Product Description
Community ecology is the study of the interactions between populations of co-existing species. Co-edited by two prominent community ecologists and featuring contributions from top researchers in the field, this book provides a survey of the state-of-the-art in both the theory and applications of the discipline. It pays special attention to topology, dynamics, and the importance of spatial and temporal scale while also looking at applications to emerging problems in human-dominated ecosystems (including the restoration and reconstruction of viable communities).

Community Ecology: Processes, Models, and Applications adopts a mainly theoretical approach and focuses on the use of network-based theory, which remains little explored in standard community ecology textbooks. The book includes discussion of the effects of biotic invasions on natural communities; the linking of ecological network structure to empirically measured community properties and dynamics; the effects of evolution on community patterns and processes; and the integration of fundamental interactions into ecological networks. A final chapter indicates future research directions for the discipline.

FEATURES
* Incorporates the latest developments in the field and complements the existing textbook literature on community ecology
* Includes a mix of theoretical and applied chapters and a balance of emerging and established research topics
* Covers future research directions and provides ideal reference material for graduate courses in community ecology ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing book
I bought this book with the intention of using it for some classes of community ecology and ecosystems, and had a high expectation that this book would be very useful. However, the content and style of it does not meet my expectations. I think that is very focused on food webs and as such, the editors must be more honest to acknowledge this in the title. There are several current issues about the ecology of communities that are ignored in this book and in this sense is not useful as a general reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Great resource for graduate students and researchers. Provides a solid background in the current understanding and uncertainty surrounding community ecology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I teach a university course in community ecology.There aren't that many recent texts on the subject, so I was quite excited to receive this one.However, it was profoundly disappointing at nearly every turn.First and foremost, despite its broad title, this is not a book for anyone without extensive pre-existing knowledge in community ecology.Second, it is an edited volume, with some chapters that are so specialized (e.g. one on salt marsh management) as to render them useless for most readers.Third, the cited references are not given at the end of each chapter, nor are they compiled in an overall alphabetical list at the end of the book--it's something in between, with references grouped by chapter at the end of the book, a clunky way of doing business.Finally, there are two common conceptual approaches in most of the chapters, pertaining to network theory in food webs and metacommunity theory (still unsatisfyingly theoretical), with little else to glean from this book.

So, if you are a student or teacher looking for a general or introductory book on the subject of community ecology, look elsewhere.If you are a community ecologist looking for the hot trends of the field, look elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most important books ever written
Daly's work is indeed brilliant. She sees through to the core of this patriarchal world and her book is a merciless expose of the atrocities committed against women by men. Telling the truth about patriarchy requires the ugliness of men's evil deeds to be uncovered, like picking up a rock and seeing the squirming, slimy crawlies hiding underneath it; nevertheless she is not about hating men but about hating the world they have created (don't you?) and she is all about loving women.

I first read Daly's work decades ago and then somehow lost sight of it - yet, when re-reading this book, I could not understand why or how this had happened (but of course life happens). In "Gyn/Ecology" Mary Daly (RIP) explores the methods that have been used to keep women bound, showing a relationship between many seemingly disparate phenomena including Nazism/fascism, Indian suttee, Chinese footbinding, genital mutilation (Africa and Arab countries), European witchburnings and American Gynecology (modern medicine - with its chemical and surgical "cures" for the disease of femaleness - now being understood by many but Daly was far ahead of her time when this book was first published in 1978) - how all these evils are proof of the deep hatred of male for female.

Daly explains in each of these types of hate-cripplings & hate-killings how the basic elements were/are identical:
1. fixation on "purity";
2. erasing male responsibility (Chinese mothers broke and bound their daughter's feet and African/Arab mothers excise their daughters' genitals, etc. This is done to ensure daughters' respectability and marriagability but it creates hatred of mothers);
3. how the maiming/killing spreads from upper classes to lower, in pyramid fashion;
4. women used as token torturers (in modern medicine, the nurses and the few women doctors - again creating hatred of women);
5. obsessive and repetitive (reptilian) in a compulsively orderly manner, with a fixation on details, which serves to misfocus attention from the fact of phallocratic evil;
6. all of the horror and dissipation/misfocusing of energy quickly becomes accepted as normal and remains so for hundreds, often thousands, of years;
7. the sado-ritual becomes legitimized by researchers and "scholars" who write with indifference and detachment and who minimize the sadistic nature of these acts - the basic cultural assumptions which make the atrocious ritual possible and plausible remain unquestioned, and the practice itself is misnamed and isolated from other parallel symptoms of the planetary patriarchal practice of female maiming and massacre - erasing their significance.

