2-0 out of 5 stars For beginners, maybe??
This book may be ok for some who have no experience with energy, but if you've read a little, I wouldn't recommend it. It's got some nice sections, but not particularly easy to read overall. It's not the "one book" that you would buy on energy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars delivery options
I ordered this book for one of my daughter's college courses. The book was fine, but I warn against choosing the expidited shipping option. My order was filled by Caiman_outlet. I payed extra because she needed it asap. I was told it would be 4-6 days but I did not receive my order for 21 days. Needless to say, it put her way behind in her class. Adding to my frustration was my inability to speak to anyone directly at the distributer. I was offered a partial refund of my shipping cost, but by the time I'm done jumping through their hoops, it's not even worth my time. Buyer beware! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars no practical examples.
This book has no practical examples. This book is really boring. It only talks about theories but there aren't any examples or application.

If you're a professor, DO NOT USE THIS BOOK. Use something else.

Product Description

Declining oil supplies and the environmental impact of coal dictate a switch to renewable energy sources for a sustainable future. Written for a popular audience, Energy Switch details this momentous transition and proposes that the remaining non-renewable resources be used to develop a long-term supply of renewable energy.

A renewable energy leader two decades ago, the US now lags behind Germany and Japan. Energy Switch pays special attention to Europe’s success, especially that of Germany, exploring what can be learned from their experience. It asks whether a mix of renewables is feasible as a major source of energy, at what cost, with what drawbacks, and in what time period. The book examines:

  • The shortcomings and benefits of sources that might constitute a largely renewable energy platform: oil, nuclear, coal, biomass, natural gas, wind, PV, geothermal, hydrogen, wave and tidal power
    • Ecological tax reform and tax rebates, quotas and net metering, and the role of privatization
  • The success of efficiency measures, the vision of demand management — tailoring power consumption to intermittent supply — and the phenomenon of virtual power plants
  • The secret of success being in attitudes and policies, rather than in technology
  • How the US could once again become a renewable energy leader

Craig Morris is a journalist and translator specializing in renewable energy. The author of a book in German that presents the rationale behind Germany’s turn to renewable energy, he writes on energy policies and lives in Freiburg, Germany’s solar capital.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive work on future energy sources
Does nuclear power have a role in the green energy revolution? How about coal? What can we learn from Germany, arguably the world's greatest success story in green power? Morris covers all the bases in Energy Switch: Proven Solutions for a Renewable Future. The author's years of energy reporting for Germany's leading tech publisher have paid off in this book. He gives us a complete and nuanced look at all of the different energy sources -- from biomass, to fuel cells, to photovoltaics, to wind. But Morris, doesn't stop with so-called "alternative" energy sources; he also gives us a detailed look at coal, nuclear, natural gas, and oil, with impartial discussions of both the merits and the pitfalls of each.

The books shifts adroitly from the micro level to the big picture, explaining climate, economic, and social consequences. Morris also interprets the German system of subsidies and political measures in a way that is easy to grasp for American readers. And perhaps the book's greatest contribution is the author's practical recommendations for how America can benefit from some of the strategies that have been so successful in Germany.

Like it or not, energy indepenence and renewable energy is where America is headed. Energy Switch is a must-read book for anybody who wants to understand where the ride is taking us.

Product Description
Volume 1: Econometric General Equilibrium Modeling presents an econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling of the impact of economic policies. Earlier approaches were based on the "calibration" of general equilibrium models to a single data point. The obvious disadvantage of calibration is that it requires highly restrictive assumptions about technology and preferences, such as fixed input-output coefficients. These assumptions are contradicted by the massive evidence of energy conservation in response to higher world energy prices, beginning in 1973. The econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling successfully freed economic policy analysis from the straight jacket imposed by calibration. As a consequence of changes in energy prices and new environmental policies, a wealth of historical experience has accumulated over the past two decades. Interpreted within the framework of the neoclassical theory of economic growth, this experience provides essential guidelines for future policy formation. Volume 2: Energy, the Environment, and Economic Growth presents a new econometric general equilibrium model of the United States that captures the dynamic mechanisms underlying growth trends and responses to energy and environmental policies. Jorgenson uses the model to analyze the impacts of environmental regulations on U.S. economic growth and tax policies for controlling U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide. ... Read more

