Since then he has appeared with the world’s greatest orchestras including the Boston Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, La Scala Milan, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. I was pleasantly recommended this recording. I have had the opportunity to hear Vadim Repin 'live' in a Shostakovich Violin Concerto a couple of years ago with the SSO and even bought his recording of the Shostakovich No.1 and the Prokofiev No.2 with Kent Nagano conducting (Erato 0630-10696-2). Vadim Repin won the prestigious Wieniawski International Competition at the tender age of 11. Later at 17, he triumphed at the Reine Elisabeth Concours. He studied with Professor Zakhar Bron, said to be one of the foremost Russian violinists since the likes of Heifetz, Oistrakh and Milstein. Repin has worked with conductors the likes of Nagano, Boulez, Marriner and Temirkanov. He has also performed in recitals with Boris Berezovsky (Wow, I would love to hear this twin partnership 'live'), Bella Davidovich and Markovich. He has won the Diapason d'Or Choc du Monde de la Musique Terama, and was highly praised for his recording of the Ravel Sonata No.2 and the Medtner Sonata No.3 "Epica", (with Berezovsky, Erato 0630-15110-2).

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC When violinist Vadim Repin made his Seattle debut a decade ago during the inaugural season of that dazzling meteor, the Seattle International Music Festival, he was slightly awkward and very young, fresh from winning important European competitions. However, once he put bow to fiddle, no one cared because his gifts were so huge, not only in terms of sheer virtuosity, but also his command of music. WHEN: Friday night
WHERE: Benaroya Hall The Russian violinist returned to Seattle to solo with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra a few years ago, and on Friday night the symphony invited him back, this time for a recital on its Distinguished Artists Series, which is in the midst of a particularly noteworthy season. For those with expectations, Repin did not disappoint, and for those without them, he was surely just as rewarding. There are reasons beyond hype why he is called "the greatest living violinist."

'Wallpaper' is more than a layer deep

It's somehow characteristic of Theater Schmeater to have an idea as good as adapting "The Yellow Wallpaper," early feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman's autobiographical short story about postpartum depression and the "rest cure." Her barely fictionalized account is not obviously the stuff of drama, and adapter/director Heather Newman transforms it into an interesting play rather than a great one. Aghh!I've accidentally chipped an edge of my violin with the end of my violin bow screw! It's only a very little thing but I still feel very upset. I've stuck the broken piece on with PVA glue but the cracks still show. Will this affect the sound of my violin? If it was repaired do the cracks still show? Has anyone had the same crisis? Helppp! Violinist Repin puts the flair in the music By Steven Mark

Seattle Times staff E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive Perhaps what was most remarkable about the young violin virtuoso Vadim Repin's wonderful recital Friday night was all the things he didn't do. He didn't try to overwhelm you with his singing, sweet sound. He didn't impress upon you that his fleet finger work and precision bowing were any more difficult than they obviously were. He didn't make austere poses, funny faces or overwrought gestures, save at the very end when he smiled warmly at the standing ovation he received and gave his partner, pianist Boris Berezovsky, a brief bump of a handshake. Certainly he swayed and slashed with the music, but it was within the context of delivering the music in clean, elegant lines and with all the colors that his Stradivarius could produce. The result was a deeply gratifying performance, one well deserving of the accolades he has received. Concert review

Flutist returns to his Scottish roots in toe-tapping program By Melinda Bargreen

Seattle Times music critic Vadim Repin E-mail this article Print this article Search web archive While researching folk music of many different origins, from Cape Breton to Celtic, Norman decided to take up the bagpipes "so that I could become a better traditional flute player. I just did it privately at first, but people love the pipes. I play them a bit on 'The Caledonian Flute' CD, and I'll bring them to Seattle, too." Norman has a collection of historic flutes, usually traveling with a couple of early-19th-century flutes. Norman's ensemble includes instrumentalists Jamie Blachley, Andy Thurston and Simeon Darley Chapin. The flutist/leader says, "They're a very congenial group, with a lot of mutual respect and love. I think we're going to be around for a long time." A violin wizard Want to hear the young player the Berlin Tagesspiel calls "the greatest living violinist?" We thought so. It's Vadim Repin, the young Siberian-born violinist who dazzled the world by winning Belgium's coveted Queen Elisabeth Prize at the age of 17. The baby-faced wizard of violin technique is coming to Seattle for a Distinguished Artists Series recital in Benaroya Hall, at 8 tonight, in an event eagerly awaited by local fiddle fans.
