Product Description
Published in 1991, the first edition of The Practical Handbook of Ground-Water Monitoring quickly became the gold standard reference on the topic of ground-water monitoring. But, as in all rapidly evolving fields, regulations change, technology advances, methods improve, and research reveals flaws in prior thinking. As a consequence, books that document the state of the science, even widely acknowledged definitive works, become outdated and need to be rewritten periodically to stay current. Reflecting this and renamed to highlight its wider scope, The Practical Handbook of Environmental Site Characterization and Ground-Water Monitoring, Second Edition provides an updated look at the field. Completely revised, the book contains so much new information that it has doubled in size.

Containing the most up-to-date information available, this second edition emphasizes the practical application of current technology. It covers environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring in great detail, from the federal regulations that govern environmental investigations, to the various direct and indirect methods of investigating and monitoring the subsurface, to the analysis and interpretation of complex sets of environmental data.

Cheaper, better, faster was the mantra of the 1990s, resulting in more streamlined approaches to both environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring, but also pitting the application of good science against the mandate to get a project done as quickly and inexpensively as possible. This book provides unbiased, technical discussions of the tremendously powerful tools developed in the last decade, helping environmental professionals strike a balance between good science and economics. ... Product Description
This book discusses a broad range of statistical design and analysis methods that are particularly well suited to pollution data. It explains key statistical techniques in easy-to-comprehend terms and uses practical examples, exercises, and case studies to illustrate procedures. Dr. Gilbert begins by discussing a space-time framework for sampling pollutants. He then shows how to use statistical sample survey methods to estimate average and total amounts of pollutants in the environment, and how to determine the number of field samples and measurements to collect for this purpose. Then a broad range of statistical analysis methods are described and illustrated. These include:

  • determining the number of samples needed to find hot spots
  • analyzing pollution data that are lognormally distributed
  • testing for trends over time or space
  • estimating the magnitude of trends
  • comparing pollution data from two or more populations
New areas discussed in this sourcebook include statistical techniques for data that are correlated, reported as less than the measurement detection limit, or obtained from field-composited samples. Nonparametric statistical analysis methods are emphasized since parametric procedures are often not appropriate for pollution data. This book also provides an illustrated comprehensive computer code for nonparametric trend detection and estimation analyses as well as nineteen statistical tables to permit easy application of the discussed statistical techniques. In addition, many publications are cited that deal with the design of pollution studies and the statistical analysis of pollution data. This sourcebook will be a useful tool for applied statisticians, ecologists, radioecologists, hydrologists, biologists, environmental engineers, and other professionals who deal with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of pollution in air, water, and soil. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference book
This book is exceptionally easy to read for a stat book.It is very straightforward with practical examples and an emphasis on "how to" with just enough -- but not overwhelming -- theory. Some statistical bakcground is definitely helpful, but the basic principles are presented simply enough that a novice shouldn't feel too uncomfortable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
If you are responsible for designing, reviewing, or interpreting environmental sampling and the resultig analytical reports, then BUY THIS BOOK, READ IT, DO THE EXCERCISES!

You must have some background in statistics to understand it, so if you don't have that, take an introduction to statistics course.Otherwise go play in another sandbox, you'll be outclassed in this one. ;-)

Product Description
Environmental pollution and related human health concerns have now reached critical levels in many areas of the world. International programs for
researching, monitoring and preventing the causes of these phenomena are
ongoing in many countries. There is an imperative call for reliable and
cost-effective information on the basal pollution levels both for areas
already involved in intense industrial activities, and for sites with industrial development potential.

Biomonitoring methods can be used as unfailing tools for the control of
contaminated areas, as well as in environmental prevention studies. Human biomonitoring is now widely recognized as a tool for human exposure assessment, providing suitable and useful indications of the `internal dose' of chemical agents.

Bioindicators, biomonitors, and biomarkers are all well-known terms among environmental scientists, although their meanings are sometimes misrepresented. Therefore, a better and full comprehension of the role of biological monitoring, and its procedures for evaluating polluting impacts on environment and health is needed. This book gives an overview of the state of the art of relevant aspects of biological monitoring for the
evaluation of ecosystem quality and human health. ... Read more

Product Description

The infrasound field, the science of low-frequency acoustic waves, has developed into a broad interdisciplinary field encompassing academic disciplines of physics and recent technical and scientific developments.

In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting atmospheric nuclear explosions worldwide.

