True to form, Toronto artist John Scott has produced a gritty display of sinister imagery for this new drawing installation. Scott's ominous figures loom large along the walls and across the ceiling, transforming a usually bright and airy room into a place of menace and dark foreboding. Designed specifically for SNACC, Scott's Rorschach Attack (pronounced "roar-shack") sets the stage and tone for an eclectic mix of Winnipeg performing artists In the Lounge Andrew Hunter, SNACC's new Artistic Director, wants to do something with an edge that will make a bold statement about SNACC. Says Hunter, "This program expresses my artistic vision it is multidisciplinary and eclectic but it also has a thematic focus. John Scott's imagery gave me a focus and the selection of artists who will perform in his installation reflect different aspects of Scott's art. Scott's vision of the world is a dark one. It has a gritty street sensibility, but it is also imbued with confidence and compassion. I want to be clear about something. This isn't meant to be a "tight fit" the combination of art and performer are loose and spontaneous, like Scott's work. It's like being in a laboratory you throw things together and see what happens, sometimes the result is volatile and sometimes it fizzes."

Steenbergh and Sephrona Cooper John B. Steenbergh was born in Schenectady, New York approximately January, 1816. In numerous census records he states that his occupation is wheelwright or wagon maker, which was a skilled trade. A wheelwright is someone that makes wheels for horse carts and wagons. In his later years he stated that he was a "carpenter." One of the questions asked on the census is "Where were your parents born?" According to the federal census, John's father was born in New York and his mother was born in Massachusetts. John B. The critics have quickly come on board: American Record Guide, May 2002 At long last, Lara St. John has returned to the recording studio after establishing her own record label and has given us more music by her favorite composer. We have here the canonical solo concertos in A minor and E and the Double Concerto in D minor. The performances are delightful, individual, even exciting, unlike any other recording of these works that I know. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with St. John's playing. Before I heard this recording, I never realized that this music had so much drama, specially in the slow movements. As with any really great performance, I felt as though I were hearing the music for the very first time. The New York Bach Ensemble is a superb group that brings out the contrapuntal interplay between orchestra and soloists like no other group I've heard. Best of all, they match the soloist's enthusiasm. One thing I especially like is that the keyboard part is sometimes assigned to a chamber organ rather than the usual harpsichord.

Featured Choirs: Chor Leoni Men's Choir and Elektra Women's Choir Performed at The Orpheum Theatre, 20 January 2001 This evening of inspired programming provided a rich indeed almost overly rich retrospective survey of twentieth-century compositional techniques. These were perhaps all the more focussed because chronological programming was necessarily abandoned to accommodate the programme's main work, Gustav Holst's massive and perennially popular The Planets. Dialogo dei massimi sistemi, about the communicative power of writing, the piece for male choir, string orchestra, and percussion, evoked the wonder of language with understated awe beautifully rendered by the hushed tones and carefully modulated delivery of the Chor Leoni Men's Choir. With occasional nods towards Samuel Barber and Ligeti, Sharman's paean to human ingenuity was a prelude of things to be returned to with the evening relentlessly moving towards the wordless, haunting conclusion of The Planets Benjamin' Britten's rarely heard Violin Concerto, Op. 15 (1939), given an intensely focussed and emotional reading by Canadian violinist Scott St. John, moved into a realm of concentrated sorrow and anguish of nearly unbearable intensity. Effortlessly rising to the piece's technical challenges, St. John's performance, offering great tonal beauty, exhibited a continuous sensitivity to the score's nuances and colours. His detailed playing fully explored the emotional depths of this heartbreakingly beautiful piece completed shortly after Britten's arrival in the United States for wartime exile.