Worldwide and for thousands of years, four methods have been essential for mystification in the games of the fathers: erasure of women (massacre of millions of women as witches has been massively erased in patriarchal scholarship), reversal (Adam gives birth to Eve, Zeus to Athena, in patriarchal myth), false polarization (male-defined "feminism" is set up against male-defined "sexism" in the patriarchal media), and divide and conquer (token women are trained to kill off feminists in patriarchal professions). Deeper and deeper layers of these demonic patterns are embedded in the cultures, implanted in our souls, and constitute mind-bindings comparable to the footbindings which mutilated millions of Chinese women for a thousand years.

From this book and also the second half of "The Great Cosmic Mother" (also a classic) I really felt deeply how all men need all women to be unhappy, that they need the energy sucked from women, who are the natural energy-creators - whilst denying what they are doing. As an earlier review confirms, "the historical facts are well-researched and supported thru direct quotations from men who have perpetrated and defended the torture & killing of women in the name of "culture". Daly strongly refutes the argument that one society cannot judge the practices of another, proclaiming that the lives of women take precedence over such constructs as culture."

One of the most important books ever written.

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
I've been wanting a copy for years. Haven't finished it - so far a classic Mary Daly read.

1-0 out of 5 stars twattle
The most ridiculous tripe....... should only be read for the laugh!! Specious feminist arguments that are illogical, distorted, and pernicious should anyone take this seriously.

3-0 out of 5 stars Non Fiction
Gyn/ecology : the metaethics of radical feminism
by Mary Daly is an interesting, if a bit on the whacky side of feminist texts.If you have no interest in feminist rhetoric, or any of that sort of thing, you don't need to waste any of your time with this, although it is certainly presenting a different viewpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best all around resource for ecological studies
Begon's book is the best way to get a serious handle on the complexities of ecology. This book attempts no dumbing down and gives more resources than could ever be used in a lifetime.
The explanations given for basic concepts are unique and cannot be found anywhere else. For example, this book makes a clear point about the relationship between evolution and ecology. Chapter One starts off with a discussion of natural selection that is unique; seems that one must rely on an ecologist for a full understanding of evolution. Begon suggests that the word abaptation be used to describe the match that most organisms display with their environment because that word carries with it the historical meaning that is left out of the picture when the word adaptation is used to descirbe the match between organism and environment.
All important areas of ecology are covered; population dynamics, energy in communities and biological diversity. Again, I have yet to see, after having examined several major publishers' offerings, a better book for either someone just getting started in ecology or a person already well versed in the topic.

Product Description

In Vibrant Matter the political theorist Jane Bennett, renowned for her work on nature, ethics, and affect, shifts her focus from the human experience of things to things themselves. Bennett argues that political theory needs to do a better job of recognizing the active participation of nonhuman forces in events. Toward that end, she theorizes a “vital materiality” that runs through and across bodies, both human and nonhuman. Bennett explores how political analyses of public events might change were we to acknowledge that agency always emerges as the effect of ad hoc configurations of human and nonhuman forces. She suggests that recognizing that agency is distributed this way, and is not solely the province of humans, might spur the cultivation of a more responsible, ecologically sound politics: a politics less devoted to blaming and condemning individuals than to discerning the web of forces affecting situations and events.

Bennett examines the political and theoretical implications of vital materialism through extended discussions of commonplace things and physical phenomena including stem cells, fish oils, electricity, metal, and trash. She reflects on the vital power of material formations such as landfills, which generate lively streams of chemicals, and omega-3 fatty acids, which can transform brain chemistry and mood. Along the way, she engages with the concepts and claims of Spinoza, Nietzsche, Thoreau, Darwin, Adorno, and Deleuze, disclosing a long history of thinking about vibrant matter in Western philosophy, including attempts by Kant, Bergson, and the embryologist Hans Driesch to name the “vital force” inherent in material forms. Bennett concludes by sketching the contours of a “green materialist” ecophilosophy.

Product Description

The growth, reproduction and geographical distribution of plants are profoundly influenced by their physiological ecology: the interaction with the surrounding physical, chemical, and biological environments. This renowned textbook is notable in emphasizing that the mechanisms underlying plant physiological ecology can be found at the levels of biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, and whole-plant physiology. At the same time, the integrative power of physiological ecology is well-suited to assess the costs, benefits, and consequences of modifying plants for human needs, and to evaluate the role of plants in ecosystems.