The infrasound network of the International Monitoring Network (IMS) of the CTBT-Organization has demonstrated its capability for detecting and locating infrasonic sources such as meteorites, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, auroras, mountain associated waves... Nearly 70% of the global network is now operational and regional cluster arrays are deployed around the globe. Systematic investigations into low-frequency acoustic signals have evidenced an unprecedented potential of the monitoring of infrasonic waves permanently generated by natural and man-made events. Furthermore, recent studies point out new insights on quantitative relationships between observables and atmospheric specifications, and therefore opening new fields into the mathematics of geophysical inverse problems for atmospheric remote sensing.

This single volume handbook reviews the most important areas of infrasound, with emphasis on the latest researches and applications, e.g. instrumentation, engineering, signal processing, source monitoring, propagation modeling, atmospheric dynamics, global changes, remote sensing methods.

Researchers and students will benefit from a comprehensive content of infrasound related topics, where both fundamental and applied topics are discussed by authors from international institutions, all experts in their fields.

Product Description
Monitoring pollutants in air, soil and water is a routine requirement in the workplace, and in the wider environment. Passive samplers can provide arepresentative picture of levels of pollutants over a period of time from days to months by measuring the average concentrations to which they have been exposed.Air monitors are widely used, for instance to measure the exposure of workers to volatile compounds, but also for monitoring the fate of pollutants in the atmosphere. Passive sampling devices are now becomining increasingly used to monitor pollutants in rivers, coastal waters and ground water where contamination results from sources such asdomestic and industrial discharges, and the use of agrochemicals.
Passive Sampling Techniques in Environmental Monitoring provides a timely collection of information on a set of techniques that help monitor the quality of air, surface and ground waters.Passive sampling can provide an inexpensive means of obtaining a representative picture of quality over a period of time, even where levels of pollutants fluctuate due to discontinuous discharges or seasonal application of chemicals such as pesticides. Recent changes in legislation have increased the pressure to obtain better information than that provided by classical infrequent spot sampling.
Brought together in one source, this book looks at the performance of a range of devices for the passive sampling of metals, and of non-polar and polar organic chemicals in air and in water. The strengths and weaknesses and the range of applicability of the technology are considered.

* Comprehensive review of passive sampling - covering air, water and majority of available technologies in one volume
* Chapters written by international specialistexperts
* Covers theory and applications, providingbackground information and guidelines for use in the field ... Read more

Product Description
Ecologists and managers of natural resources readily acknowledge the importance of long-term studies and monitoring for improved understanding and management of complex environmental systems. Long-term data are crucially important for providing baselines for evaluating environmental change. They are also fundamental for detecting and evaluating changes in ecosystem structure and function, and for evaluating response to disturbances such as climate change or pollution. Countless scientific articles, books, management plans and other documents have been written about the need to conduct long-term studies and monitoring. However, although there have undoubtedly been some highly successful long-term ecological studies and monitoring programs, there is a history of poorly planned and unfocused efforts that are either ineffective or fail completely.

In this book, the authors outline some of the key pitfalls and deficiencies in ecological monitoring programs and long-term studies. They then describe some of the features of monitoring programs and long-term studies that are essential to make them viable, using case studies such as those of Rothamsted (UK) and the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (USA). Based upon their collective experience spanning 70 years in establishing long-term studies and natural resource monitoring programs, the authors propose a new approach, which they call Adaptive Monitoring, to resolve some of these problems underlying poorly planned and unfocused monitoring programs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have book for those who care about the Environment
OVERVIEW.This book is written by scientists, engineers and economists who have been at the forefront of environmental assessment and the incorporation of industrial ecology in environmental assessments since 1970 when the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) was passed. As practitioners and academicians, the authors apply their wealth of knowledge, experience and expertise gained over the past three decades to (1) bring order to the chaotic mass of environmental legislation, regulation, executive orders, policy acts, documents, and reports; and to (2) provide readers with a systematic, interdisciplinary step-by-step procedure for preparing environmental assessments and statements. They solve the problem, and help reader's solve the particular manifestation of the problem in the reader's life.

