4-0 out of 5 stars Applied Geophysics
This is a great starter book for a Geophysics/Geology student. It incorporates the mathematics as well as the basic premisses needed for an understanding of a complex, developing and ever-changing science. It is to be used for my senior geophysics class and I have read the book to prepare for the class itself. Parts of this book could be used for advanced high school students although the derivation of equations would be beyond the scope of the vast majority of high school students. -Karl-

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
There was way too much math in this book. Many formulas were derived, substuted, etc so that the ready neededa thorough understanding of calculus and trigonometry to fully appreciate and understand.I needed a more basic understanding and interpretation of the data for taking the ASBOG exam. The practice problems would have been helpful if the solutions were included, but they were not. ... Book Description
Completely revised and updated, this new edition of the popular and highly regarded textbook, Applied Geophysics, describes the physical methods involved in exploration for hydrocarbons and minerals. These tools include gravity, magnetic, seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, and radioactivity studies. All aspects of these methods are described, including theoretical considerations, data acquisition, and data processing and interpretation, with the objective of locating concentrations of natural resources and defining their extent. In the past fourteen years or so since the writing ofApplied Geophysics, there have been many changes in the field of exploration geophysics. The authors give full treatment to changes in this field, which include improved techniques for calculating gravity fields, the use of proton-precession and optically-pumped magnetometers, improved quality of seismic data, magnetotelluric as a practical exploration method, new electromagnetic exploration methods, the use of gamma-ray spectrometers in radioactive exploration, and improved well-logging techniques. The intent is to be practical, and thus many actual examples and problems are given. Moreover, wherever possible in this edition the authors adopt the use of Système Internationale (SI) units, which were not in standared use at the time of the first edition. The reader needs only a general background knowledge of geology, physics, and mathematics. Most of the math can be skipped by those interested only in the results. Advanced mathematical concepts are explained in the appendix. ... Read more

1. Introduction, pp. 1-3
2. Tectonics on a sphere: the geometry of plate tectonics, pp. 5-40.
3. Past plate motions, pp.43-94.
4. Seismology Measuring the interior, pp. 100-186.
5. Gravity, pp.193-230
6. Geochronology, pp. 193-230.
7. Heat, pp. 269-323.

10. The continental lithosphere, pp. 509-602.
11. Appendixes on used mathematics , units and functions, pp.615-654
12. Glossary, pp.655-666.
* Following the detail discussion from the point of mathematical derivation and attractively illustrated pictures on given above issues, solutions are given for pedagogical problems following each subsection. For example, two problem solutions under the Chapter 2 are given for calculation of relative motion at a plate boundary (see page 21) and calculating rotational vector (see Page 24).After the well-defined problems and provided easy-going solutions, finally 11 more questions are provided at the end of Chapter 1 (see pp.37).At the end of Chapter 1, 43 references are listed just for related issues of Plate Tectonics. The reference list includes a selection not from best-known Journals (e.g., Science and Nature) but also publications from past (1971) to present (2004).From the illustrated part of proposing book, it is a good evidence for what the suggested book is both friendly interactive and pedagogically well illustrated.
* The textbook is being used in number of Universities in courses to teach Solid Earth.Among those universities through the world are the following:
* Department of Earth Sciences, University of Southern California-USA

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid and readable update on the Earth
Reading Shawna Vogel's Naked Earth reawakened my interest in geophysics - it's a great read, and the best overview I've seen on both the huge changes in the field recently and the arguments that have occurred. My onlycriticism is that some diagrams would have helped a lot, but Vogel'swriting is clear enough to carry the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars An fascinating overview of the field of Geophysics
I knew virtually nothing about Geophysics before I read this book.Having just finished the last page just a few minutes ago, I can now say I know the basis for perhaps even an introductory course in Geophysics. From thisbook I learned that the Earth is a living "heat engine",carefully dispensing heat through "plumes", supercontinentalrifting and shifting, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal venting, and lotsmore really cool stuff happening below our feet. The Earth may also beconsidered a "dynamo", creating a magnetic field that reversesquite mysteriously every some million years.Vogel's comprehensiveoverview also makes the point that it is often not possible to attributeevents or features to a single cause, that not only is the Earth itself asystem of amazing interior, exterior and atmospheric exchanges, but it isalso part of the larger system of space...!It's a fun and easy to read,well-informed, well-researched and objective survey of the field ofGeophysics today.Journalism at its best.I thank Shawna Vogel for my newunderstanding of this planet and its mysterious and awesome workings.