This new edition of Plant Physiological Ecology features updated material, as well as full color images throughout. Boxed entries provide extended discussions of selected issues, and a glossary and numerous references to the primary and review literature are included.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This book does have a lot of good info. However, some of the figures come directly from scientific articles and their legends can be difficult to follow. There is also information presented on certain topics that is not yet fully accepted in the scientific community. There are also a few topics that are presented in a confusing manner, which make them hard to follow unless you reread them. The copy that I got is made with high quality sturdy paper, so it should last for a really long time. Overall it is a decent book but I think that it could have been organized in a format that was easier to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
I use this book as a starting point on specific topics in plant physiology & ecophysiology from the plant cell to plant global communities. Indeed, it is not an intro course in plant physiology and very broad but I would recommend this book for graduate students, it is helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars A complex book - not for the beginner
This book covers a lot of ground, beginning with photosynthesis, plant-water relations, and plant energy balances before discussing ecological aspects of plant physiology.While it follows a logical progression from the cell to the ecosystem scale, the book is very difficult to read.The authors try to cover too much material in the book, omitting basic material in order to broaden the focus of the book.Therefore, it is definitely not for those who are looking for a basic book in either plant physiology or plant ecology.As a textbook, it is difficult for undergraduate students to understand, and seems to be geared towards graduate students and those already familiar with the field. ... Product Description

Wolves are some of the world's most charismatic and controversial animals, capturing the imaginations of their friends and foes alike. Highly intelligent and adaptable, they hunt and play together in close-knit packs, sometimes roaming over hundreds of square miles in search of food. Once teetering on the brink of extinction across much of the United States and Europe, wolves have made a tremendous comeback in recent years, thanks to legal protection, changing human attitudes, and efforts to reintroduce them to suitable habitats in North America.

As wolf populations have rebounded, scientific studies of them have also flourished. But there hasn't been a systematic, comprehensive overview of wolf biology since 1970. In Wolves, many of the world's leading wolf experts provide state-of-the-art coverage of just about everything you could want to know about these fascinating creatures. Individual chapters cover wolf social ecology, behavior, communication, feeding habits and hunting techniques, population dynamics, physiology and pathology, molecular genetics, evolution and taxonomy, interactions with nonhuman animals such as bears and coyotes, reintroduction, interactions with humans, and conservation and recovery efforts. The book discusses both gray and red wolves in detail and includes information about wolves around the world, from the United States and Canada to Italy, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Israel, India, and Mongolia. Wolves is also extensively illustrated with black and white photos, line drawings, maps, and fifty color plates.

Unrivalled in scope and comprehensiveness, Wolves will become the definitive resource on these extraordinary animals for scientists and amateurs alike.

“An excellent compilation of current knowledge, with contributions from all the main players in wolf research. . . . It is designed for a wide readership, and certainly the language and style will appeal to both scientists and lucophiles alike. . . . This is an excellent summary of current knowledge and will remain the standard reference work for a long time to come.”—Stephen Harris, New Scientist

“This is the place to find almost any fact you want about wolves.”—Stephen Mills, BBC Wildlife Magazine

5-0 out of 5 stars Wolves: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation
Anyone wishing to extend their knowledge of Wolves will find a tremendous number
of books on this subject. Wolves: Behavior,Ecology and Conservation is not for those
seeking a "Disney" like rendition of this animal. Those seeking a mystical, science
fictional portrayal of this mammal would be advised to look elsewhere. For those seeking
the facts about this animal, this volume is likely the most definitive compilation
of scientific research available on the subject. Documenting the work of the world's foremost
experts on this subject, the authors and editors have combined several hundred years of
scientific research and, in my opinion, presented observations while maintaining the highest
degree of scientific objectivity possible. This book in no way reads like a novel, and those seeking to confirm a preconceived outright protectionist or complete anihilation philosophy, would best be served looking elsewhere. Given the highly controversial public image associated with this mammal,
great progress could likely be made in the management of this species if more individuals
with an interest in this subject would read this definitive work.

Product Description
This text presents a critical survey of the burgeoning field of political ecology, an interdisciplinary area of research which connects politics and economy to problems of environmental control and ecological change. Written to be accessible to students at all levels and from different disciplines, it provides an entertaining and rigorous synthesis of the achievements and shortcomings of the field to date.

