie Hall, playing the Wienawski F-sharp minor Concerto with the National Orchestral Association; there happened to be a newspaper strike that week, so no critical notices were recorded. The next year, however, the young violinist entered the prestigious Levintritt Competition in New York (the same contest that helped to launch the careers of Van Cliburn and Pinchas Zukerman) and won first prize. Thereafter, he signed with legendary impresario Sol Hurok, who booked a fifty-city American tour for his rising star.

Itzhak Perlman Discusses Child Prodigies and Handicap Access
By PIA LINDSTROM In the movie "Shine," a teacher warns a young musician to watch out for the Rach 3: "It's dangerous!" The Rach 3 is not a pterodactyl, it's Rachmaninoff's treacherously difficult Piano Concerto, No. 3. In this movie based on the Australian child prodigy David Helfgott, the young musician has a breakdown and spends years in a mental institution after tackling the Rach 3. Itzhak Perlman, the violinist who has a home on the East End, was host at a benefit screening of "Shine" at the East Hampton Cinema for the Hamptons Summer Music School, which is run by his wife, Toby Perlman. Q. Can music make you crazy? A. So many things can drive you mad as a child, not only music. This particular case was a very extreme situation. But it's not just musicians, it's tennis players, everybody. Any gifted child can potentially get in real trouble because of the way they are handled. I always say an unusual talent is an abnormality because kids don't have talents like that, not your average child. You're open for great dangers. You've got so many things that can go wrong. No. 1, parents. What is the agenda of a parent? Do they want their child to be successful, or do they want to have success through their child? For every child prodigy that you know about, at least 50 potential ones have burned out before you even heard about them.

St. Louis Symphony lands violinist Itzhak Perlman as music adviser
ST. LOUIS (AP) Luminary violinist Itzhak Perlman agreed Thursday to serve as music adviser to the financially troubled St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for the next two concert seasons, symphony executives said. Perlman will fulfill some of the functions but not replace Hans Vonk, who cited health problems when he stepped down in May as the symphony's music director and principal conductor, said Randy Adams, the symphony's president and executive director. Perlman, who Adams said has performed with the orchestra since 1966, said he is "very excited" about becoming its music adviser. As the search presses on for Vonk's successor, Adams said, Perlman's work with the symphony largely will be artistic and "behind the scenes," involving such things as helping with hiring musicians, offering programming guidance and appearing in public events for the symphony. Perlman also will conduct two local concerts a year. Adams made it clear the ensemble's landing of Perlman after weeks of talks was a coup. He did not specify terms of the contract with Perlman, which covers the 2002-03 and 2003-04 concert seasons. Each season runs from about mid-September into the following spring.

7. Clovis, New Mexico Class Of 1959
On Nov. 18, 1995, itzhak perlman, the violinist, came on stage to givea concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.
http://www.geocities.com/bobolinker/violin.html
An article from the Houston Chronicle......
On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slowly, is an unforgettable sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play. But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap – it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there that night thought to themselves: "We figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again, pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage to either find another violin or else find another string for this one."

The fiddler king
Jascha Heifetz, born 100 years ago, was the violinists' violinist. Itzhak Perlman remembers his hero and friend
Thursday April 19, 2001
The Guardian

My first encounter with Jascha Heifetz must have come when I was about three years old. In Israel in the late 1940s there was a lot of classical music on the radio and I recall that they played a lot of his recordings. Later I realised that everything in the history of violin playing could be divided into BH and AH: Before Heifetz and After Heifetz. I first met him when I was a nervous 14-year-old. He'd come to the Juilliard School, New York to hear some of the violin pupils. I played him the Lalo Symphonie Espanol and a Paganini Caprice and then my teacher, Ivan Galamian, said I could go. But Heifetz said, "Not so fast! I want to hear scales." Thankfully, my previous teacher in Israel had placed great importance on exercises, and I was well prepared - so when Heifetz told me the scale he wanted to hear, I could play it straight off. So our friendship started on the right foot.

The most acclaimed violinist of his generation, Itzhak Perlman has achieved a level of respect and admiration throughout the world that bears witness to his humanity and his charm, as well as his formidable artistry. His irrepressible joy in making music has been one of the hallmarks of his career, and it was cited by U.S. President Ronald Reagan when he bestowed on Perlman the nation's Medal of Liberty in 1986. Perlman is also one of the most prolific and versatile recording artists of his time. For Sony Classical he recently reunited with Academy Award-winning composer and conductor John Williams for the recording Cinema Serenade with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, featuring new arrangements for violin and orchestra of popular contemporary film music. Included in the recording was an excerpt from Williams' Academy Award-winning score for Schindler's List, for which Perlman had been soloist on the film's soundtrack. The violinist has called his participation in the film one of his proudest achievements. Yo-Yo Ma , Frederica von Stade, Rudolf Firkusny and the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa Born in Israel in 1945, Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv. Delightful and engaging concert given by violinist Itzhak Perlman
ITZHAK PERLMAN Works by Beethoven, Webern, Stravinsky, Bloch, and Gershwin. Sunday, April 9, Symphony Hall. By DAVID STERN ITZHAK PERLMAN IS PROBABLY THE most renowned violinist playing today, and Sunday's performance at Symphony Hall once again made clear why. His performance was consistently nothing short of amazing. Perlman is the quintessential Beethoven violinist; when he played the first violin sonata, it was if he were playing his own work. Next came Webern's Four Pieces for Violin and Piano , an early 12-tone work. It is strange, mystifying music, but the performances made it quite enticing. After the piece, Perlman charmingly stated, "Due to the short duration of these pieces, it is a tradition to repeat them," at which point the performers did. Stravinsky's Divertimento was a complete delight. With Perlman's synergetic performance, parts of the piece were as powerful as a symphonic performance of Rite of Spring
