5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction
Applied geophysics is inherently a mixture of first physics and math with geology (hence the 'applied'). This text introduces the geophysics from a relatively basic toolset of both math and physics. As appropriate for most college texts, this book does assume some basic understanding of geometry and calculus, but the derivations are straightforward with excellent examples both in figures and in the included cd.

This text is extremely readable and useful for obtaining a basic understanding of the majority of applied geophysical techniques used today. Even so, some methods such as magnetotellurics and induced polarization are given only a passing glance in the attempt at truly keeping this text an "introduction".

While maybe not the answer to all applied geophysical questions, overall this text is excellent. Without the math (and thus the physics), geophysics is powerless.

I used this text in a senior-level applied geophysics course and have since moved on to graduate school. I return to Burger's book when I need a simple refresher of the basic equations and principles while leaning on Telford's Applied Geophysics for the more serious questions. Milsom's Field Geophysics (Geological Field Guide) is another great introductory pocket-sized text for refreshers both in the field and when cracking out a problem set.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent....
very fast shipping (faster then expected - few days).... definitely will buy more books from the seller...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Book
I used this book in my applied geophysics course and it is by far the best written textbook I've ever read. The author is clear, concise, and explains things beautifully. It reads like he's talking to you, and the mathematical derivations of the equations are very easy to follow.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a solid introductory textbook in applied geophysics. It's a bit of a math-based text, but it is also great at explaining the concepts behind the methods with simple diagrams and well-phrased explanations.

PS - it comes with a CD-ROM of great resources (very basic software programs and some spreadsheets) to help you understand the data processing that is done with each method.

1-0 out of 5 stars good for a math major
This book has to much math theory not enough practical field geophysics or walk through problems for geology of geophysics folks in the field. If you want to give your students a math test in geophysics this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Applied Geophysics
This is a great starter book for a Geophysics/Geology student. It incorporates the mathematics as well as the basic premisses needed for an understanding of a complex, developing and ever-changing science. It is to be used for my senior geophysics class and I have read the book to prepare for the class itself. Parts of this book could be used for advanced high school students although the derivation of equations would be beyond the scope of the vast majority of high school students. -Karl- ... Read more

Product Description
Completely revised and updated, this new edition of the popular and highly regarded textbook, Applied Geophysics, describes the physical methods involved in exploration for hydrocarbons and minerals. These tools include gravity, magnetic, seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, and radioactivity studies. All aspects of these methods are described, including theoretical considerations, data acquisition, and data processing and interpretation, with the objective of locating concentrations of natural resources and defining their extent. In the past fourteen years or so since the writing ofApplied Geophysics, there have been many changes in the field of exploration geophysics. The authors give full treatment to changes in this field, which include improved techniques for calculating gravity fields, the use of proton-precession and optically-pumped magnetometers, improved quality of seismic data, magnetotelluric as a practical exploration method, new electromagnetic exploration methods, the use of gamma-ray spectrometers in radioactive exploration, and improved well-logging techniques. The intent is to be practical, and thus many actual examples and problems are given. Moreover, wherever possible in this edition the authors adopt the use of Système Internationale (SI) units, which were not in standared use at the time of the first edition. The reader needs only a general background knowledge of geology, physics, and mathematics. Most of the math can be skipped by those interested only in the results. Advanced mathematical concepts are explained in the appendix. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, average quality
The content of this book is beyond reproach - good, detailed solid technical info. That's why I bought it. It's a bit beyond me as a geologist but I won't outgrow its content and that suits me fine. I was disappointed by the publication quality though. I knew it was a paperback, but it seems a particularly flimsy paperboard, and for a book of this size and density, it really needs a hardback or a stiffer, tougher paperback cover. This is a working book which might end up in a field camp, and for US$70, I would appreciate a hardback. More importantly, the text quality is poor, as are the photos. I compared it to the original (which our office has a copy of) and it seems they have scanned the original publication and digitally printed it. The text has an annoying blur, just like photocopies, and the images (never the best in the original) are furthur degraded and contrasty.
A for content, C for effort. B overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE IN A MILLION
I first came across Telford during my Postgraduate days in Nigeria. It's has been my second bible ever since. It's a classical book in Applied Geophysics. It has no rival. I would encourage geophysicists world-wide tohave a second look at the book, especially, professionals, postgraduate andundergraduate students. 1-0 out of 5 stars Service/delivery problem
The content of the book is very good. My main concern is the service, I received the book in bad shape although I ordered a "NEW" and NOT "USED" book. I think this is not a product issue but a service issue. Next time I will be careful not to buy from this seller.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for early undergraduates
This was a required textbook for one of my first undergraduate courses in geophysics, and it was incredibly exciting to read.It brought a lot of things together for me, so that I finally understood the linkages between all the things we were learning about.A classic in the field. Most of my PhD colleagues have this on their shelf and refer to it with affection.