The book is divided into four sections: the history and emergence of political ecology over the last century; the conceptual and methodological challenges facing political ecologists; the major questions that political ecology has addressed and, to varying degrees, answered; and the major challenges that face the field now and for the future. Throughout, the author uses case examples to explore abstract, theoretical issues in a down-to-earth way. He also draws on real life details from his own experience, in order to offer a personal glimpse into political ecology research. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Read on Robbins
Not a bad text for advanced environmental studies students. The layperson outside of the classroom may have some difficulty identifying the underlying structure, and deeper meaning of political ecology, which I find to be a radical de-constructionist perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "A" standard
Robbins has provided the new standard for political ecology texts, at least in geography, although this book is far different from a mundane "textbook."He summarizes both the thrust of what political ecology, what political ecologists do, and the shifting ground beneath our feet as we all struggle to understand and explain human-environment relationships in a political and economically complex world. Some readers and reviewers have fairly pointed out that the volume is too accommodating to perspectives that traditionally clash, or don't mesh very well, to the point of neglecting important differences in how political ecologists conduct research and how they frame it in a particular body of ideas.
I am not sure how some of the authors of past works in cultural, human and political ecology (or anthropology) would view Robbins' interpretation of their work, either in the time-line diagrams of how the sub-discipline has evolved or in the sense of being lumped with other practitioners with whom they shared little in common.
So, while the book is exceptional, the volume can be critiqued for being a bit too inclusive: Robbins has tried to build a tent large enough to house all of the bickering schools, personalities and research approaches...that rarely agree to enter the same tent. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good BUGS cookbook
I recently used this book for a class, and found it a good introduction for those already well familiar with classical frequentist techniques in ecology. It provides good cookbook recipes for doing an ANOVA, regression, etc with BUGS. The first chapter also cites some good reasons as to WHY one should use Bayes when they have prior information over other techniques. This was NOT however, a book that was particularly useful for those who want a thorough introduction to Bayes, warts and all, as well as giving one a real thorough understanding of Hierarchical modeling, which is arguably where Bayes can see it's best applications, particularly in ecology. The class as a whole felt like the book needs more thorough examples, more explanations of the WHYs, as well as the potential pitfalls, how to find problems with your models, as well as some applied problem sets. We also used Gelman and Hill's book, which has been excellent as a more thorough introduction, even if it is in the social sciences, and I have high hopes for James Clark's new book, although I have not seen a copy yet. ... Product Description
As humanity presses down inexorably on the natural world, people debate the extent to which we can save the Earth's millions of different species without sacrificing human economic welfare. But is this argument wise? Must the human and natural worlds be adversaries? In this book, ecologist Michael Rosenzweig finds that ecological science actually rejects such polarization. Instead it suggests that, to be successful, conservation must discover how we can blend a rich natural world into the world of economic activity. This revolutionary, common ground between development and conservation is called reconciliation ecology: creating and maintaining species-friendly habitats in the very places where people live, work, or play. The book offers many inspiring examples of the good results already achieved. The Nature Conservancy, for instance, has a cooperative agreement with the Department of Defense, with more than 200 conservation projects taking place on more than 170 bases in 41 states. In places such as Elgin Air Force Base, the human uses-testing munitions, profitable timbering and recreation--continue, but populations of several threatened species on the base, such as the long-leaf pine and the red-cockaded woodpecker, have been greatly improved. The Safe Harbor strategy of the Fish & Wildlife Service encourages private landowners to improve their property for endangered species, thus overcoming the unintended negative aspects of the Endangered Species Act. And Golden Gate Park, which began as a system of sand dunes, has become, through human effort, a world of ponds and shrubs, waterfowl and trees.Rosenzweig shows that reconciliation ecology is the missing tool of conservation, the practical, scientifically based approach that, when added to the rest, will solve the problem of preserving Earth's species. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Clarion Call For A New, Most Unique, Approach to Saving Earth's Biodiversity
One of our most brilliant, thoughtful, and persuasive, ecologists, Michael Rosenzweig has looked at virtually every major facet of ecology over an illustrative career spanning more than four decades, focusing primarily on evolutionary, population and community ecology. This tremendous range, from studying continent-wide species diversity patterns to understanding community ecology in the surrounding Sonoran (Arizona) desert, and finally, to interpreting major aspects of the fossil record from an ecological perspective, has led to the development of important, often novel, insights not only in ecology, but indeed, for much of evolutionary biology. For example, in the early 1970s, independently of evolutionary biologist Leigh Van Valen (who would coin the term), Rosenzweig stumbled upon the Red Queen's Hypothesis. In his latest book, "Win-Win Ecology", Rosenzweig is a most infectious optimist, arguing persuasively for a new kind of conservation ecology, reconciliation ecology, that, by striving to strike a balance between humanity's demographic and economic pressures and the desire to save as much of Earth's biodiversity as possible, may become ultimately, the best - if not the sole - means of saving this biodiversity.