4-0 out of 5 stars I liked this book a lot
As an explanation ofgeophysicsNaked Earth succeeds.Ms. Vogelbrings the history, theories, personalities, conflicts and politics of geophysical science in to focus. It allows those unfamiliar with the world of science to observe the give and take, the wars, the collaborations and the pure luck required in the advancement toward the truth. She shows how the merging of traditional geologic principals along with more recent theories and discoveries reveals a violent past and predicts a future of certain geologic and atmospheric upheaval. However, I must add that the last few pages of the final chapter Ms. Vogal reveals herself as a typical contemporary journalist.Ms. Vogel couldn't resist commenting on that theory that human activity could lead to climatic catastrophe due to global warming.I was enjoying the book immensely until she threw that one in.I know we've all become desensitized to blatant editorializing from the media, but in a book on geophysics? If you want an enjoyable read on geophysics in general and about some of the latest discoveries, theories and personalities in that field definitely read this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I wish I would have had this book six years ago when I started performing geophysical field work. This book covers everything that you would possibly need to think of when doing small scale geophysical surveys. I have purchased copies of this book for all of the new geophysicists that I work with so they won't make the same mistakes that I did. I read the entire book and highlighted the best sugestions and dog eared a lot of pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Update for middle age professionals
This book is a chance to update new advances, technics, and methods in geophysics. I rather think this is focused for professionals (on Geology or Geophysics) who have been dealing with a specific area for some years and need to know about the state of the art on Geophysical methods. New developments in GPR, Gravimetry, Magnetometry, Seismic and Electrical exploration is a pretty good chance to take an updated overview on Geophysics.
I recommend such issue as an overview of modern Geophysics, it is not necessary to get involved in hard math develops to understand the goal of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very pratical guide...
John thinks of every eventuality in the field, and especially recommends a very natty rubber mac - I can just see him in it! This book covers every geophysical field technique useful for four or less people (which does NOT include remote sensing, as the person above seems not to recognise). It is written in the same dry, and sometimes faintly sarcastic vein, that anyone who knows him will recognise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Field Geophysics
This book covers almost all of the current geophysics topics. It gives a sometimes too brief description of the equipment. Reviews the theory and discusses field operations with many helpful hint to stay out of trouble. The book does not cover remote sensing or the metal detector which too manygeologists have written off as mearly a hobby ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Completely unreliable!!!!
I tried to use this book as an "updated" textbook for an introductory course on Physics of the Earth (second year geophysics major) I had to taught.Since my area of research is paleomagnetism and rock magnetism the name of William Lowrie was sort of a guarantee that the book would be good. However, in the middle of the term I had to switch back to the "great classics", namely Stacey's and Garland's books. There are several problems with this book, firstly most of the formulae are presented out of the blues without a comprehensive deduction. That is not the most serious problem though, I also found several mistakes in the 2000 edition (I do not know if further editions took care of these problems). Some of these mistakes are pretty serious. As an example:he states that the international formula for the gravity normal to the Earth's ellipsoid derives directly from MacCullah's formula. That is not correct since in MacCullah's formula the centrifugal term coming from Earth's rotation is not considered!!!!There are also lots of minor mistakes related to missing terms in several formulae and derivatives.I did not touch the chapters related to geomagnetism and rock magnetism but I gather they should be the best in the whole book (I really hope so!!!!) since that is precisely William Lowrie's field of research. However I would not recommend this book at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Let's be sincere
This book is what its title says "FUNDAMENTALS", Ithink it's a pre-basic book about Geophysics. There are other books better than this one, i.e. Telford's "Applied Geophysics" and Garland's"Introduction to Geophysics" (this is what Mr. Lowrie says). ... Read more

Book Description
Geophysics is a broad subject that encompasses not only the physics of the Earth, but also the physics of the atmosphere and oceans. The heart of geophysics, however, is the theory of the solid Earth. The Solid Earth is a general introduction to the study of modern physics of the solid Earth, including the workings of both the Earth's surface and its deep interior. The book begins with a brief historical introduction to developments in geophysics. The next chapter discusses the important theory of plate tectonics, and is followed logically by a chapter on geomagnetism and palaeomagnetism. Subsequent chapters deal with the subjects of seismology, gravity, radioactivity and the age of the Earth and heat flow in the Earth. The book concludes with chapters on the physics of the oceanic and continental lithospheres. The emphasis throughout the discussion is on basic physical principles rather than instrumentation or data handling. Many helpful worked examples are given in the text, and, in addition, there are problems of various degrees of difficulty at the end of each chapter. Appendices explain more advanced mathematical topics and theories of seismology for mathematically inclined students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Text - Physics Oriented
This is indeed a fine text.I think it is easier to read and work through if one has a strong background in physics (vs. geology) as the methodology is quite similar to the standard approach in physics, i.e. make a conjecture based on some physical intuition, attempt to derive relevant equations from basic principles, and then apply those equations.Geology is typically more descriptive and slightly less rigorous so I would imagine someone approaching this text from a geology dominated background might have a harder time reading it than a person coming to geophysics from physics or math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Text
This is an outstanding text that is widely respected. Before I developed my own notes, I used it in my classes at the University of Oklahoma.Fowler is very clear in her explanations and coverage. The first reviewhere reads like a disgruntled student and does this fine book a disservice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read, lacks examples

This book is overly concerned withderivation and not concerned enough with clear, easy to followexplanations. ... Read more

