In January 2003, Jean-Luc Ponty toured in India for the first time, 7 shows in 6 major cities for the Global Music Festival organized by Indian violinist L. Subramaniam. Jean-luc brought along his bassist Guy Nsangué Akwa, both performed with Subramaniam's band and drummer Billy Cobham who was also a guest star on this tour.
Jean-Luc's Live album recorded in 1979 in California for Atlantic Records was just re-issued on CD by Wounded Bird Records. Check the 1979 Discography page for details.
In November 2002 , Jean-Luc performed with his group in Paris, the first time he appeared in the French capital in 7 years. He also received a medal from the French Government (Chevalier du Mérite National).
A new CD 'Live at Semper Opera' recorded in-concert in Dresden, Germany in May 2001, was released on Jean-Luc's own J.L.P. Productions, Inc. label in July 2002. It is presented in a very beautiful digipack and distributed by Navarre Distribution in North America and by Le Chant du Monde/Harmonia Mundi in other world territories. Great performances by members of his current band, William Lecomte on keyboards, Guy Nsangué Akwa on bass, Thierry Arpino on drums and Moustapha Cissé on percussion. Read more
'Life Enigma' , Jean-Luc's first studio album in a long time was released on J.L.P. Productions, Inc. in North America and France in July 2001. The first release on his own label. A return to his sound from the 70s and 80s with a very modern production, mostly a solo effort where JLP plays several instruments with added performances by members of his current band (same line up as in 'Live at Semper Opera').

Violin Concerto in D minor, op.47
Sergei PROKOFIEV
Symphony No.5 in B-flat major, op.100 Vadim REPIN violin
SHUI Lan conductor OVERALL NOISE RATING: 3 (Kids talking at the beginning of the concerto; coughing and more coughing. ) The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. This review has been kindly sponsored by the Singapore Symphonia Co. Ltd Last Concert Reviewed Next Week's Concert by Jason Tan and the Inkpot Sibelius Nutcase tm Jason Tan reports on the Saturday Concerto performance: There's no doubt that many, if not all, came for the concert to hear the "greatest living violinist", Vadim Repin. I'm not fully certain of the validity of that title, but Repin certainly didn't disappoint my high expectations. Together with his absolutely fantastic Ruby Strad, Repin weaved a realm of Finnish mystical fantasy, full of vitality and sonority. The wonderful timbre of the violin is full of rich glorious brightness, but never thin, metallic or superficial. Repin's vivid personalized account of this popular work was not only an exhilarating ride, but also had a beautiful conviction that left me enraptured. He has shown remarkable versatility and mastery of his instrument, transcending pure virtuostic perfection to play this concerto most convincingly. What impressed me the most was that inner calmness that manifested even when he attacked the most difficult of passages with pin-point accuracy.

ETERNAL IMAGES IN MODERN DRAMATURGY
a talk with poet and playwright Victor Korkia
Whether a theatre is prospering or going through a crisis, critics never stop urging directors to put on more contemporary plays. The latter agree... and yet, most of them prefer staging classics. Nevertheless, quite a number of dramatists rose to prominence in the past decade - Nadezhda Ptushkina, Maxim Kurochkin, Yelena Isayeva and others. One of them is the poet and playwright Victor Korkia. Victor started writing poems in 1969 and in the 80s he ranked among the top five poets of Moscow. But is was not until 1988 at the peak of Gorbachev's "perestroika" that his first collection of poems and his first play "I Am A Poor Soso Jugashvili", with Joseph Stalin (whose father's name was Jugashvili) as the principal character, came out in print. The parallels drawn by the author, the slightly altered monologues of Czar Boris Godunov from Alexander Pushkin's drama, inserted into the text, induced thoughts about the nature of power in Russia, ways of achieving and maintaining it. "We, post-modernists, are very fond of quotations: we use them as metaphors", Victor Korkia explains. "All we hear around us enters our vocabulary. In fact, there isn't any poetic trick or poetic image that can't be found in Homer".