5-0 out of 5 stars textbook
I am currently taking a geophysics course and this book is a required textbook. I am finding this book to be helpful but hard to understand at times. Though it is an excelent resource for geophysics students.

Product Description
Paleoclimatology is a review of the history of the Earth's climate from the time of its formation four-and-a-half billion years ago to the present. The field, according to John Imbrie, a leading paleontologist at Brown University, is "ripe for synthesis," with broad implications in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, oceanography, and the atmospheric sciences. This book addresses several topics rarely discussed in paleoclimate summaries, including the modeling of Paleozoic climates and the environmental consequences of asteroid impacts. In addition, the book identifies areas for future research and offers a frame of reference for interpreting the likely consequences of greenhouse warming.A new chapter has been added updating the information since 1991. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I wish I would have had this book six years ago when I started performing geophysical field work. This book covers everything that you would possibly need to think of when doing small scale geophysical surveys. I have purchased copies of this book for all of the new geophysicists that I work with so they won't make the same mistakes that I did. I read the entire book and highlighted the best sugestions and dog eared a lot of pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Update for middle age professionals
This book is a chance to update new advances, technics, and methods in geophysics. I rather think this is focused for professionals (on Geology or Geophysics) who have been dealing with a specific area for some years and need to know about the state of the art on Geophysical methods. New developments in GPR, Gravimetry, Magnetometry, Seismic and Electrical exploration is a pretty good chance to take an updated overview on Geophysics.
I recommend such issue as an overview of modern Geophysics, it is not necessary to get involved in hard math develops to understand the goal of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very pratical guide...
John thinks of every eventuality in the field, and especially recommends a very natty rubber mac - I can just see him in it! This book covers every geophysical field technique useful for four or less people (which does NOT include remote sensing, as the person above seems not to recognise). It is written in the same dry, and sometimes faintly sarcastic vein, that anyone who knows him will recognise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Field Geophysics
This book covers almost all of the current geophysics topics. It gives a sometimes too brief description of the equipment. Reviews the theory and discusses field operations with many helpful hint to stay out of trouble. The book does not cover remote sensing or the metal detector which too manygeologists have written off as mearly a hobby ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Completely unreliable!!!!
I tried to use this book as an "updated" textbook for an introductory course on Physics of the Earth (second year geophysics major) I had to taught.Since my area of research is paleomagnetism and rock magnetism the name of William Lowrie was sort of a guarantee that the book would be good. However, in the middle of the term I had to switch back to the "great classics", namely Stacey's and Garland's books. There are several problems with this book, firstly most of the formulae are presented out of the blues without a comprehensive deduction. That is not the most serious problem though, I also found several mistakes in the 2000 edition (I do not know if further editions took care of these problems). Some of these mistakes are pretty serious. As an example:he states that the international formula for the gravity normal to the Earth's ellipsoid derives directly from MacCullah's formula. That is not correct since in MacCullah's formula the centrifugal term coming from Earth's rotation is not considered!!!!There are also lots of minor mistakes related to missing terms in several formulae and derivatives.I did not touch the chapters related to geomagnetism and rock magnetism but I gather they should be the best in the whole book (I really hope so!!!!) since that is precisely William Lowrie's field of research. However I would not recommend this book at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Let's be sincere
This book is what its title says "FUNDAMENTALS", Ithink it's a pre-basic book about Geophysics. There are other books better than this one, i.e. Telford's "Applied Geophysics" and Garland's"Introduction to Geophysics" (this is what Mr. Lowrie says). ... Read more

