Music students not constrained by poverty to to toil in a pub or a burger bar during July and August could have done a lot worse than to spend part of their holidays at an international music festival, whether in the alpine pastures of Switzerland or the equally languid surrounds of an English country estate in South Devon. For those who prefer the lure of the continent, the Verbier Festival and Academy has it all. Located in the shadow of the Alps in the Valais region of Switzerland, where meadows abound with wild flowers and butterflies, and the bells of Alpine cattle compete with crickets and babbling mountain streams. Verbier is a paradise of a peculiarly Swiss variety. Even without the music festival, the sharpened, pure air would make an essential retreat from stifling practice rooms and the urban pollution that cloaks most conservatories. But there is music, the hills are positively alive with it. For which thanks are due to Deutsche Grammophon executive Martin Engstroem, who decided as he skied down the mountain one winter a decade ago that Verbier would make a good festival site. "I liked the fact that it was a dead end: there was one road up and the same road down," he says. "You could work with the atmosphere here."

P Q R S T U V W X Y Z Edward Aldwell, Chair of Musical Studies Department Mr. Aldwell received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Adele Marcus. He studied theory and Schenkerian analysis privately with Carl Schachter and later with Ernst Oster. He taught keyboard studies at Juilliard from 1966-70 and has been on the Mannes College of Music faculty since 1969. Mr. Aldwell performs recitals throughout the U.S., many of them devoted to the works of Bach. He has recorded both books of The Well-Tempered Clavier , as well as the Goldberg Variations Harmony and Voice Leading . Mr. Aldwell joined the Curtis Institute of Music faculty in 1971. top Susan Shiplett Ashbaker, Opera and Voice Coach top Jerome Ashby, Horn Mr. Ashby joined the New York Philharmonic as associate principal horn in 1979 and in 1982 made his New York Philharmonic solo debut. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, but raised in the North, Mr. Ashby attended the Performing Arts High School in New York City. He subsequently attended the Juilliard School, where he was a student of James Chambers, former New York Philharmonic principal horn. An active recitalist and chamber musician, Mr. Ashby performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic Ensembles and has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as well as at various music festivals around the world. A faculty member at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music and the Aspen Music Festival School, Mr. Ashby joined the Curtis Institute of Music faculty in 2000.

Deaths Helen Clark Renwick, Feb. 24, 1998. Following her graduation from Bates, Helen Clark Renwick taught in the high schools of Bridgton and Littleton, Mass. In 1920 she married classmate Erle B. Renwick, known for his talent as a soloist. Over the years they lived in Connecticut, Virginia, Portland, and Bolsters Mills, and she retired to St. Petersburg, Fla. Her son, Robert '52, wrote that "although nearly blind and quite deaf, she kept up with the Boston Red Sox and was an avid baseball fan. She also completed puzzles in the daily paper." Among her survivors are sons Robert and Erle Jr., daughters Dorothy and Jean, and 13 grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her in 1972. Frances Minot Tillson, March 16, 1999. Frances Minot Tillson taught at Madison High School for two years after she graduated, then was a teacher and dean of girls at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield. When she married Stanley C. Tillson '23 in 1926 they moved to New York, later to Pennsylvania and Maryland. After their children were grown, from 1955 to 1972 she taught English in Maryland at Bel Air High School and at Darlington Junior High School. The Tillsons retired to Brockport, N.Y., to care for son David '49, ill with multiple sclerosis. Frances Tillson drove to her 50th and 60th Bates reunions, retiring to Florida and later moving to Durango, Colo., to be near a daughter. Among her activities, she had been a reading volunteer for seventh graders and volunteer at a local nursing home. Survivors include daughters Mary and Marjorie, son Minot, 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1969 and son David in 1977.
