The integration of community concerns with GIS technologies has had the effect of bringing community planners and designers together at the planning table. Planners no longer plan for the people in the communities, they plan with them. With planning support software, citizen planners can move buildings from block to block, tear them down, build complete subdivisions, run new highways in and around town, analyze any number of scenarios, and see with their own eyes the consequences of each action. This reference offers new possibilities and discusses the most important aspects of computer-aided land-use planning. Topics covered include urban modeling, simulation and scenario construction, collaborative planning, and visualization. ... Read more

Product Description
This valuable reference book is unique in its coverage of examples from the geological sciences, many centred on applications to mineral exploration. The underlying principles of GIS are stressed and emphasis placed on the analysis and modelling of spatial data with applications to site selection and potential mapping. The book commences with a definition of GIS and describes a case study of mapping mineral potential. The ways in which spatial data are organized with models (raster, vector, relational) are discussed and data structures, such as quadtrees and topological structures are introduced. Data input including digitizing, geographic projections and conversions is covered together with output (visualization, representation of colour and spatial query). Spatial data transformations are dealt with thoroughly and attention is paid to map analysis and modelling as related to single maps, map pairs and multiple maps respectively. Methods of quantifying the associations between pairs of maps are emphasized. Finally, examples of landfill site selection and mineral potential mapping illustrate the application of map algebra for combining maps and tables with models, employing Boolean logic, index weighting, fuzzy logic and probability methods such as weights of evidence. There is an extensive glossary of terms, and references accompany each chapter. Contains 40 pages of colour illustrations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview
"Geographic Information Systems in Ecology" provides a good overview of basic geographic concepts that ecologists use to analyze spatial patterns.Johnston starts out with basic GIS concepts, then movesto linear, topographic, temporal, and spatial interpolation techniques, andthen wraps up with GPS concepts and basic modeling.

This is not acookbook or how-to manual, but rather much more.Johnston's emphasis onthe fundamentals holds up well, given the rapid speed with which this fieldis evolving.I expect that this will be an equally valuable reference 10years from now. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars GIS design and implementation
The book is overpriced. The content needs to be edited and all the spelling mistakes corrected. I learned more from free content on internet sites than from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, bad writing
Based on content and organization, it's good, maybe really good. But the poor writing makes it hard to read. It's also kind of expensive.

I was new to GIS design and implementation, so I can't compare this to what else is out there on these topics.I do have some experience with databases and GIS software, so I'm not that green to the concepts.I'm a thorough reader and like for reading to flow, especially when it's explaining something techy. This book has many punctuation errors (e.g. a period where a comma should be), uses the wrong word (e.g. their for there, or where for were), uses the wrong form of the verb "is", uses plural where it's really singular, etc.Sometimes a sentence is just worded in a way that makes it difficult to follow.

I have learned a lot about design and implementation of GIS with this book.I just wish it would have been less taxing to get through. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars good for project ideas but wouldn't recommend
This book is good for general park-related GIS project ideas but it lacks any real/useful content. Just reading the titles at the top of each page gives you the gist of the whole book. The images are basically useless. There are random images thrown in just to take up space and any GIS-related images are too small for interpretation. Basically, all of the images are useless. If you have to get this book, buy a cheap used copy (mine was like $5).

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is power, but geographic knowledgeshows the way
This beautiful and intense book, stuffed with full-color maps in many formats, is not just for national park managers, those of us who are map addicts, and tech-types attracted to anything computer-based.Anyone who loves the outdoors, uses natural resources, or ponders wildlife biosystems will see how geographic information systems (GIS) have -- and will even more -- shape the future of our national park system.Although not for the purely casual reader, Mapping the Future illustrates so well the surprisingly diverse GIS applications already used in many of our parks... from snow-removal in Glacier Park to wildfire management in Southern California. The National Park Service plans extensive GIS information access for use by the general public. This book is a step towards understanding the amazing data available to all of us. ... Product Description
Time has always been a fascinating dimension of human existence. It is also an aspect in the field of geographic information science that today is getting more attention than ever before. Although the concept of storing unique attribute information linked to objects within a GIS is fundamental, adding the time element raises some intriguing questions and presents new difficulties. Time adds process to pattern and the inclusion of temporal aspects within a GIS opens new perspectives. It is definitely one of the most exciting prospects that lies ahead in this field.

The book deals with the integration of temporal information in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The main purpose of a temporal or time-integrative GIS is to reproduce spatio-temporal processes or sequences of events of the realworld in a model in such a way as to make them accessible for spatial query, analysis and visualisation. The volume reflects theoretical thoughts on the interrelations of space and time and includes practical examples taken from various fields of application (spatial/environmental analysis, demographics, history, business data warehousing). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and thorough
Having been a student with Harvey Miller probably makes my review somewhat biased. Nevertheless, this is an excellent book if you're a student or professional in the field of GIS and need to know how GIS can be applied in transportation, or vice versa, knowing tranportation, this book will tell you what GIS can do for you. Mind you, this is not for the fainthearted, this is solid academic work and presumes some academic knowlegde prior to reading this book. It is specked with references that are hard to get, and you are likely to spend more time in the library reading up on the bibliography than digesting the actual text. Still, if GIS-T is your line of research, you cannot avoid having this book. It is by far one of the most comprehensive I have seen. It is clear that the authors posess solid knowledge and have covered a wide field and left nothing out. It may have a rather inhibitive price; in hindsight it was well worth the money spent. ... Product Description
Geographic information systems have developed rapidly in thepast decade, and are now a major class of software, with applicationsthat include infrastructure maintenance, resource management, agriculture, Earth science, and planning. But a lack of standards hasled to a general inability for one GIS to interoperate with another. It is difficult for one GIS to share data with another, or for peopletrained on one system to adapt easily to the commands and userinterface of another. Failure to interoperate is a problem at manylevels, ranging from the purely technical to the semantic and theinstitutional. Interoperating Geographic Information Systems is about effortsto improve the ability of GISs to interoperate, and has been assembledthrough a collaboration between academic researchers and the softwarevendor community under the auspices of the US National Center forGeographic Information and Analysis and the Open GIS Consortium Inc.It includes chapters on the basic principles and the variousconceptual frameworks that the research community has developed tothink about the problem. Other chapters review a wide range ofapplications and the experiences of the authors in trying to achieveinteroperability at a practical level. Interoperability opens enormouspotential for new ways of using GIS and new mechanisms for exchangingdata, and these are covered in chapters on information marketplaces, with special reference to geographic information. Institutionalarrangements are also likely to be profoundly affected by the trendtowards interoperable systems, and nowhere is the impact ofinteroperability more likely to cause fundamental change than ineducation, as educators address the needs of a new generation of GISusers with access to a new generation of tools. The book concludeswith a series of chapters on education and institutional change. Interoperating Geographic Information Systems is suitable as asecondary text for graduate level courses in computer science, geography, spatial databases, and interoperability and as a referencefor researchers and practitioners in industry, commerce andgovernment. ...
