Product Description
The ever-growing need for energy has given rise to a significant increase in the extraction and transportation of oil. As a consequence there has been an increase in the number of spills from oil wells and tankers at sea, resulting in significant environmental problems. The development of adequate oil spill contingency plans requires information about a large number of physical, chemical and biologically complex phenomena. Research results on oil spill modelling, prevention and mitigation methods are therefore an essential tool for engineers and managers involved in such planning.

This book addresses recent research advances from many countries in oil spill modelling, prevention, behaviour, effects, control, and cleanup techniques. First presented at the Second International Conference on Oil and Hydrocarbon Spills - Modelling, Analysis and Control, the contributions are divided under the following headings: Modelling of Trajectory and Fate of Spills; Spills in Estuaries and Coastal Areas; Biological Impact of Oil Pollution; Cleanup Measures and Recovery; Experimental and Laboratory Analysis; and Oil Spill Detection and Prevention. ... Product Description
Copper is one of the three most important metals in the worldeconomy, and the only one of the three that is comparatively scarce inthe earth's crust. Known reserves will only last a few decades atprojected rates of consumption. While some substitution possibilitiesexist for some of its applications, copper is uniquely valuable as aconductor of electricity in a world that is rapidly electrifying. Thisfact makes the copper life cycle an appropriate subject for holisticanalysis. This book, which includes a quantitative demand forecastingmodel, is based on a study commissioned by the International Institutefor Environment and Development (IIED) for the World Business Councilfor Sustainable Development (WBCSD) fills that need for the firsttime. Among the conclusions of the study are the following. The medium-termprospects for copper producers and copper consuming industries include(1) more intensive exploration into more remote regions, (2)utilization of lower grade ores resulting in more mine wastes andassociated waste disposal problems, (3) more intensive miningefficient ore reduction processes, (4) dramatic price increases whenthe current glut works itself out, (5) significant changes in thepatterns of consumption (increasingly electrical applications), (6)sharp increases in the need for recovering and recycling old scrapcopper in the future, (7) a significant buildup of copper andby-products (especially arsenic) either in use or in the humanenvironment. Similar implications can be drawn for two other scarceand toxic metals - lead and zinc - often found in geologicalassociation with copper. ... Read more

Product Description
When Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan founded Method, the environmentally friendly brand of cleaning products, they used packaging stylish enough to showcase on the countertop and pleasant aromas such as green tea and cucumber to transform household products into must-have lifestyle accessories. And when they coined the phrase "People Against Dirty," they weren't just talking about the stuff you track in on your shoes they also meant the toxic chemicals that make up many household detergents. Packed with helpful tips and surprising facts, their first book, Squeaky Green, is a totally informative and completely entertaining room-by-room guide to giving dirty the boot. Squeaky Green is rehab for chemically dependant homes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Educational and helpful
I bought this book because I already love Method products, and I want to know the history behind such a reputable company. I love Method even more, and I love their manifesto and philosophy on life. They do so much for the environment, and this book is helpful in what to clean, how to clean it in a green way, and just how to live a better lifestyle that helps the Earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener
Simple review:I love Method products because they use biodegradable, non-toxic products that not only smell good, but also WORKS and doesn't give me a rash or make my skin react in negative ways.

This book is, of course, showing and promoting method products, but it exposes what most people don't know (and probably what most people don't want to know) about the dirty stuff in your home (bar soap included).

It's not a cure all book, but it is an eye opener that's also aesthetically pleasing and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to green living
This book is a well organized, easy to read introduction to green cleaning and living. It was not designed to be an encyclopedic guide to green living. The authors explain the health and environmental issues associated with chemicals used in our furniture, clothing, paint, carpet, bedding, toys, cleaning chemicals, household items and pet products, and offer simple alternatives and tips to address these issues. While the solutions may not be complete (or "completely green"), they are all practical and palatable for the average person who wants to improve the health of his or her home while maintaining a mainstream lifestyle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I LOVED this book, couldn't put it down.Very easy to read and understand and funny too.Lots of "green" tips for you, the family and the home.A definite read for anyone going the green way of life and doing the right thing for your health and for the earth:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Learned a lot
This book looks lightweight but it gave me a lot of info in stylish, tabbed sections with good photography and witty asides. Even if you are already an eco-consumer, chances are each section will have one or two new facts. For instance in the Bedroom section, I learned about PBDE-free mattresses and the hidden danger in wrinkle free sheets. In Laundry rooms I learned specifics about dry cleaning solvent and in Bathrooms I gleaned insights about some organic product loopholes and another name for pesticide in toothpaste. There are great tidbits in every chapter and while the authors take the subject seriously, the book has a fun presentation that leaves a reader feeling like it is easy to make some important changes. ... Product Description
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the complex, interdisciplinary field of hazardous waste management, with thoroughly updated information on the most current methods of treatment, disposal, and site remediation.

The management of hazardous waste has changed dramatically since the 1960's and continues to evolve as our knowledge of both the hazards and management methods grows. Since the last edition was published (1994), much of the emphasis has shifted: from site assessments to site remediation, from new facility siting to pollution prevention, and from a newly emerging market to a mature market. The new edition provides comprehensive coverage of these changes in the field. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fast arrival
Very nice and kind seller.... although the book was not as well kept as I expected,at least had all the pages in it... I think that it is part of the risks that you take when you buy an used book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Waste Management...Don't Be Scared By The Book's Size!
This is a really good book that I had to purchase for my graduate level Haz. and Waste Management class. Each chapter provides detailed info, covering everything from solidification and stabilization to proper waste management protocols and corrective action procedures for disposing of waste. You'll also find info about biological and chemical reactions, as well as land disposal and recycling. In other words, it covers the gamut.

Initially, I thought that the book would be boring, but I really learned a great deal from it. We had to do select homework problems from each chapter (some of which our teacher required a lot of detailed answers for), which weren't that bad. The only problem that I had was a lack of any kind of hint for the questions at the end of the chapter. Most of the answers you can find by reading certain chapters, but if you are unsure of where to find that info, you're out of luck if your teacher doesn't correct your papers. Overall, this book comes highly recommended for learning the finer details of waste management!

5-0 out of 5 stars designer's reference
Although this book is geared towards upper level engineering students, I found it extremely beneficial in my research as a graduate student in architecture.Architects and landscape architects interested in reclaiming the post-industrial landscape will find it to be a clear and concise guide to contaminants and remediation technologies.

3-0 out of 5 stars A plug for ERM - pure and simple!
The titlle of the book implies that it has much to do with hazardous waste management, although in reality, it is more about remediation or site cleanup.Classic hazardous waste management deals with the MANAGEMENT of hazardous wastes within an industrial setting and how NOT to let it get into the media in the first place. In this regard, while the authors had the right intention, they fell short. For example, the chapter on environmental auditing was very weak and not given much attention, which is really at the heart of hazardous waste management. In addition, a troubling issue that took away from the book was the blatent self-promotion of ERM in the book, beginning with the foreward by Paul Woodruf, ERM's CEO, and the profuse listing of ERM self credits from editing to graphics.Who really authored the book, the authors listed, or ERM?
