Description:
This study evaluated the relationship between diversity and activity-density of carabid beetles and invertebrate weed seed predation in conventional, no-till, and organic management systems in the Midwest USA. Carabid beetles were sampled with pitfall traps and invertebrate seed predation rates of fall panicum and common lambsquarters were assayed with exclosure cages. Total carabid activity-density was over two times higher in the conventional systems compared to the no-till and organic management systems. In contrast, activity-densities of seed-predating carabid species were over three times higher in the no-till compared to the conventional and organic systems. Carabid diversity was higher in the no-till and organic systems compared to the conventional system, and a multivariate analysis showed that carabid community structure was distinct among the three systems. Predation of fall panicum and common lambsquarters seeds was often over two times higher in the no-till compared to the conventional and organic systems, and there was a strong correlation (r>0.94) between seed removal rates and the total number of carabid seed predators captured in each system. ... Book Description
Until the 1980s, global increases in food production exceeded the concomitant growth of human populations. However, progressively agriculture is becoming unable to meet the world-wide per capita needs for food. Unless there is major international cooperation in addressing the problems associated with population control, it is predicted that the global human population will reach more than 14 billion by the year 2050, with provision of adequate food, fuel and space for such an increased population unachievable.

These problems are accentuated by factors such as world-wide reductions in soil fertility, the accelerating degradation of land that is suitable for food production through soil erosion, the world-wide trend for migration of human populations from rural habitats to cities and extremely rapid rates of global deforestation.

Possible solutions to global sustainability in agriculture and natural resources must involve an integration of ec ... Read more

Description:
Uncropped, cultivated field boundary strips have been advocated for conserving annual, arable plant communities. Field experiments were set up at three sites on light or chalky soils to test different sequences over a 3-year period of cultivation timing (September or March) and depth (deep or shallow), in replicated field margin plots. Four hypotheses were tested: (1) plant communities with a large component of annuals and dicotyledons are maintained over a 3-year period, (2) species whose germination period coincides with the timing of cultivation are favoured, (3) species with short- or long-lived seeds are favoured, respectively, by shallow or deep cultivation and (4) species composition is affected by the cultivations applied in both the current and previous year. The main components of the vegetation were annuals and dicotyledons. Monocotyledon cover increased from ca. 1-10% to 30% by year 3; the number of monocotyledon species also increased. Cover and number of perennial species increased at two sites. Annuals and dicotyledons showed varying trends between sites. The increase in monocotyledon species numbers was always greatest after shallow cultivations and perennials always increased irrespective of depth. Obligate autumn germinators tended to increase after September cultivations and spring germinators after March cultivations at two sites. A seedbank persistence index declined more after shallow than deep cultivations at two sites. Timing and depth of the most recent cultivation had the strongest effect on species composition. There was also a small residual effect of timing or depth from the previous cultivation. The strong plant community response to each cultivation episode will enable farmers to enhance spatial and temporal species diversity simply by varying the cultivation timing and depth between sites in a given year and over time at the same site. However, continued increase of monocotyledons and perennials over longer periods would be of concern and intervention might be necessary to control them. ... Read more

Book Description
This volume presents the proceedings of the 10th international symposium Humus et Planta held in Prague in August 19-23, 1991. The main topics of this book are devoted to the recent advances in fundamental, as well as applied research of humic substances, the most abundant of the naturally occuring macromolecules of nature, the understanding of their nature and how they react and interact in their natural environments. Texts are included on the structure, physical and chemical properties of humic substances; the relationships among humus, soil properties and fertility; the biotransformations of organic substances in the soil; the relationships between humic substances and plants and the interactions of humus and xenobiotic substances. This book presents recent knowledge of the complicated and challenging humic substances. It will be of interest not only to scientist, but also to University teachers and students of agricultural and environmental ... Read more

Description:
Nitrogen and phosphorus budgets over two annual periods are presented for an establishing surface-flow constructed wetland treating subsurface drainage from rain-fed, dairy cattle grazed pasture in the North Island of New Zealand. Drainage flows to the wetland (occupying ~1% of the catchment area) were highly pulsed, associated with rainfall and soil water status, and differed between years (305 and 197mm drainage). Flow-proportional sampling of inflow and outflow concentrations were combined with continuous flow records to calculate mass balances for the wetlands. Influent nitrate concentrations were high (median 11gm^-^3) in both years, but transient loads of organic N were also an important form of N in the first year. Mass removal of total nitrogen (TN) and its main constituent forms nitrate/nitrite and organic N was recorded for all seasons over both annual periods studied. TN mass removal efficiency of 79% (841gm^-^2 per year) in the first year, declined to 21% (40gm^-^2 per year) in the second year, associated with changes in the magnitude, speciation and seasonal pattern of N export from the catchment. Ammoniacal N (NH"4-N), which comprised <0.5% of TN loadings to the wetland, was generated in small amounts during passage through the wetland in both years. Total phosphorus (TP) in the drainage waters occurred at median concentrations of 0.1-0.2gm^-^3, mainly in dissolved reactive forms (DRP 92% by mass). TP export rose by 101% (5.0gm^-^2 per year) after passage through the wetland in the first year, but decreased by 12% (0.2gm^-^2 per year) in the second year. The results show that constructed wetlands comprising ~1% of catchment area can markedly reduce N export via pastoral drainage, but may be net sources of NH"4-N, DRP and TP during establishment. Performance of the wetland appeared to be affected by both establishment/maturation factors and year-to-year climatic variations. Longer-term studies, supplemented by process-based laboratory and mesocosm investigations, are required to evaluate sustainable nutrient removal rates over a range of climatic conditions, and identify the key factors regulating performance. ... Description:
This paper presents emergy evaluations of Denmark and Danish agriculture for the years 1936, 1970 and 1999. The evaluations highlight the changing relationship between agriculture and society over the time period studied. A large increase in total emergy supporting the Danish economy was observed, and the 379% rise from 1936 to 1999 in emergy use per capita, a biophysical measure of living standard, came from both imported sources and from the non-renewable storages of the biosphere. In 1936, Danish agriculture was largely based on the use of draft animals for traction and approximately 1,110,000,000 person-hours of direct labor were required for production, while in 1970 and 1999, all traction was mechanized and approximately 415,000,000 and 121,000,000 person-hours were required for production, respectively. Over the same period, the emergy supporting each person-hour of agricultural labor increased by 1600%. The driving forces for agricultural production shifted towards an increased reliance on commercial energy and indirect labor. Given the increase in emergy available to the Danish economy through extraction and use of domestic oil and gas and trade over the period studied, the shift in labor from agriculture to the service and manufacturing sectors represented a nation-wide re-organization for maximum empower. The evaluations also indicate that while agriculture remains an essential way for industrial economies to capture local renewable resources, given the limited net emergy yields of agricultural production, the magnitude of non-agricultural economic activity that agriculture systems can support appears limited in an economy with access to high-net-yield imported energy resources. ... Mineral emissions from agriculture include nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals, derived particularly from fertilizer use and farm animal wastes in intensive agricultural systems. These have the potential to cause pollution and affect the quality of water, soils, and agricultural produce. This book presents analyses of the economics and policy options related to nonpoint-source pollution in European agriculture. The book includes both theoretical analyses and empirical studies from several countries. It represents an important volume for research academics and professionals in soil science, environmental and pollution studies, and agricultural and environmental economics and policy. ...