Geophysics is used in dealing with problems from academic to practical interest. Applications can include, an understanding of the structure of the Earth, resource exploration, environmental and construction concerns, as well as archaeology, palaeontology, law enforcement, and counter-terrorism. The nature of this science makes inaccessible to all but those with rigorous training in mathematics and physics. While there are a great many publications in geophysics at various levels, none has been directed towards those that have a professional need to know about the geophysical techniques or are simply curious. This book was written with that particular audience in mind. Although its fundamental focus is on archaeological applications, it is sufficiently broad to be useful as a reference to support other applications and is sufficiently self-contained to serve as an introductory text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction for non-scientists
This is an excellent book for non-scientists. I am not attempting to belittle archaeologists, but most haven't taken the math to understand geophysics at a fundamental level. They are most interested in applying geophysics as a tool to assist in their work for which this book will be an asset. I have also read the books by Gaffney and Clark which are good introductions. This book actually has some math in it, which is a good thing. The book grew out of the geophysics for non science majors that Witten taught at the University of Oklahoma which was a quite popular course. I recommend it for any archaeologist or non-scientist who is interested in geophysics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book has no application what-so-ever
If you would like a book that gives you a very vague overview of geophysical techniques, that doesn't explain how the physics is applied to the problem this is the book for you.It goes through various geophysical techniques but lacks the explaination that goes along with the technique.Very few equations for the application of the material, and when equations are introduced the author regrets to explain their meaning or how it applys to the situation. This book is terrible for the geophysicist student/professor but may be good for a person who is mathematically challenged and read about techniques but have no clue how to apply them to real world situations.Would have given this book 0 stars if it was an option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good general overview
This book is the best overview of near surface geophysics that is currenty available. It is very light on theory, but is excellent for a first course in near surface geophysics or for a non-geophysicist who would like to expand their knowledge. I have read the book cover to cover over the last year as well as rereading some relevant chapters. There are some errors in the few derivations that are actually in the book. I have purchased six copies for co-workers who do not have geophysics degrees but work in the field. If you would like a deeper, more theoretical background get a copy of Applied Geophysics by Telford. With those two books you will be well grounded in near surface geophysics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Geophysics textbook written for humans to understand
My friend is doing her Masters in Geoscience. She recommended I buy this textbook. She had bought and read the 3 textbooks recommended for her Geophysics subject and couldn't understand any of them. She couldn't even understand the lecture notes and was starting to despair.

Then another friend recommended she read this book. As she started reading, she found herself saying: "Now why didn't the other textbooks just say that! Why did they have to make things so difficult and complicated?"

You don't need any prior knowledge of Geophysics to understand this textbook. You don't even need a science background. (I sure didn't have one!) It doesn't use big scientific words. It is written in English for humans to understand.

If you want a stress-free way to pass Geophysics, even get a High Distinction, I cannot recommend this textbook highly enough.

Would you pay $90+ to guarantee you passed Geophysics? I did. (Thank you Sophie for recommending it!!! You were right!)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a thorough Geophysics book.
This book was written by a kind-hearted, decent, incredibly knowledgeable geologist. He is an asset to the Oregon State University geology department. That said, Bob Lillie's book is in terrible shape. The book itself seems like it was photocopied. It was supposed to be a hardback, and not only is it a paperback, but many of the images are so black from a poor printing job that the chapters are useless. As a book for a beginning college geophysics class aimed at the physics-challenged, this is excellently written. But make sure your book is of a good quality before deciding to keep it. I recommend you send the book back if the images are in black and white.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paperback
I just got the book today and have not opened it. Amazon says that they were shipping me a hardcover book and they sent me a paperback book. Still has the same stuff but people should know what they are getting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook
I am currently taking a geophysics class which requires this book and I am finding it to be very helpful. It explains the topics in great detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Geophysics
This book achieves exactly what its title says it is - an introduction to geophysics. It balances math and physics with geoscience interpretation such that you don't need to be an expert to learn the main concepts of geophysics. For a science textbook it is extremely easy and enjoyable reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Un libre excelente, an excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb application and explanation of chaos and fractals
Dr. Turcotte explains and applies fractals to a wide variety of geological and geophysical phenomena. The writing is accessible to any educated reader who is willing to follow the mathematics.I have found it veryuseful in applying fractals and chaos to my own fields of study.Thesecond edition is a great improvement over the first:it is much expandedand clearer and begins at a more basic level. The book conveys a lapidaryconcision of thought that is impressive even in a pure theoreticalscientist.Dr. Turcotte is to be congratulated in this importantcontribution, which is so very useful to scientists in other fields. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive book
This book is a very comprehensive book that introduces a student to all basic concepts in Atmospheric Sciences. Very well written and excellent for self study !

4-0 out of 5 stars For the student, not for casual reading
This book is definitely for a student of the atmosphere. I bought it for some personal research I'm doing but I'm not a science person so it's over my head. This is very technical writing but very complete and well written. The book needlessly slips into evolution-speak occasionally but that's common in the science world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book

Product Description
Many research problems in cryospheric science, such as global warming-induced permafrost degradation, require information about the subsurface, which can be imaged using geophysical methods. This book is a practical guide to the application of geophysical techniques in mountainous and polar terrain, where the harsh environment and nature of the subsurface pose particular challenges. It starts with an introduction to the main geophysical methods and then demonstrates their application in periglacial environments through various case studies - written by a team of international experts. The final part of the book presents a series of reference tables with typical values of geophysical parameters for periglacial environments. This handbook is a valuable resource for glaciologists, geomorphologists and geologists requiring an introduction to geophysical techniques, as well as for geophysicists lacking experience of planning and conducting field surveys in cold regions. ...
