Product Description
Synergetic Press is proud to announce the long-awaited release of GEOCHEMISTRY AND THE BIOSPHERE, a meticulously edited, reader accessible, first English translation of the Russian essays by Vladimir I. Vernadsky (1863-1945). Vernadsky is the highly venerated father of several geo-based disciplines, including geochemistry, biogeochemistry, and radiogeology. He wrote the first scientific theory about thebiosphere, the life zone of the Earth, and in the process laid the groundwork for planetary thinking. A recognized catalyst, this premier scientific work addresses in detail humanity s impact on the living systems of the planet. GEOCHEMISTRY AND THE BIOSPHERE contains his groundbreaking work on the biosphere and the noösphere, as well as his seminal work on geochemistry.Says Deborah Snyder, Chief Executive of Synergetic Press:The publication of these essays, written over sixty years ago, comes at an auspicious time. We have reached a point on our planet when serious debate on what to do about global warming can no longer be postponed an understanding of Vernadsky s work on the biosphere and noösphere is absolutely central to such conversations. It is our hope that bringing Vernadsky s ecological vision to the English speaking world will help deepen our understanding of planetary processes and enable us to become better stewards of our planet. Vernadsky maintains that the biosphere is a thin strata, a separategeological envelope, inhabited by living matter, the force of which exerts changes in its physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. Moreover, this envelope is permeated by cosmic energy, which works even greater changes. Thus the biosphere, the stage on which changes are played out, will evolve over time. According to Vernadsky, from the biosphere a noösphere -- a biosphere influenced by the activity of the human mind -- will ultimately emerge. Vernadsky writes,Mankind s power is connected not with its matter but with its brain, its thoughts and its works, guided by its mind. In the geological history of the biosphere, a great future is opened to Man if he realizes it and does not direct his mind and work to self-destruction. Snyder adds:Vernadsky was very much ahead of his time. Had his work been more widely translated, his name would be to biospherics what Einstein s is to relativity or Darwin s to evolution. In Russia there are stamps, coins, streets, monuments, museums, libraries, mountain ranges, and more that bear his name or portrait. Throughout the world there are foundations and scholarships named after him. This release in English of his most important work is a significant contribution to Earth sciences. In addition to profound insights into connections between organisms and their environment, GEOCHEMISTRY AND THE BIOSPHERE provides rare glimpses into a highly original scientific mind able to integrate knowledge of mineralogy, biochemistry, geochemistry, crystallography, soil science, and the history of science. The scope of his genius alone makes Vernadsky essential reading for scientists, academics, students, and general readers interested in understanding the present and future role of humans on the Earth. ... Product Description
This book shows how geochemical data aids in the finding of hydrocarbons by following consistent rules of interpretation. It is a review of the techniques used in interpretation of data and will be an essential manual for all those in the field of petroleum exploration. Based on lecture notes used by Brian Cooper when giving courses to petroleum geologists, geophysicists and trainee geochemists over the last 15 years, this book is also the distillation of the experience gained in attempting more than 100 basin evaluations and the interpretation of several thousand well sections. Many aspects of petroleum geochemistry have changed over this period of time, due mainly to the introduction of increasingly sophisticated analytical techniques and the wealth of data which they have produced. Concepts have evolved or been abandoned, new concepts have been introduced. This book shows how petroleum geochemistry can be used routinely and with consistency in exploration. ... Read more

Product Description
The oceans are vitally important to an understanding of how the Earth works as an integrated system because its chemical composition records transfer of elements through the Earth's geochemical reservoirs as well as defining how physical, biological and chemical processes combine to influence issues as diverse as climate change and the capacity of the oceans to remove toxic metals. Much modern marine geochemistry aims to link and integrate studies of the modern oceans with work using proxies to define how ocean chemistry and the ocean/atmospheric system has changed through time on a number of different timescales. Special focus in such work is the carbon cycle and its link to changes in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Volume 6 covers all the important topics needed for such an integrated approach, ranging from the contemporary ocean composition, transport processes in the ocean, paleoclimatology and paleo-oceanography from marine deposits, to the evolution of seawater composition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best in Their Field
The authors, two of the best-known men in their field, have surveyed the whole of the broad science of geochemistry and have brought together much of our present knowledge of the subject. The book is divided into two parts. Part I treats the general aspects of geochemistry. It deals with: the chemistry of meteorites; the abundance of elements and nuclides; the geochemical structure and evolution of the Earth; the geochemistry of the geospheres (lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere) and the distribution of elements therein; and the principal aspects of chemistry of the Universe, i.e., cosmochemistry. Part II contains a detailed discussion of the manner of occurrence of the elements. The Periodic Table is discussed, element by element, and the following features are individually discussed for each element: its manner of occurrence in meteorites and in the geochemical spheres of the Earth; its general geochemical character; its manner of occurrence in minerals; its course during magmatic crystallization; its role in cycles of weathering and metamorphism; its abundance in meteorites and in the rocks of the uppermost lithosphere, and its concentration in deposits of economic importance. The volume also contains a number of appendixes-among them, a table which provides the atomic and ionic radii of the elements, and tables of gravimetric conversion factors for the elements and their geochemically important compounds. A bibliography with more than seven hundred entries is included, with emphasis on special papers, as an aid for the research worker. Throughout the authors have emphasized the quantitative aspects in geochemistry and have attempted to synthesize and summarize new geochemical ideas. The book is written primarily for the use of geologists and chemists who are interested in the chemical aspects of our planet. It is also of fundamental importance to the practical and applied phases of the geological sciences, such as economic geology and prospecting.

    Product Description
This work is based on the observation that further major advances in geochemistry, particularly in understanding the rules that govern the ways in which elements come together to form minerals and rocks, will require the application of the theories of quantum mechanics. The book therefore outlines this theoretical background and discusses the models used to describe bonding in geochemical systems. It is the first book to describe and critically review the application of quantum mechanical theories to minerals and geochemical systems. The book consolidates valuable findings from chemistry and materials science as well as mineralogy and geochemistry, and the presentation has relevance to professionals in a wide range of disciplines. Experimental techniques are surveyed, but the emphasis is on applying theoretical tools to various groups of minerals: the oxides, silicates, carbonates, borates, and sulfides.Other topics dealt with in depth include structure, stereochemistry, bond strengths and stabilities of minerals, various physical properties, and the overall geochemical distribution of the elements. ...
