Rumpole of the Bailey gs Herbert Norville (Defendant) Joyce Heron (Hilda Rumpole)
Rumpole defends a young black man charged with attempted murder - while admitting that the best chance of getting his client off is that the judge turns out to be a Jamaican teenager. This was the first Rumpole story to be written, having been commissioned from John Mortimer by the BBC as part of a television series called 'Play for Today'. The story was eventually published under the name Rumpole and the Confession of Guilt Rumpole was born and was at once played by Leo McKern, though Joyce Heron took the part of Hilda for the first and only time. It was to be two more years before the concept of a television series could be realized.

I realize that I just sent out an issue a few days ago, but in the meantime an item mentioned in that issue was in error, so as I make that correction I decided to send along a few other items as well - items that didn't make it into the last issue or arrived here after the issue was e-mailed. The heat wave apparently will continue here in NYC (and I understand in other parts of the US as well) so my advice is to head for your nearest cabaret room, keep cool, have a refreshing drink, and enjoy a show. That's what I plan on over the weekend.