Rosenzweig passionately believes it is possible for humanity to live in harmony with nature. Moreover, he offers elegant proof that it is being done now, beginning with a most memorable vignette; discovering an "undersea" restaurant at the Israeli Red Sea port of Eilat, whose adjacent reef has been constructed, offering a new refuge to the port's exceedingly rich coral reef biodiversity. Other memorable tales include the inadvertent construction of sanctuaries for native frogs in southern Arixona courtesy of cattle ranchers, for crocodiles at a Florida power plant, and for a pine forest at a United States Air Force weapons testing range. For Rosenzweig, these, and other notable examples he cites, demonstrate how the science of reconciliation ecology would work; a new form of conservation ecology in which mankind would construct new, artificial habitats to preserve some, if not all, an area's existing biodiversity. Most conservation biology efforts, Rosenzweig notes, fall under reservation ecology: "save the Earth's habitats", with increasing attention also drawn to restoration ecology: restoring some territory back to a more natural status. But he believes both are ultimately doomed to fail if they are the only means of preserving Earth's biodiversity. For both purely esthetic and selfish economic reasons like ecotourism, Rosenzweig believes that reconciliation ecology may prove to be more effective than reservation ecology and restoration ecology (But he also recognizes that we shouldn't throw out the baby with the bath water; that both reservation ecology and restoration ecology will still have ample importance in preserving our planet's still rich biodiversity.).

Most of the latter half of "Win-Win Ecology" is devoted to the science behind the species-area relationship, which, ecologically astute readers may recognize, led eventually to the development of the theory of equilibrium island biogeography back in the mid 1960s by Rosenzweig's doctoral dissertation advisor, ecologist Robert MacArthur and systematist and biogeographer Edward O. Wilson. Here Rosenzweig offers persuasive mathematical reasoning demonstrating as to why reservation ecology is insufficient towards preserving our planet's biodiversity. The mathematics he employs is simple, quite lucid, and should be easily understandable to anyone with a good foundation in arithmetic. He also reminds us that extinction is the ultimate fate of all species; a point stated with utmost eloquence by his late colleague, eminent vertebrate paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson, who noted that our planet is a "charnel house of species".And he stresses this point by referring to some of the great mass extinctions known in the past five hundred fifty-odd million years of Earth's biological history, most notably the terminal Permian mass extinction from approximately two hundred forty million years ago, where upwards of 97% of known species became extinct.

Rosenzweig hasn't offered us the golden elixir of truth that will solve our ongoing crisis in protecting and preserving much of Earth's biodiversity. But he has offered a most fascinating solution to our problem, and one that's well-reasoned, and well-stated in clear, extremely lucid, prose. Without question, "Win - Win Ecology" demands a wider readership, especially amongst the scientifically literate audience - and the general public - for whom this book ought to be required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration amidst depression.
This book inspires you to look at your surroundings and make changes that improve the welfare of the living world around you. However, it states the cold equations of our increasing destruction, and explains what the future is likely to bring if we don't immediately start working for a better world.

Plants and animals used to be able to move to new habitats during periods of climate change -- today we've locked them into too-small reserves and they have nowhere to go except extinct during the current warming trend. That's why we must work hard at making our cities (where most of us live) as hospitable as possible for other living creatures. ... Read more

Product Description
This book explores the links among ecology, disease, and international politics in the context of the Greater Caribbean - the landscapes lying between Surinam and the Chesapeake - in the seventeenth through early twentieth centuries. Ecological changes made these landscapes especially suitable for the vector mosquitoes of yellow fever and malaria, and these diseases wrought systematic havoc among armies and would-be settlers. Because yellow fever confers immunity on survivors of the disease, and because malaria confers resistance, these diseases played partisan roles in the struggles for empire and revolution, attacking some populations more severely than others. In particular, yellow fever and malaria attacked newcomers to the region, which helped keep the Spanish Empire Spanish in the face of predatory rivals in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.In the late eighteenth and through the nineteenth century, these diseases helped revolutions to succeed by decimating forces sent out from Europe to prevent them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Authoritative and engaging
J. R. McNeill gained my confidence immediately with a first chapter displaying a proper balance of confidence and humility about his thesis: roughly, that ecological changes created by Europeans in the Atlantic coastal regions of the New World increased the prevalence of malaria and yellow fever--which in turn helped to determine the outcome of later military conflicts in the region.McNeill is the master of his extensive research, yet he writes simply and clearly.Few books these days are both academically sound and easily approachable by the general reader.Bravo!May McNeill's tribe increase.