Product Description
The book offers a comprehensive account of how the world evolved to its present state in which humans now exercise a powerful, in many cases dominant, influence for global environmental change. It outlines the history that led to this position of dominance, in particular the role played by our increasing reliance on fossil sources of energy, on coal, oil and natural gas, and the problems that we are now forced to confront as a result of this history. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is greater now than at any time over at least the past 650,000 years with prospects to increase over the next few decades to levels not seen since dinosaurs roamed the Earth 65 million years ago.Comparable changes are evident also for methane and nitrous oxide and for a variety of other constituents of the atmosphere including species such as the ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons for which there are no natural analogues.

Increases in the concentrations of so-called greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are responsible for important changes in global and regional climate with consequences for the future of global society which, though difficult to predict in detail, are potentially catastrophic for a world poorly equipped to cope.Changes of climate in the past were repetitively responsible for the demise of important civilizations. These changes, however, were generally natural in origin in contrast to the changes now underway for which humans are directly responsible. The challenge is to transition to a new energy economy in which fossil fuels will play a much smaller role. We need as a matter of urgency to cut back on emissions of climate altering gases such as carbon dioxide while at the same time reducing our dependence on unreliable, potentially disruptive, though currently indispensable, sources of energy such as oil, the lifeblood of the global transportation system. The book concludes with a discussion of options for a more sustainable energy future, highlighting the potential for contributions from wind, sun, biomass, geothermal and nuclear, supplanting currently unsustainable reliance on coal, oil and natural gas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, captivating resource with broad appeal
This is a remarkably broad book on energy and society--past, present and future--that should appeal to a wide range of people.

One of the things that sets this book apart from other resources on energy issues is that it presents a powerful historical context for energy and its associated economic, political and environmental problems. It traces the origins of our current challenges related to the supplies of fossil and other fuels and the consequences of their consumption, going back not only to the Industrial Revolution but also to earlier civilizations, even as far back as the most ancient ones.Much of the historical discussion focuses on Western and U.S. society, which should appeal especially to American readers. However, the book admirably includes some discussion of Middle Eastern history and technological innovations in civilizations like China and India-Pakistan as well.

McElroy's book packs a tremendous amount of information into a manageable-sized volume. In addition to human and industrial history, McElroy also covers subjects such as geologic history, biology and ecology; chemistry concepts; the physics of engines, electricity, nuclear reactions, the climate system and weather. Each chapter is an entire story unto itself.Parts of chapters can be used too to provide information on a particular energy-related issue. For example, the chapter on ethanol as a substitute for gasoline includes a strong, clear and balanced discussion of the economic and environmental costs and benefits of producing ethanol from corn, providing objective information with which one can see whether or not corn ethanol is a climate-friendly fuel that can reduce our reliance on foreign oil.

Nearly all of the chapters contain quantitative problems and solutions, set apart in boxes, that are helpful for illustrating the concepts described in the main text. These boxes can be easily skipped by the casual reader without detracting from understanding of the book.

There are also tables throughout that summarize the facts and ideas described in particular sections.

McElroy's attitude on different energy resources is pragmatic and politically middle-of-the-road.He gives all the major energy technologies--be it coal with carbon capture and storage, nuclear, hydropower, or wind--fair consideration.

Although the language in the book is somewhat formal, McElroy lightens up in places and tells amusing stories about inventors' legal machinations and switching of national allegiances. The chapter on electricity includes a rather humorous box on how to recharge a dead car battery--information that is yet practical and scientifically educational.

