True to form, Toronto artist John Scott has produced a gritty display of sinister imagery for this new drawing installation. Scott's ominous figures loom large along the walls and across the ceiling, transforming a usually bright and airy room into a place of menace and dark foreboding. Designed specifically for SNACC, Scott's Rorschach Attack (pronounced "roar-shack") sets the stage and tone for an eclectic mix of Winnipeg performing artists In the Lounge Andrew Hunter, SNACC's new Artistic Director, wants to do something with an edge that will make a bold statement about SNACC. Says Hunter, "This program expresses my artistic vision it is multidisciplinary and eclectic but it also has a thematic focus. John Scott's imagery gave me a focus and the selection of artists who will perform in his installation reflect different aspects of Scott's art. Scott's vision of the world is a dark one. It has a gritty street sensibility, but it is also imbued with confidence and compassion. I want to be clear about something. New Brunswick Pianist Richard Raymond Winner of 1998 Virginia Parker Prize Ottawa, 11 January 1999 The Canada Council for the Arts is pleased to announce that Richard Raymond is the recipient of the 1998 Virginia Parker Prize. The prize, worth $25,000, will be presented to him in Toronto on 16 January during a concert with the Toronto Symphony where he will perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 under conductor Kerri-Lynn Wilson. Originally known as the Virginia P. Moore Prize, the Virginia Parker Prize was established in 1982 by the late Colonel T.A.G. Moore and his wife, Virginia P. Moore. Moved by her profound love of music and the recognition that talented young musicians need an award to help them take a leap forward in their careers, the late Mrs. Moore established the prize for young performers of classical music who demonstrate outstanding talent and musicianship. Richard Raymond Born in 1965 in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Richard Raymond's superior talent rapidly brought him to the fore of young Canadian concert pianists. He earned national renown in 1990 when he won First Prize in the 18-25-year-old category of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition, as well as First Prize in the Canadian International Stepping Stone Competition. The following year he won the Grand Prize, First Prize and the Prize for the best performance of a Canadian work in the CBC Radio's National Competition for Young Performers . In 1993, he was the first Canadian to receive the Chamber Music Prize in the prestigious Van Cliburn Competition, and in 1998, he took Second Prize in the William Kapell International Piano Competition.

The Vancouver Sun Thursday, December 9, 1999 Some of the best laud Getz VANCOUVER RECITAL SOCIETY 20TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, Tuesday LLOYD DYKK SUN MUSIC CRITIC Of course not all parties go just as planned. There were supposed to be 12 musicians to fete Leila Getz on the combination of her birthday and the 20th anniversary of the Vancouver Recital Society Tuesday at the Chan. But the Borromeo String Quartet of Boston couldn't come when a violinist got chicken pox, and the organizers (still trying to keep Getz in the dark about the players) suddenly had to find, and did, a fill-in fiddler and cellist to make up a quartet with musicians already on hand. So there were 10, not 12, and it didn't matter. They represented a small, eloquent fraction of the hundreds of internationally proven and eminently promising talents that Getz has imported for the last 20 years. Some who couldn't make it in person conveyed their congratulations by video: Cecilia Bartoli, chatty and merry; a dignified, sincere Evgeny Kissin; Bryn Terfel at home in windswept Wales, serenading her with his booming baritone; Yefim Bronfman conveying like sentiments around a mouthful of sushi, then beginning Tchaikovsky's

About the Musicians The Kings Noyse David Douglass director and violin Ellen Hargis soprano Robert Mealy violin and viola Scott Metcalfe viola Margriet Tindemans viola Emily Walhout bass violin David Douglass Robert Mealy has received much critical acclaim for his eloquent and imaginative performances on a wide variety of historical strings. He has toured and recorded with many distinguished ensembles both in North America and Europe, including Les Arts Florissants, Sequentia, and the Boston Camerata, with whom he has served as concertmaster for a decade. Along with the King's Noyse, Mr. Mealy is happy to be a member of several chamber groups, including the medieval ensemble Fortune's Wheel and Louis Louis, currently artists-in-residence at Columbia University. He is a frequent leader and soloist in New York. Mr. Mealy is non-resident tutor of music at Harvard, where he directs a wonderful undergraduate baroque orchestra. He often writes about music, and teaches historical improvisation and technique at workshops across the country. He has recorded over 50 cds on most major labels. Scott Metcalfe Margriet Tindemans enjoys a busy career as a performer on various stringed instruments from the medieval fiddle to the baroque viola and viola da gamba, but is delighted to be concentrating more and more on her many students, at home and at workshops, and on the Seattle-based Medieval Women’s Choir, which she directs. She directs Medieval Strings, and is a member of The King’s Noyse. She is principal violist in the Seattle Baroque Orchestra and in the Boston Festival Orchestra. She was a member of Sequentia from 1977-1987, and has appeared with many prominent early music ensembles in Europe and North America. She directs a medieval workshop which meets alternate years in Spain, where concerts are given in places on the Camino de Santiago, the famous medieval pilgrimage route, and in Seattle. She has taught at the University of Washington, Indiana University, Case Western and Oberlin and records for Harmonia Mundi, Erato, Wildboar and Centaur.

His most celebrated disc, Celtic Mass for the Sea, has been selected by the Canada Council as part of a compilation CD of Canadian Artists to commemorate 50 years of the United Nations. A blending of the celtic, choral and classical traditions, the Celtic Mass for the Sea is a timeless piece of music that encompasses Nova Scotia's maritime and musical cultural heritage. The work is a collaboration with Jennyfer Brickenden, the CD's Executive Producer and with whom he operates Scojen Music Porductions Ltd. His other featured recordings are Guitar Souls with David MacIssac and Songs for the Cape with Octet. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Mr. Macmillan went on to study composition and arranging at Toronto's Humber College before returning to Halifax to pursue his musical career. His original music has taken him from the mermaid Puppet Theatre to the Montreal Jazz Festival to frequent performances with Symphony Nova Scotia and among the diverse cultural communites in Nova Scotia.