Book Description
An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics John M. Reynolds Reynolds Geo-Sciences Ltd, UK An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics represents the first introductory text to describe the developing field of environmental geophysics. A significant proportion of the material has never before been featured in a book of this type; particularly the case histories, some of which have never been published. The geographical basis of the case histories is worldwide, with examples originating from Australia to North America, Arctic Canada to the Antarctic, and from Europe to China. Some of the new material includes chapters on detailed survey design, Ground Penetrating Radar, electro-magnetic methods in environmental applications, electrical Sub-Surface Imaging (2-D tomography), Spectral Induced Polarisation, and high resolution engineering reflection seismology. The range of applications covered includes mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, but the greatest emphasis is on the use of geophysics in civil engineering, and in environmental and groundwater investigations. The level of mathematics and physics is deliberately kept to a minimum but is described qualitatively within the text. Relevant mathematical expressions are separated into boxes to supplement the text and the book is profusely illustrated with many figures and line drawings. Ideal for students wanting a broad introduction to the subject, the book is also designed for practising civil engineers, geologists, archaeologists and environmental scientists who need an overview of modern geophysical methods relevant to their discipline. This book is the first to provide such a comprehensive coverage of environmental geophysics. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book has no application what-so-ever
If you would like a book that gives you a very vague overview of geophysical techniques, that doesn't explain how the physics is applied to the problem this is the book for you.It goes through various geophysical techniques but lacks the explaination that goes along with the technique.Very few equations for the application of the material, and when equations are introduced the author regrets to explain their meaning or how it applys to the situation. This book is terrible for the geophysicist student/professor but may be good for a person who is mathematically challenged and read about techniques but have no clue how to apply them to real world situations.Would have given this book 0 stars if it was an option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good general overview
This book is the best overview of near surface geophysics that is currenty available. It is very light on theory, but is excellent for a first course in near surface geophysics or for a non-geophysicist who would like to expand their knowledge. I have read the book cover to cover over the last year as well as rereading some relevant chapters. There are some errors in the few derivations that are actually in the book. I have purchased six copies for co-workers who do not have geophysics degrees but work in the field. If you would like a deeper, more theoretical background get a copy of Applied Geophysics by Telford. With those two books you will be well grounded in near surface geophysics.

Product Description
The 3-D seismic method evolved as a natural outgrowth of 2-D seismic exploration. This reprint volume attempts to chronicle both the evolution and the state of the art of the 3-D seismic method. Papers selected for this volume sample the literature from the early 1970s through 1998. They were drawn primarily from Geophysics, Geophysical Prospecting, The Leading Edge, and First Break. From these journals and publications alone, more than 200 candidate articles were identified dealing with some aspect of 3-D seismic exploration. Our selection criteria included historical significance, tutorial value, novelty, theoretical importance, practicality, and cost-benefit analysis. The papers are arranged chronologically. The papers in this volume and their rich reference lists cover virtually all the relevant work on exploration 3-D through 1998. The chapter titles are: ""The Early Work,"" ""3-D Field Methods,"" ""3-D Processing Imaging,"" ""3-D Case Histories/Interpretation,"" ""Shallow 3-D Seismic Methods,"" and ""3-D Economics. ... Book Description
This book gives a comprehensive picture of the present stage of development of spectral analysis and filter theory in geophysics. The principles and theories behind classical and modern methods are described and the effectiveness of these methods is assessed; selected examples of their practical application in geophysics are discussed. The modern methods include, for example, spectral analysis by fitting random models to the data, the maximum-entropy and maximum-likelihood spectral analysis procedures, the Wiener and Kalman filters, homomorphic deconvolution, and adaptive procedures for non-stationary processes. This book represents a valuable aid in education and research and for solving practical problems in geophysics and related disciplines. ... Read more

Book Description
Geophysical techniques can map the underground conditions apart from boreholes. The use of these methods for hydrogeological applications is demonstrated for mapping of porous aquifers, mapping of structural aquifers, determintation of groundwater quality (mineralization), geophysical assessment of hydraulic properties, determination of aquifer vulnerability, and mapping of comtaminated sites. Additionally, a description of applied geophysical techniques used for groundwater studies is given including seismics, resistivity methods, magnetics, and ground penetrating radar. Even advanced techniques like NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) are presented. ... Read more

Book Description
Now in a greatly expanded second edition, this book relates fractals and chaos to a variety of geological and geophysical applications and introduces the fundamental concepts of fractal geometry and chaotic dynamics. In this new edition, Turcotte expands coverage of self-organized criticality and includes statistics and time series to provide a broad background for the reader. Topics include drainage networks and erosion, floods, earthquakes, mineral and petroleum resources, fragmentation, mantle convection, and magnetic field generation. The author introduces all concepts at the lowest possible level of mathematics consistent with their understanding, so that the reader requires only a background in basic physics and mathematics. He includes problems for the reader to solve. This book will appeal to a broad range of readers interested in complex natural phenomena. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Un libre excelente, an excellent book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb application and explanation of chaos and fractals
Dr. Turcotte explains and applies fractals to a wide variety of geological and geophysical phenomena. The writing is accessible to any educated reader who is willing to follow the mathematics.I have found it veryuseful in applying fractals and chaos to my own fields of study.Thesecond edition is a great improvement over the first:it is much expandedand clearer and begins at a more basic level. The book conveys a lapidaryconcision of thought that is impressive even in a pure theoreticalscientist.Dr. Turcotte is to be congratulated in this importantcontribution, which is so very useful to scientists in other fields. ...