Overall, this is an amazing work that will captivate the reader and also serve as a useful reference book that can be consulted when information on almost anything related to energy is needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Scholarly Work that Could be Picked Up by Anyone
Michael McElroy's most recent publication is a wide reaching account of energy past, present, and future. The writing takes a common sense approach to the myriad problems, and potential solutions, before us. With extensive examples, the book manages to bring to life real world challenges with simplicity and an easily digested style. While the discussion and examples are thorough and delve into the realm of the technical, it should remain attractive to those with even the most fundamental working knowledge of today's energy issues who simply want to learn more. For extensive history, relevant discussion, and a sophisticated presentation of what the future has in store, look no further than Energy: Perspectives, Problems, and Prospects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
Today it has become clear that the problems of global climate change are the most pressing issues the world faces. To address these problems we need an entirely new strategy for how to produce energy. This is the first book I have found to serve as a basis for a truly balance discussion. It offers all the detail we need to make progress.I wholeheartedly recommend it to all those worried about our energy future

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book for anyone
This book is great. It outlines the history of global civilization in relation to human energy use, putting into context the obstacles associated with combating rising carbon emissions. No matter your background, this book is easy to follow and clearly presents the concepts necessary to understand the rising political battles over energy security and climate change. Most importantly, it allows you to formulate and evaluate solutions for combating rising carbon emissions from human fossil fuel use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A non scientist's view
I find this book remarkable both for it's content and it's delightful style of writing. I have been reading American History for many years. For style- and content-my ideal has been Arthur Schlesinger,SR. and I would rate McElroy's effort as close to my ideal as I have found. He has the same sardonic, matter-of--fact point of view in every sentence. The historical introduction is a joy.
And as a non-scientist, led me into the more technical portions of the book with less trepidation and made my struggle worthwhile.
I heartily recommend this to the lay person struggling for knowledge in the modern world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Passive Solar Compendium
This is the design authority for energy crisis 1.0 passive solar design.Very appropriate today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Resource
Many years ago I found Edward Mazria's 1979 "Passive Solar Energy Book" in a used book store and bought it on a whim. For years it sat waiting in my reference library. Now as a retired Engineer interested in designing an energy independent house -- it is by far, a most useful Bible.

The book's self-limitation to "passive" (rather than "active") systems -- only affects the architectural design philosophy and patterns (rules of thumb). Russel Ball's sketches illustrate basic concepts extremely well.

Charts and tables of solar insolation on surfaces at various latitudes and tilt-angles (from his computer analysis in the 70s) are extensive, detailed and applicable anywhere, for ANY solar design.

My "Professional Edition" (687 pages) includes 14 Appendices filled with reference charts and tables -- and clear plastic chart overlays for latitude and panel orientation. I only wish Mazria's underlying formulas for calculations were provided (as many now on the Internet are dangerously poorly documented.)

The book is written in a friendly and understandable format, while also filled with hard-data -- as relevant today as when written. I can't believe it hasn't been continuously re-published. If you are designing solar and find a copy, grab it without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth, practical methodology book
From a number of books I have been reading on passive energy topics, Mazria's small book is the most concrete, understandable and organized. I designed my home using the book and the forecasted energy compsumptionmatched the calculations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!
When I designed our first house this book was invaluable. We are now designing our second home and looked to see if there is an update.Unfortunately it has not been revised but then little has changed with thesun and mass and the book will once again be a valued resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely indispensable!

Product Description

Thirty years ago, our global energy landscape did not look remarkably different from what it does today. Three or four decades from now, it certainly will: dwindling oil reserves will clash with skyrocketing demand, as developing nations around the world lead their citizens into the modern energy economy, and all the while, the grave threat of catastrophic climate change looms ever larger. Energy worries are at an all-time high—just how will we power our future?

