    Extractions: Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is a steroid hormone, a chemical cousin of testosterone and estrogen. It is made from cholesterol by the adrenal glands, which sit atop each kidney. For the first few years of life, the adrenals make very little DHEA, but around age six or seven, they begin producing it.. Production peaks in the mid-twenties, when DHEA is the most abundant hormone in circulation. From one's early thirties on, there's a steady decline in DHEA production and the average 75-year-old has only twenty percent of the DHEA in circulation that he or she had fifty years earlier. At all ages, men tend to have higher DHEA levels than women. Women with Addison’s disease have abnormally low levels of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) and androgens relative to their age. Researchers in Sweden designed a study, albeit a small one, to determine an appropriate dose of DHEA replacement therapy for nine women with Addison’s disease. In a report in the journal of Clinical Endocrinology, June, 2000. researchers at the Departments of Medicine, University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden, administered a daily dose of 50 mg DHEA to five women and 200mg DHEA to four women. Blood samples, insulin sensitivity, and body composition were done before, during, and after DHEA treatment.

The hormone is already available as a vitamin tablet in the United States. However, it is banned in other countries, including Britain, and there have been concerns that it could be taken as a performance enhancing drug. After a year, they assessed the psychological health of patients using assessment tests. Patients also underwent scans to test their bone density. The researchers found that patients who had taken the vitamin were more positive psychologically. There were also indications that their bones were stronger, although the researchers acknowledged that more study is needed to determine if there is a direct link.

We are awaiting the results of blood tests, but the vet is pretty certain that Stinky has it. Hopefully we've caught it early and there appears to be no damage to liver or kidney function. The vet is hopeful that it can be managed with drugs and regular blood tests.

Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s Disease) By Janice Madjanovich Hypoadrenocoricism is a condition which results when the outer layer, or cortex, of the adrenal glands fails in its secretion of the mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid hormones. It is often called Addison’s Disease after the man who first described this syndrome in humans in 1855. It is not a very common disease in dogs, but unfortunately Tollers have an increased incidence of this condition. Middle-aged animals and particularly females are most commonly affected. The adrenal glands which lie near the kidneys, have several important functions. Different areas secrete different hormones, with several different actions. The mineralocorticoids of which the main one is called aldosterone, are important in the regulation of electrolytes in the body. Their main action is to conserve sodium, chiefly by promoting reabsorption by the kidney. Water follows the sodium, so they indirectly affect the water balance of the body. They are also responsible for excreting potassium.
