Product Description
At DART'09, held in conjunction with the 2009 IEEE/WIC/ACM International Conference on Web Intelligence (WI 2009) and Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT 2009) in Milan (Italy), practitioners and researchers working on pervasive and intelligent access to web services and distributed information retrieval met to compare their work ad insights in such fascinating topics. Extended and revised versions of their papers, together with selected and invited original contributions, are collected in this book. Topics covered are those that emerged at DART'09 as the most intriguing and challenging: (i) community oriented tools and techniques as infrastructure of the Web 2.0; (ii) agent technology applied to virtual world scenarios; (iii) context aware information retrieval; (iv) content based information retrieval; and (v) industrial applications of information retrieval. Every chapter, before discussing in depth the specific topic, presents a comprehensive review of related work and state of the art, in the hope of this volume to be of use in the years to come, to both researchers and students. ... Excerpt: There are a number of adverse environmental effects of coal mining and burning. Coal mining causes a number of harmful effects. When coal surfaces are exposed, pyrite (iron sulfide), also known as "fool's gold", comes in contact with water and air and forms sulfuric acid. As water drains from the mine, the acid moves into the waterways, and as long as rain falls on the mine tailings the sulfuric acid production continues, whether the mine is still operating or not. This process is known as acid rock drainage (ARD) or acid mine drainage (AMD). If the coal is strip mined, the entire exposed seam leaches sulfuric acid, leaving the subsoil infertile on the surface and begins to pollute streams by acidifying and killing fish, plants, and aquatic animals which are sensitive to drastic pH shifts. Coal mining produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Methane is the naturally occurring product of the decay of organic matter as coal deposits are formed with increasing depths of burial, rising temperatures, and rising pressures over geological time. A portion of the methane produced is absorbed by the coal and later released from the coal seam and surrounding disturbed s...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15980775 ... Read more

Product Description
An element in the earth’s crust, an additive in livestock feed. a medicine in early civilization—and the &#quot;toxin of toxins&#quot; A pervasive part of our natural environment and everyday lives. arsenic has nonetheless earned a niche in history as a substance of diabolical suppleness. Part II of the first comprehensive and up-to-date two-volume study of arsenic, Arsenic in the Environment is a self-contained work that examines arsenic’s complex and potentially deadly chemistry, stressing its effect on human health and the surrounding ecosystem. Examining new and unexplored aspects of the toxin, Part II features original research from some of the world’s foremost scientists on:

  • Health effects of environmental arsenic
  • Toxicity and metabolism of inorganic and methylated arsenicals
  • Effects of arsenic on DNA synthesis of human lymphocytes
  • Estimation of human exposure to and uptake of arsenic found in drinking water
  • Arsenic hazards to plants and animals
Offering a host of subjects of particular interest to toxicologists, medical researchers, public health officials, and industrial hygienists, Part II of Arsenic in the Environment is an indispensable reference that sheds new light on arsenic’s unique chemistry as well as its health and environmental effects. ... This empirical study provides an introduction to the dynamics of regulatory federalism and is the first book to focus on the major issues involved in the regulation of surface mining. A broad spectrum of contributors, most with first-hand experience, describe the forces that have shaped the implementation of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act since 1972. They offer varying perspectives for understanding technological and market considerations, intergovernmental procedures and problems, interest group forces, the role of the courts, Congress, and the states. ... Description:
Research was conducted to identify some of the current pollution minimisation practices adopted in Australia's mining and mineral processing industries. Initially, 84 mining and mineral processing companies were approached for inclusion in the study, with request only made for information that was available to the company stakeholders and the wider general community. Among the responses received, BHP Billiton, BlueScope Steel, Newmont Australia Limited and AngloGold Australia provided the information requested and/or a substantial quantity of information through reports on their company website. Analysis of the data collected for these companies indicated that improvements were made, and that policies had been implemented over the previous few years. The pollution minimisation and policy practices adopted at the operations of these companies include environmental management systems, advanced pollution control technologies, environmental awareness training for employees, and requirement - from company stakeholders - for increased accountability of environmental impacts. ... Description:
Small-scale gold miners lose annually 500-700 tonnes of mercury when amalgamating gold with mercury and subsequent burning. So far, mercury-free alternatives have been demanding more skill, time, or capital investments and the interest from the miners to reduce the mercury emissions has been limited. Recent development of mercury free methods, an increasing mercury price, and increased awareness of health and environmental damages caused by mercury is changing the attitudes. This trend could be spurred by certification of gold with added value due to clean production methods. Our objectives are to present a method to distinguish gold recovered without using mercury or harmful chemicals such as cyanide. Thereby, this gold could be certified and thus obtain a higher market price. The method is based on inspection of the gold grain surfaces with a light microscope. This method separated natural gold grains from gold recovered by amalgamation or cyanidation. The method also demonstrated different characteristics of gold grains from different gold fields and a basis for a catalogue with photomicrographs of gold grains from different gold fields has been established and partly presented in this article. In conclusion, studies of gold grains with a light microscope and photo documentation is an inexpensive but reliable method to distinguish environment-friendly recovered gold, which could be used for certification to get a higher market price. ... Description:
Ghana is the second largest producer of gold in sub-Saharan Africa, and has experienced a significant increase in national mining production over the last two decades. Between 1983 and 1998, the mining industry brought approximately US $4 billion in foreign direct investment to Ghana. While large-scale gold mining has seen a significant increase, artisanal gold and diamond mining product have grown exponentially. While much research has been conducted on gold mining in Ghana, there is relatively little research on the environmental and human development consequences of diamond mining in the country. Unlike other West African countries such as Sierra Leonne and Liberia, small-scale diamond mining in Ghana has not been linked to conflict but its role in development has also been relatively modest. This paper examines large and small-scale mining in Ghana's largest diamond mining town, Akwatia, and their relative impact on environmental degradation, health, and the livelihood of artisanal miners. We conclude that while an increase in artisanal diamond mining has been a means of employement and income-generation for small-scale miners, there are some human development challenges, related to environmental burden from land degradation and health. GCD is an ailing mining company in Ghana, in desperate need of an injection of capital to keep the mine alive, but botched bidding has slowed the process of de-regulating the company. We also conclude that the de-regulation of GCD may lead to a relatively reduced environmental burden in Akwatia and more revenue for the GCD to invest in the human development needs of communities in the town. ... Description:
This article offers a critical analysis of some of the issues associated with the emerging mining sector in Madagascar, within the context of the redefinition of the role of the State. First focusing on the development model elaborated by the World Bank and its influence on the adoption of a new mining code in Madagascar, the analysis demonstrates that it is difficult for the sector's new legislation to allow the Malagasy State to manage the social and environmental aspect of the mining industry. ...