With The Powers That Be, Scott L. Montgomery cuts through the hype, alarmism, and confusion to give us a straightforward, informed account of where we are now, and a map of where we’re going. Starting with the inescapable fact of our current dependence on fossil fuels—which supply 80% of all our energy needs today—Montgomery clearly and carefully lays out the many alternative energy options available, ranging from the familiar, like water and solar, to such nascent but promising sources as hydrogen and geothermal power. What is crucial, Montgomery explains, is understanding that our future will depend not on some single, wondrous breakthrough; instead, we should focus on developing a more diverse, adaptable energy future, one that draws on a variety of sources—and is thus less vulnerable to disruption or failure.

An admirably evenhanded and always realistic guide, Montgomery enables readers to understand the implications of energy funding, research, and politics at a global scale. At the same time, he doesn’t neglect the ultimate connection between those decisions and the average citizen flipping a light switch or sliding behind the wheel of a car, making The Powers That Be indispensible for our ever-more energy conscious age.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for All Seasons
What I appreciate about this book is that it treats the reader as
intelligent and curious, someone able to be informed at a deep level.Too
many energy books for non-scientists are like long newspaper articles,
offering facts and numbers and stories but never getting very far into
things.³Powers that Be² is completely different.It¹s high-quality
science writing, thoughtful evaluation, and also intellectual history rolled
into one.

The reasons are simple.First, Montgomery has spent decades in the energy
industry writing about it (I checked; he has a long list of pubs on GEOREF
and, according to a geologist friend of mine, is well-known in the petroleum
industry) and now teaches about its global realities at the university
level. As an insider, he¹s lived it, studied it, and now makes a living
explaining it to others. He writes with style, in a voice that never
blindly condemns or congratulates. Second, his book isn¹t a manifesto (we¹re
not on the edge of annihilation or nirvana).Instead, he lays out the facts
and realities of all major sources, existing and futuregas, oil, conventional and unconventional), nuclear, renewables (wind,
solar, biofuels, geothermal), hydrogen, fusionadvantages and limitations are, so that it becomes much clearer what we can
and can¹t expect from them.Environmental impacts are part of this too.He
also talks about technology and its limits, a very important subject, and
why we might be expecting too much from it. Montgomery is a strong believer
in R&D, as any scientist probably would be, but he¹s clear that it is no
fix.His treatment of the peak oil debate seemed very balanced to me; I
appreciated how he put it in a larger, historical context and talked about
the different philosophies involved. My favorite chapter was on
geopolitics, the longest in the book:nowhere have I seen so much clear
information about the larger world of energy relations among countries,
pointing out all the difficult and developing relationships. If you think
the BP oil spill in the Gulf is going to change the world¹s mind about deep
offshore drilling, this chapter will tell you why it ain¹t so. There is also
a brief but very illuminating section on the ³oil curse² that should be
required reading for every media wonk who ever speaks the phrase.

Lastly, I like how the book is about the world, not just the U.S., which so
many writers on energy treat as if it existed all by itself, in a global
vacuum. He ends the book with a list of big time conclusions that is worth
the price of admission. If you absorb this alone you¹ll know more than you
thought possible about the next 30 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Powers That Be
At the outset, I must share that I had collaborated with Scott L. Montgomery on a small project some ten years ago.

The issues related to energy, environment, global warming, sustainability are highly complex global issues because they intertwine with other domains of knowledge.Culture, history, science policy, life style, resource management, and economy play an important role in the way we recognize problems and solutions related to the energy issues.Americans have experienced multiple environmental and climate catastrophes, a major war that islabeled by some as a petroleum control measure, and high petroleum prices in the past decade. This has instigated a multitude of books in the market on these topics.

The Powers That Be by Scott L. Montgomery presents these complex issues of energy and provides possible solutions in a simple yet engaging language that is accessible to all.Scott is a story-teller who has fabricated a lucid narrative from the abstract scientific facts intertwined with politics, globalization, culture, politics, and history.Due to these connections and story-telling approach, the book is readable to a general reader interested in learning energy issues. An average non-science person should be able to comprehend the science explained in this book. Also, the story-telling approach used in the narrative makes it easier to retain and recall the information when needed. As a teacher, this is an important aspect to me.

