forthcoming concerts International reviews CD reviews Curriculum Vitae Hailed for his "thrilling virtuosity" (The Strad) and a "tone as thick and vibrant as Jascha Heifetz" (The Independent), Hagai Shaham is internationally recognized as one of the most exciting violinists to have emerged from Israel in recent years. Mr. Shaham was the last student of the late renowned Ilona Feher. Mr. Shaham's awards include first prizes at the Ilona Kornhauser competition, the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, the Israel Broadcasting Authority "Young Artist" competition, the Tel Aviv Rubin Academy competition, four Clairmont Awards, and annual scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. In 1985 Hagai Shaham was invited to join Isaac Stern and Pinchas Zuckerman in a gala concert at Carnegie Hall, in honor of Maestro Stern's 65th birthday. Shortly afterwards, he made his debut as soloist at the South Bank Centre in London, the Montreux Festival and performed with all the major orchestras in Israel, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta . The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. Ltd by Chia Han-Leon If the tempo with which an orchestra dares to execute the Russlan and Ludmilla Overture is an indication of their skill, then allow me to pre-pay the SSO and Okko Kamu (left) my profoundest respects. It's always a good sign when you walk into the Hall and see more than a handful of players still practising their parts on stage. When the whole SSO finally gathered, there was a light atmosphere of expectancy over them. I guess they knew what was coming. From the first shots of the timpani, the SSO transformed into this huge spinning thing on stage. The strings were a tornado, swirling into their exultant melody with gusto. The celli, with their magnificent second subject melody, were in excellent voice. I have heard the SSO play with the utmost unity before, but not often with such supreme eloquence. I marvelled at their sense of uplift, the seeming ease and their expressive commitment, while trying hard to forget that my mouth was hanging open. Okko Kamu was a sight himself as he turned page after page of his conductor's score every few seconds!

Espina sisters perform in Paco Park Presents Taking center stage in Paco Park Presents this Friday, June 14, are the talented Espina sisters, pianist Mary Ann Espina and soprano Nenen Espina. The program is part of the monthlong celebration of the 104th anniversary of Philippine Independence. Maribel Fernandez is program host. In 1996 and 1997, she was one of the visiting artists who performed at the People Republic of China as part of the Filipino-Chinese Exchange program. Nenen was also the former conductor of the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod Chorale which won in the last NAMCYA College Choral Competition at the CCP. Paco Park Presents is weekly cultural project of the National Parks Development Committee, under exec. director Jaime K. Recio, and the National Broadcasting Network. It is aired nationwide over NBN Channel 4 every Friday at 6 p.m. and is directed for television by Villamor M. Paredes from a script by Gie O. Villasor. Federico A. Edos is the executive in charge of the concert project. Admission is free.
