Institute of American Studies Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Violinist Itzhak Perlman Opens Graduate Program in Shanghai Scores of young gifted instrumentalists gathered in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to attend the long-awaited graduate program offered by the Israeli classical violinist Itzhak Perlman. The Shanghai program is the first established outside New York, where the 56-year-old virtuoso's music school is based. This year's program attracted 68 students, 28 of whom are from countries other than China, and all of whom were hand-selected by Perlman. Wearing T-shirts with the logo, "beautiful music", these 12-18 year old students of violin, viola, cello and piano are expected to experience Perlman's doctrine of "joyful learning" during their three-week close encounter with the master.

Perlman Scores with Young Players Itzhak Perlman, conducting a master class in Shanghai, instills a passion for music in his students. Awe. Unabashed awe, written on the faces of the young musicians who are granted an audience with the world's most celebrated violinist. Was he pompous, supercilious, a strict disciplinarian who wouldn't abide a flat note? Hardly. Itzhak Perlman is a charming, funny, family man who helps children find pleasure in music. The world's most famous living violinist was worried. "Are they OK? Why aren't they here yet?" asks Itzhak Perlman, wondering the whereabouts of the children on New York's Shelter-Island-based Perlman Music Program. The children were supposed to be joining him by now for dinner at the Donghu Hotel where he stays in the city. The maestro had no time for food, instead wheeling himself in and out of the dining room to check about why the children were late.

Itzhak Perlman Explores His Klezmer Soul Concert review: Itzhak Perlman and four klezmer bands at Tanglewood by Shel Horowitz Tanglewoodthe Berkshire summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestrawas never like this before! Normally the province of tuxedo-clad classical musicians playing orchestral favorites, this night saw classically trained performers wearing casual clothingeven some tie-dyed t-shirts ... an array of drums and amplifiers on stage ... audience members clapping out the complex rhythms ... and lots of dancing in the aisles of the Shed. The featured performer was violinist Itzhak Perlmanno stranger to Tanglewood and other great classical stagesbut the music was not classical, but klezmer. Klezmer, the folk music of Eastern European Jews, is a lively and varied music. Like so much of Jewish culture, klezmer lives and breathes and changesconstantly drawing from its surroundings. From minor-key dirges influenced by Jewish liturgy and Arab folk traditions, to hard-driving dance music backed by roaring clarinets and trumpets, to lightning-fast Hungarian Gypsy fiddle tunes, klezmer has absorbed the traditions around it in every country where the Jews of Eastern Europe settledincluding the United Sates, where klezmer has sometimes been called "Jewish jazz." Note to Yiddish speakers: I did the best I could with the spellings. Please forgive any errors. It was in the U.S. that klezmer was rediscovered in the 1960s and '70s, the spirit of the old wandering musicians breathing new life into the music as ensembles of young musicians began to explore an almost-lost tradition.

Itzhak Perlman, Violinist
From the book, The Right Words at the Right Time edited by Marlo Thomas, Atria Books Of the thousands of pieces of advice, inspiration and encouragement I’ve received over the years, the most powerful one—the one that has played a central role in my life, both as a child and an adult—boils down to a single word: practice Although my parents loved to listen to music of all kinds, they weren’t professionally trained. What they could do, however, was monitor my commitment to the instrument by listening for the sound of music coming from my room. If they didn’t hear my playing, it was “Practice!”
I did it, mind you, sometimes three or four hours a day. But I found it to be mostly drudgery. What I really wanted to do was play new pieces or be outside with other kids. But because the discipline of practice was instilled in me at just the right time-when I first picked up the violin, to be exact—it has become an elemental part of my craft. Nowadays, practicing is second nature to me, a matter of habit, really. How often I practice depends on how well I have been playing.

St. Louis Symphony lands violinist Itzhak Perlman as music adviser
ST. LOUIS (AP) Luminary violinist Itzhak Perlman agreed Thursday to serve as music adviser to the financially troubled St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for the next two concert seasons, symphony executives said. Perlman will fulfill some of the functions but not replace Hans Vonk, who cited health problems when he stepped down in May as the symphony's music director and principal conductor, said Randy Adams, the symphony's president and executive director. Perlman, who Adams said has performed with the orchestra since 1966, said he is "very excited" about becoming its music adviser. As the search presses on for Vonk's successor, Adams said, Perlman's work with the symphony largely will be artistic and "behind the scenes," involving such things as helping with hiring musicians, offering programming guidance and appearing in public events for the symphony. Perlman also will conduct two local concerts a year. Adams made it clear the ensemble's landing of Perlman after weeks of talks was a coup. He did not specify terms of the contract with Perlman, which covers the 2002-03 and 2003-04 concert seasons. Each season runs from about mid-September into the following spring.