In order to effectively communicate with his readers, Scott has used analogies and even tried to use much simplified language to explain abstract concepts of science. This is done in a careful manner to introduce the subject matter to readers without sacrificing much accuracy. For example, the three laws of thermodynamics are introduced in terms that one can understand at several levels: (1) you can't get something from nothing, (2) you can't break even, either, and (3) you can't get out of the game (on page 6). A more careful scientifically correct definitions are alsoprovided.

The contents of the book are thoroughly researched and provide factual information about the non-Western world that is generally ignored in so many books. For example, dealing with Iran, Scott has intertwined the politics, science, and culture and presented a case that explains the dire shortage of gasoline there. The book is written with a comprehensive global view, defining interconnections and implications for not only the developed countries, but also for Algeria, Angola, China, India, Iraq, Iran, Kazakhstan, Venezuela and other countries where the available information is scant.

For my personal taste, I would prefer more visuals, graphs, and tables. However, the statistical information is provided in text compensate well for this.

I believe that this book will be particularly useful to students learning comparative science policies or energy policies courses where one has to mix the abstract facts of science with other domain of knowledge. It is also an excellent introductory book on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read on Global Energy Reality
This is the essential thinking person's guide to global energy, hands down.It covers more material than any energy book I've ever seen, and does so in a truly thoughtful and informed way.I came away feeling it was comprehensive, intelligible, and eloquent, a book I very much wanted to recommend to others.

"Powers that Be" is factual, even densely so in some places, but it's really a book about how both science and ideas rule the energy universe.By "ideas," I mean things like attitudes toward progress and the environment, beliefs about society, philosophies related to nature and the economy, government policies, and the like.Montgomery makes clear how these sorts of realities play a powerful role in determining energy choices, no matter how scientifically naïve they might be.I never appreciated this before; it changed my view on our national, or global, conversations about energy.

There are chapters on every major energy source (their nature, abundance, advantages, limitations, environmental impacts, status, possible futures), including some not yet in use but probably on the way later in the century (hydrogen, fusion).Montgomery also devotes entire chapters to the big issues like energy history; world trends in production, demand, and consumption; geopolitics; climate change; peak oil; and the role of technology.I don't think you'll find this many subjects handled in any other single volume.

The author doesn't preach any one set of solutions. In fact, this wouldn't really make sense. His subject is global, not the U.S. or North America. He wants to inform us to the level where we can judge different versions of a better future on their own merits. He does have his own views, for sure.He believes government must play a part in the energy future, since it can take a long-term view, support research at a high level, and its outlook is not geared to profits but public welfare. This may seem naïve in some ways, but by the end I found it fairly convincing because of the examples discussed.

To me, the author (who has spent many years in the energy industry) is level headed. There's no doomsday stuff and no overriding pessimism. He also doesn't feel that everything can be made green in just a few short years.I'd call the tone of the book an example of sober optimism. After reading his chapters on renewables and technology, I feel I am in a much better position to evaluate some of the claims I see made in the media about these sources, positive and negative.

I also appreciated the style of the writing. It has some literary qualities and a fair amount of humor, too. This made the book enjoyable to read, something I never expected. If you want one volume on energy to tell you about where the world really is today, as a world, this is the one to get.

One of the central tenets of this book is that governmentalpolicies must be designed to take into account market characteristicsand environmental phenomena - simultaneously. This volumecontains a new research effort of the `Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei'and explores the theoretical underpinnings of environmental policy ina sub-optimal world.
Topics considered link economic issues (oligopolistic marketstructures, firm heterogeneity, and the strategic behavior ofgovernments) to environmental issues (emission abatements, cleanertechnologies, and environmental taxation).
The articles in this volume were chosen to achieve a balance betweenbreadth and depth and were written by leading experts in the field. Inshort, this book is rich in policy implications and raises new issuesand questions for future research. ... Read more
