Since October, the former women's basketball standout has been back to visit for the Christopher B. A marathon runner. A one-time professional singer in a pop and rock band (who has since scaled back to chorale tenor). A collector of fine wines, and a window shopper for the vintages he'd love to own. A scientist whose teaching and research take place at the intersection of mathematics and computer science, and whose appreciation for the Jesuit tradition of education includes a commitment to the liberal arts, a keen interest in academic innovation, and a strong belief in the value of service learning. Meet Dr. Timothy Law Snyder, who will join Fairfield University as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on July 1, 2001. Having spent the last fourteen years at Georgetown University - as a faculty member, department chair, and Dean of Science - Dr. Snyder considers the opportunity to assume a broader role at Fairfield University a matter of "Divine luck." "Fairfield is known as a strong institution, with a strong faculty, strong administration, and bright students," he says. "In making a change, I wanted to remain affiliated with the Jesuit educational tradition because of its intellectual muscle, emphasis on the liberal arts, and commitment to service. Fairfield University is a place attuned to life in all its dimensions, and is actively engaged in service to society. For me, that's a real fit, as is the Jesuit appreciation for other cultures, subcultures, and traditions."

Take the road to a musical paradise
By Christopher Woods
Students with a bit of money can escape for a summer of music among the stars.
Music students not constrained by poverty to to toil in a pub or a burger bar during July and August could have done a lot worse than to spend part of their holidays at an international music festival, whether in the alpine pastures of Switzerland or the equally languid surrounds of an English country estate in South Devon.
For those who prefer the lure of the continent, the Verbier Festival and Academy has it all. Located in the shadow of the Alps in the Valais region of Switzerland, where meadows abound with wild flowers and butterflies, and the bells of Alpine cattle compete with crickets and babbling mountain streams. Verbier is a paradise of a peculiarly Swiss variety. Even without the music festival, the sharpened, pure air would make an essential retreat from stifling practice rooms and the urban pollution that cloaks most conservatories.
But there is music, the hills are positively alive with it. For which thanks are due to Deutsche Grammophon executive Martin Engstroem, who decided as he skied down the mountain one winter a decade ago that Verbier would make a good festival site. "I liked the fact that it was a dead end: there was one road up and the same road down," he says. "You could work with the atmosphere here."

GAZELL PRODUCTIONS
Sam Charters, cofounder of Gazell, seems to have been everywhere. As a producer with the Vanguard, Folkways and Prestige labels, he worked with the cream of jazz and folk. He also produced jazz albums for Sonet, a Swedish label. He produced Clifton Chenier's Grammy-winner, I'm Here. Charters has written a number of books, including The Roots of the Blues, winner of the Deems Taylor Award in 1983. The Gazell catalog contains excellent albums he produced for Sonet. The newer stuff includes Dave Von Ronk's Humming to Myself. The collaboration between Charters, a chronicler of music history, and Van Ronk, whose expressive voice is imbued with music history, works well.

by Michael Raven Chris Bartam: photograph: Mike Raven After 15 years in the wilderness Chris Bartram has returned and is rapidly re-establishing himself as a leading exponent of that elusive creature, the English Style of Folk Fiddle. It seems that a condition of entrance to the National Folk Festival these days is that both performers and punters sport grey beards and beer bellies, whatever their sex. These, like the blackened faces of some morris men, now serve as effective disguises. Tony Rose and I spent 20 minutes talking to each over breakfast at Sutton Bonington this year before each realised who the other was, such had old man time re-worked our once youthfully fine features. Anyway, our scoffing duly done, Tony hopped on to his Zimmer frame and zoomed off to a sound check, whilst I hobbled over to the trade stands in search of my quarry for the day, one Christopher Bartram. It wasn’t easy, but I finally found him hiding in a dark corner, blubbering hysterically: " Oh no," he moaned, "not Rottweiler Raven; they haven’t sent Rottweiler Raven." "Pull yourself together man," I said masterfully, flicking my whip against my thigh-length patent leather boots and tipping back my German sub-mariners’ cap to a suitably rakish angle. "It won’t take long and then you’ll be famous. All those strapping ladies from female morris sides ladies will follow you, squealing at your every turn and trill, begging you to play with them – sorry, I mean play for them."