Yangcheng Evening News, 19 August 2002 Ruan Wei, Zhuang Yuan
On 17 August afternoon, in a little hall on the 25th floor in Shanghai's Jincang Wenhua Hotel, the world renowned, critically-acclaimed violinist, granted this paper's reporters an interview.
The award winning virtuoso violinist, Itzhak Perlman, has, inter alia, received 15 Grammy Awards and being honoured with 4 Emmy Awards. In the classical music world of the present era, there exists in Itzhak Perlman some sort of oxymoron: While he is an earnest musician who is being well-respected, he also possesses an infectious charisma. His innate humour blends flawlessly with his pyrotechnics of musical technical perfection and ardour, imparting his performance a singularly novel, refreshing charm.
Itzhak Perlman was born in Israel in 1945. Itzhak Perlman completed his initial training at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv with Rivka Goldgart. In 1963, He gave a rousing performance in the Carnegie Hall. After studying at the Juilliard School, Itzhak Perlman won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964, which began his burgeoning worldwide career.
In December 1990, Perlman to participated in a gala performance in Leningrad celebrating the 150th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's birth. This concert, which also featured Yo-Yo Ma, Jessye Norman and Yuri Temirkanov conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic, was televised live in Europe and later broadcast throughout the world and is now available on home video (RCA/BMG Classics). There, he performed Tchaikovsky's lively Valse-Scherzo and gave an utterly spellbinding and mellifluously heart-wrenching rendition of Serenade Melancholique.

Itzhak Perlman
Violinist Israel/ USA Born 31 Aug 1945
Itzhak Perlman was born in Israel and moved to the USA in 1958, where he trained at the Juilliard School in New York. His success in winning the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1964 launched his international career through which he has become known as one of the world's leading musicians.
Itzhak Perlman has appeared with every major orchestra and in recitals and festivals throughout the world. In November 1987 he joined the Israel Philharmonic for history-making concerts in Warsaw and Budapest, representing the first performances by this orchestra and soloist in Eastern block countries. He again made history as he joined the Israel Philharmonic for its first visit to the Soviet Union in April 1990 with concerts in Moscow and Leningrad. In recent years Perlman has continued to perform with leading orchestras in addition to touring major cities throughout the world with his accompanists Bruno Canino and Samuel Sanders. In 1996 Perlman's engagements included concerto and recital appearances throughout Europe, Asia and North America, including appearances with many of the world's foremost orchestras and composers.
A documentary of Perlman's historic trip to the Soviet Union with the Israel Philharmonic, entitled 'Perlman in Russia', was honoured with one of the very highest accolades of the media world: the 1992 Emmy Award for outstanding classical programme in the performing arts. This EMI Classics video charts Perlman's visit to Moscow and Leningrad - a visit which coincided with the 150th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's birth. The documentary shows Perlman honouring the composer's grave and he also gives a performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in the Bolshoi Philharmonic Hall, St Petersburg, accompanied by Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic.

Itzhak Perlman camp offers haven for young musicians
Web posted on: Tuesday, July 14, 1998 4:50:02 PM From Correspondent Jill Brooke NEW YORK (CNN) What does it take to inspire future musical talents? Violinist Itzhak Perlman could have the answer a camp that gathers students committed to learning, and sets them in an environment conducive to their development as artists. The Perlman Music Program in Easthampton, New York, provides just that. Students attending the camp get instruction from some of the best musicians in the world.
The final product
"Usually, we hear them on CDs, and you only hear the final product there," one student says. "But at this camp, we get to work with them and sort of see virtuousity behind the scenes." The program is costly $1,800 for three weeks but two-thirds of the students reportedly receive financial help. Fundraisers with musicians from Pincus Zuckerman to Billy Joel help support the scholarships.
