Extractions: Xanax Addiction D rug rehabilitation is a multi-phase, multi-faceted, long-term process. Detoxification is only the first step on the road of addiction treatment. Physical detoxification alone is not sufficient to change the patterns of a drug addict. Recovery from addiction involves an extended process that usually requires the help of drug addiction professionals. To make a successful recovery, the addict needs new tools in order to deal with situations and problems that arise. Factors such as encountering someone from their days of using, returning to the same environment and places, or even small things such as smells and objects trigger memories which can create psychological stress. This can hinder the addict's goal of complete recovery, thus not allowing the addict to permanently regain control of his or her life. A lmost all addicts tell themselves in the beginning that they can conquer their addiction on their own without the help of outside resources. Unfortunately, this is not usually the case. When an addict makes an attempt at detoxification and to discontinue drug use without the aid of professional help, statistically the results do not last long. Research into the effects of long-term addiction has shown that substantial changes in the way the brain functions are present long after the addict has stopped using drugs. Realizing that a drug addict wanting to recover from their addiction needs more than just strong will power is the key to a successful recovery. Battling not only cravings for their drug of choice, re-stimulation of their past and changes in the way their brain functions, it is no wonder that quitting drugs without professional help is an uphill battle.

Extractions: About Me I have found it to be beneficial to provide some history about myself so that people will relate to who I am. I am John G. Banks, and I was born in December of 1950 (which makes me 50 years of age). I was raised in Sacramento attending Ethel I. Baker elementary, Fern Bacon Junior High, and Luther Burbank High School. I graduated from there in 1968. I went to work for Lucky Stores in 1967 and remained there until I was drafted into the Army in 1970. I was discharged in 1972 and went back to work with Luckys. The military made a man out of me and by doing so, taught me to drink like a man. It is important to note that someone in recovery needing spiritual values did not find them through religion. It was very clear to me that religion and I did not mix very well. I became a Christian in 1994 even though Alcoholics Anonymous had given me some positive insight into a God of my understanding. I still struggled with a 21 year history of drug and alcohol abuse. I had come to the point in my life that reality and my way of life collided with one another. Here I was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, a recovering addict/alcoholic, codependent to the bone and not a clue where I was heading. Joining the church did provide the guidance that I needed and it was there that I found a loving God who would forgive me. I am the oldest of three sons. My mother and father are still alive and preparing to celebrate 50 years of marriage on March 3, 2000. I went from one relationship to another, displaying dysfunctional behavior every where I went and didn't realize that while I thought I was enjoying my life. I was actually ruining it. Living in a car that did not run in a parking lot in Tulare, California, was about as good as it was going to get. I had lost everything. I did not have an idea what recovery was much less that I needed it. I knew something was wrong, but I thought I was being paid back for the lifestyle I had led.

Forty percent of alcoholism is caused by genetic factors and sixty percent by factors we don't understand. If we take identical twins and split them at birth and raise one in Wyoming and one in Ethiopia, if one twin becomes an alcoholic, there is a 40% chance that the other twin will become an alcoholic. Alcoholism runs in families. If you have an alcohol problem it is very likely that other members of your family are addicted. Alcoholism is lethal: Ninety five percent of untreated alcoholics die of alcoholism.

Psychiatric resident Dr. Jon Grant and associate professor Dr. Suck Won Kim, co-investigators in the study, are testing the drug Naltrexone on seven or eight participants in the study. Since late October, only one person has finished the study, but researchers said they are hopeful about the outcome. "The results look very promising," Grant said. Kleptomania, an impulse control disorder that creates an urge to steal, affects approximately 5 percent of shoplifters, said Gary Christenson, director of the mental health clinic at Boynton Health Service. "I expect there are more people out there with the problem than we see clinically," Christenson said.
