THE EPULSE8 A peek at the notebooks of your favorite editors 1. FILM SOUNDTRACK OF THE WEEK:
2. WAKE-UP CALL OF THE WEEK: Instead of wasting his first legal year drinking, Phil Evrum's been busy giving his daydreams a soundtrack. Already having made quite a niche for himself in the Pacific Northwest's venerable indie-rock scene by beating the shit out of the drums for bands like Old Time Relijun and D+ and producing at Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic, Evrum makes noise of a different sort with his nom de plume THE MICROPHONES. His latest effort, 'DON'T WAKE ME UP' (K, 8/24), combines the dreamy shyness of My Bloody Valentine with the lo-fi ethics of home recording to get a sleepy sound that is at once reticent and intimate. Guitars lead a game of hide-and-seek through a lonely room with samples, tinkly keyboards, vocal harmonies and abused drums all shrouded in the fog of a fuzz pedal. The outcome is music so sweet and soothing, you'll want to grab it by the hand and take it for a walk, or maybe just curl up with it for a daydream of your own. (Willis)

Playing the sixth Brandenburg Concerto of Bach with SBSO principal violist Catherine Franklin will mark the first time I have performed as a solo violist publicly since the 1981-82 season. Each of Ginastera’s Variaciones is a solo for one of the principal players of the orchestra. Aaron Rosand At that time my father gave me $1.00 a week as an allowance. So every Saturday I would buy two subway tokens for 15 cents apiece and go down to Greenwich Village where there were some out-of-print book and record stores. The remaining 70 cents was sometimes enough to acquire a used lp if I hadn't already spent 25 cents for a hot dog! It was there that my collection of Aaron Rosand performances on Vox records began. At the time I really didn't know how to differentiate between his playing and anyone else's. All I knew was that I liked it.

http://www.audiofonrecords.com/Rosand/rosand-bio.htm
Aaron Rosand Internationally acclaimed as one of the master violinists of our time, Aaron Rosand is renowned as an artist of unique personal style. The late Pablo Casals spoke of Mr. Rosand as the extraordinary violinist "with a powerful, expressive manner of playing, reminiscent of his old friend, Eugene Ysaye." In the grand tradition of virtuosity, he is noted for his interpretations of the 19th century repertoire. American born of Russian mother and Polish father, Aaron Rosand made his debut at the age of ten with the Chicago Symphony under the baton of Frederick Stock. Since then, he has collaborated with such eminent conductors as Leonard Bernstein, William Steinberg, Erich Leinsdorf, Fritz Reiner, Mstislav Rostropovich, Klaus Tennstedt, and Kyril Kondrashin, and has performed with the major orchestras of the world. Aaron Rosand is Professor at The Curtis Institute of Music, continuing the tradition of his late professor, Efrem Zimbalist. He is also guest professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and at the L'Academie d'Ete in Nice in the summers. To learn more about Aaron Rosand, please visit

I n the year 1850 in Cologne there was presented to the musical world the first symphony by Max Bruch aged twelve years. Born Januray 6 1838, Bruch had the good fortune to be the son of a highly esteemed soprano and music pedagogue. His mother became overseer of her son's musical fortunes and because of her experience and associations was able to guide him along the smoothest pathways to a sound musical training. Combining this with a domestic atmosphere of devoted love for the craft she nurtured his great gift until it found fulfillment in the esteem of many of his contemporaries.

Aaron Rosand's discography with Vox is highly distinguished. His first recordings for the company date from the late 50's and he is still recording in his 70's. Playing better than ever, this man is a phenomenon!