ORIGIN.While working together at the Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, Illinois in the early 1970's, they developed a handbook to assist U.S. Army personnel in addressing the NEPA requirement to prepare documentation of the environmental impacts of their proposed actions. This handbook developed procedures to include both the natural and physical environment and the relationship of humans with the environment. On page x of the Preface, they tell us that this sweeping incorporation of socioeconomic environment with the biophysical environment was controversial at the time and was considered to go far beyond what NEPA "really required."A couple of decades later, Ravi Jain, who was the leader of the Environmental Policy Institute (and this group of gentlemen), was awarded the Army Corps of Engineers "Engineer of the Year" Award in appreciation for his prescient focus.

FUTURE APPLICATION.Going beyond a static description of steps to follow in conducting a comprehensive, deliberative and systematic assessment -- which will help the reader satisfy existing environmental protection requirements, the authors takes a Socratic approach in conveying information to the reader so that the reader can anticipate future requirements. They not only provide information, they provide insight into their mental paradigm and reasoning process. They do this by asking questions. The book starts with a question:"What is environmental assessment?"The book ends with a question:"How are these contemporary issues (i.e., global warming, acid rain, deforestation, endangered species, biodiversity, cultural resources, ecorisk) different?"Imbetween the beginning and the end, each chapter has a section of discussion and study questions.

GLOBAL APPLICATION.In the same way that the U.S. did not pay much attention to environmental protection during the first 200 years of its existence, other countries around the world do not pay as much attention to environmental issues as they will in the future.Until the day arrives that there is a universal commitment to protecting the environment, to what extent should the U.S. apply NEPA outside its borders; and to what extent should the U.S. expect international partners to conform to NEPA requirements? There is not one simple answer to this question, and the authors present their considerations, examples of rulings to apply NEPA extraterritorially (e.g., in Environmental Defense Fund v. USAID a proposed program to spray pesticides in 20 developing countries ), and rulings against application of NEPA (e.g., in Greenpeace USA v. Stone in movement of chemical munitions by the U.S. Army across West Germany). The authors also are lucid -- and brave, in candidly discussing limitations to the effectiveness of applying one of NEPA's major tools, Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) globally:limited technical abilities, lack of data-gathering capability, lack of scientific understanding, and lack of expert staff hamper EIA in developing countries.Their presentation of different issues to consider in the extraterritorial application of NEPA and its assessments is not reductionist-- it appropriately expands the reader'perspective on global issues.

REAL-WORLD APPLICATION.The author's do not shy away from the harder-to-quantify organizational and political factors that can occur in industry, government and academia; they advise the readers to (be brave and) include those fuzzy factors in the EIA.For example, in Chapter 7, they acknowledge that it is not always possible to easily or quickly obtain information regarding regulatory (legislative) and non-regulatory (political) constraints. They advise the reader to include information on regulatory constraints by accessing available regulatory and legislative data systems (listed in Chapter Two); and to go ahead and include information on non-regulatory constraints, such as public opinion or internal organizational goals. They caution the reader that it is important to carefully consider these institutional constraints in the EIA process because they could place severe constraints on the successful implementation of projects or actions. This is good advice that readers can apply in the real-world.

BROAD APPLICATION.The tables, figures, case studies, discussion and study questions mean that this book can be used as a textbook in an academic setting; and as a tool to broach a difficult topic in an industrial or governmental setting.I can imagine the book being used to bolster one's point of view..."Oh, by the way, Mike, you know how we were talking about how Janice doesn't think that demographic factors should be included in the impact statement? That it will unnecessarily complicate her budget appeal?Jain's book has a table listing socioeconomic attributes that includes demographic and population effects (p. 260, Table 10.6), and a figure showing how direct in-migrating population changes the level of public and private services required, which in turn changes the public sector capital requirement (p.261, Figure 10.2).Janice could use this to argue for a higher capital budget...we should show her this before she has a meeting with the state legislature next week."

CONCLUSION.That environmentalists can apply knowledge from this book to the future, to forays into the global arena, and to assessments in the real-world increases the utility of this book.In the way that Michael Kotler's book on Marketing Management is a must-have for anyone serious about marketing, this book on Environmental Assessment is a must-have for anyone serious about the environment. ... Product Description
It is increasingly recognized that the greatest risks of error in environmental analysis lie in the sample preparation rather than the analysis stage. This book describes the precautions that must be taken from the sampling to the sample pretreatment via the storage stage to assure good quality. Typical pitfalls - and recommendations for avoiding them - are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the monitoring of trace contaminants in environmental matrices (e. g., water, sediment, plants, air).

This book, based on the experience of specialists, constitutes an invaluable guide to the quality assurance relevant to environmental chemists. ... Read more
