Hungarian Dances 'old' and 'new' "Albert Spalding was not only the first, but one of the few American violinists to attain a reputation of world importance. He was a composer of note, author of two books and, in two wars, undertook extremely important and delicate missions abroad."
These are the first lines of Albert Spalding's biography on the back of R-199-144, the recording of the performance of the Beethoven Violin concerto with the Austrian Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Loibner. These lines describe in a nutshell the personality and character of this famous American: violinist, composer, author and intelligence officer. Albert Spalding died on the 26th of May 1953 when dressing up for dinner. The music world losst "the first great instrumentalist this country has produced" as Walter Damrosch had described Spalding years before. And Fritz Kreisler had said in a tribute to Albert Spalding in 1951: "He never fails to play on the heart strings of the listeners (...)."
Albert Spalding was born in Chicago. His father was J. Walter Spalding, a well to do businessman and partner in the known sporting goods firm. After initial studies in Chicago, young Albert spent most winters in Europe with his family in Florence. Already at the age of 14 he graduated at the Bologna Conservatory. He continued studying in New York with Juan Buitrago, and in Europe with Ulpiano Chiti in Florence and with A. Lefort in Paris. He was one of only three foreign born students to be admitted to the Paris Conservatory, the other two being Fritz Kreisler and Eugene Ysaye.

Biography of violinist, albert spalding

Albert Spalding Biography Sponsored by:
NVI Classical Records
From the liner notes of Albert Spalding Plays Beethoven "Kreutzer" Sonata and Bach Chaconne, Allegro 1675 Albert Spalding was not only the foremost American Violinist of this century, but in all probability the greatest instrumentalist this country has ever produced. In addition to the fame he established in the world's finest musical centers, he was also a pioneer in bringing the finest classical music of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart to all States of the Union. In the summer months, when the Spalding family returned to America, Albert's studies continued with Juan Buitrago, an old Spaniard. In Paris, he had two years of supplemental study with Lefort of the French National Conservatory. At 16, with Lefort conducting, he made his concert debut playing the Saint-Saens Concerto in B minor, Beethoven's Romance in F and the famous and difficult Bach Chaconne. Immediately thereafter, he appeared in support of the celebrated soprano, Adelina Patti. "Young man," the aging singer exclaimed, "you'll do." A tour of the French provinces followed. At this period the veteran composer, Saint-Saens was so impressed with Spalding's artistry that he appeared with the boy in a joint recital in Florence. England was next on list and through Saint-Saens' recommendation, Spalding was engaged by Hans Richter, eminent conductor and friend of Wagner, for appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra. Spalding this visited Joseph Joachim, the foremost violinist of the 19th century after Paganini. The veteran, already past the three-quarter century mark, refused to accept the young man as a pupil. He told him that his course was already charted and that he should proceed as he had begun.

Albert Spalding Back Order Form Volume 1 Volume 2 ... Albert Spalding Albert Spalding was one of the most prolific musicians of his time. Not only was he a superb violinist ranking with those of the greatest renown, he was also accomplished in other fields. As a composer, he was the third most productive violinist of his contemporaries. As an author, he published several books. As a patriot, his dedication to his country brought him to active duty in both World Wars. His service in WW II may have contributed to his early demise, making him a war hero who virtually gave his life for his country. I am pleased that A Classical Record is taking pains to bring the memory of Albert Spalding back into focus. -Albert Spalding Benoist,
Monmouth Beach, NJ April 3, 1997 Albert Spalding was born in Chicago, August 15, 1888. His father was James Walter Spalding, the younger brother of Albert Goodwill Spalding. His mother was Marie Boardman an outstanding contralto, a gifted pianist and harpist. So, it was no surprise that the youthful Albert developed a musical fascination at a very early age. It was "A.G." who was immortalized in the Cooperstown, NY museum for his contribution to baseball and who founded the famous A. G. Spalding & Brothers sporting goods firm with his brother and brother-in-law. In 1895, the J. W. Spalding family began spending their winters in Florence, Italy. It was there on Christmas day, at the age of seven years, that Albert received his first "