I have taught courses on imperialism for decades and regret that John McNeill's latest masterpiece was not available earlier. Product Description
This extensively revised new edition of Wildlife Ecology, Conservation, and Management provides a succinct and clear introduction to general ecological principles, and then goes on to show how those principles can be applied to wildlife management and conservation.

The unique feature of this book is that general ecology is explained first, allowing those students who do not have an ecology background to get to grips quickly with applications to real world situations. This said, the book is appropriate to both undergraduate and graduate classes in applied ecology, conservation, and natural resource management. The book will also be valuable to professional wildlife biologists in developing their research and management.

This edition includes new chapters on foraging and on community and ecosystem ecology. Recent developments in the use of computer modelling are explored in several of the chapters and an overview of how to choose between different models is provided in a separate new chapter. An accompanying CD with worked examples allows students to develop skills in computer modelling and practical problem solving. ... Read more

This book was in great condition and arrived on time as stated. It was less expensive than the texts available at the University, a great deal!

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you studying at the graduate and undergraduate level in the area of wildlife management and conservation? If you are, this book is for you! Authors Anthony R. E. Sinclair, John M. Fryxell and Graeme Caughley, have written an outstanding 2nd edition of a book about how conservation has become an increasingly important component in the management of animal populations and their habitats.

Sinclair, Fryxell and Caughley, begin with an explanation about what wildlife management is, how it relates to conservation, and how it should operate. Then, they provide a brief overview of the main ecological divisions in the world and supply a background of natural history. The authors continue by outlining the mechanisms by which the evolutionary process of speciation , convergence, and radiation come about. In addition, they also discuss food and nutrition. The authors also consider how ecological constraints shape the behavior of individual organisms and, conversely, the effect of individual behavior on the dynamics of populations and communities. Then, the authors deal with the internal workings of a population that result in a change of population size. Next, they explore some of the reasons why populations are found where they are. Then, the authors describe the theory and evidence for the stability of populations through regulations. Next, they review the competition and facilitation between species. The authors continue by describing the behavior of predators with respect to prey. They also introduce parasitism and disease within wildlife populations. In addition, they also explore those things an animal needs to eat to survive and reproduce resources. Next, they deal with the counting of animals. Then, the authors explore age and stage structures. Next, they explore the methods for choosing between such alternative models or hypotheses. The authors continue by explaining how a technical judgment can be evaluated, by posing it as a question. They also deal with theory that has been developed to account for why and how populations become extinct. In addition, they review actual extinctions or near extinctions to show what are the commonest causes of extinction in practice. Next, the authors consider how to estimate an appropriate offtake for a wildlife population. Then, they show you how a control operation is similar to a sustained-yield exercise but is conceptually more complex. Finally, the authors put the various aspects that they have discussed throughout the rest of the book into the context of the ecosystem to show how these are pertinent to management and conservation.

The authors have also provided a CD that illustrates in close detail how to calculate most of the mathematical concepts discussed in this most excellent book, including all of the simulation models. To further the development of problem-solving skills, the authors also included a series of computer labs, touching on several key concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text
This is a most excellent book. Aimed at the intermediate to advanced student Sinclair et al.'s book covers an enormous amount of ground with detail and grace.The authors manage to pull the best out of the lessons that wildlife ecology, conservation biology, and habitat management should have taught us over the past 30 years, and present the results in clear insightful prose.While this book is not for the faint of heart -it does NOT scrimp on mathematical modelling- the examples presented are straight and to the point, and running it by a small seminar of (admittedly clever) undergrads I found them well able to keep up with what was going on.What I really like aboutWECAM (excuse the abbreviation) is the real attempt to integrate the three often all-too-disconnected "disciplines" of the title.Throughout one gets the sense that these folks are professionals who have been out in the field AND ALSO in front of the computer and are presenting stuff that has really worked for them. Beyond the text itself there is a useful glossary of terminology plus an exhaustive Lit. Cited that is worth the price of admission by itself. -oh yeah, speaking of price.this book is significantly cheaper than other texts in the field, has a CD with working examples of the models attached, and even in paperback is well constructed & won't fall apart in student backpacks when you tell 'em to "bring the book" on overnight field trips.Most Excellent! ...
