Lord Menuhin’s 80th Birthday celebration Gala Concert at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels 24 April 1996 On the occasion of his 80th birthday Yehudi Menuhin presented for the first time his son Jeremy to the Belgian public. He interpreted a Mozart concerto under the baton of his father. Yehudi Menuhin also conducted Vadim Repin, former winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, in Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole as well a symphony of Beethoven that the Sinfonia Varsovia interpreted with it’s usual virtuosity. Presented by the International Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, this concert tolerance between people. The programme mirrored this quality as it celebrated the 80 years of a man who worked all his life for openness and gathered Rossini, Mozart, Beethoven and Lalo, two soloists, one British, one Russian as well as a Polish orchestra. All the dimensions of the greater Europe, of which Yehudi Menuhin is one on the most complete incarnations. The following day Lord Menuhin was the guest of honour of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Community. He participated in a debate on a Europe of Cultures: a defence plea for a dialogue between the voices of the states and the voices of the people. At eighty, Yehudi Menuhin resolutely follows the work of this life time: creating links, building bridges, encouraging dialogue.

CSO to focus on the great masterpieces
Mary Ellyn Hutton, Post music writer Paavo Jarvi will encore his first season as Cincinnati Symphony music director with a focus on the great masterpieces. That's the best way, he said, to help the orchestra know him better and to establish a close working relationship. ''One of the most important things for me is to try to find a certain common ground with the orchestra in key repertoire important repertoire that one needs to start a process with. Paavo Jarvi ''After all, it is a very young marriage.''

Information about the scholarship holder's concert-data is available from ASMStiftung@uumail.de Current scholarship recipients
Wei Lu, 20, violin

The now 20-year-old Chinese violinist Wei Lu has received intensive support from the Anne-Sophie Mutter Circle of Friends Foundation for the last four years. The highly talented soloist impressed Anne-Sophie Mutter with his virtuosity in Beijing in December of 1997.
Wei Lu has since received private instruction courtesy of the Circle of Friends from Franco Gulli in Bloomington, Indiana (USA) and Professor Herman Krebbers in Amsterdam (Holland). He has also studied under Thomas Brandis, Yuri Bashmet, Walter Levin, Igor Oistrach, Uto Ughi, Ida Haendl, and others. A stipend from the Circle of Friends has made it possible for Wei Lu to study under Professor Ingolf Turban at the Stuttgart Music Institute.
Wei Lu has since become well acquainted with renowned classical composers and now speaks fluent German. These are basic requirements for studying in Stuttgart as well as for acquiring a deeper understanding of the musical intertwinings of the major violin concertos, which the young soloist interprets during his currently rare concert performances.
A current concert schedule is available from ASMStiftung@uumail.de

Dave Helland Geoffrey Fushi is a renaissance man with a touch of P.T. Barnum. Adept in both scholarship and showmanship, equally at home in the worlds of art and business, he is also the man with the multi-million dollar violins who knows how to put on a good show. Recently he traveled to China with $15 million worth of violins: one for each movement of Vivaldi's Four Seasons that was performed by the leading Chinese concert violinist, Siqing Lu, who was presented with the one of the instruments. The televised concert was seen by hundreds of millions of people. "Seeing that the best player gets the best instrument, that's something that is known and understood around the world about the Stradivari Society," explains Fushi. "If a person is associated with the society it means that they are someone of special merit."
