These common strivings are yet another example of a loving God, as we understand Him, expressing Himself through the group conscience. Experiences such as these help me to stay on the proper path of recovery. I learn to combine initiative with humility, responsibility with thankfulness, and thus relish the joys of living my twenty-four hour program. SoberShop When I heard that Al-Anon was a program in which we learn to keep the focus on ourselves, I wondered what others would think of me if I acted on that principle? Surely they would think me inconsiderate, thoughtless, and uncaring. Those were my complaints about the alcoholics in my life! I didnt want to be that way. Instead, I tried to do things for others that seemed loving and generous, even when I didnt want to do them. I couldnt understand why I so often grew resentful after such actions.

I started drinking when I was about seventeen. You might say I was an alcoholic, it was so bad that no one knew I was a drunk till the day I stopped drinking. I joined the Navy things got even worse; did you ever hear the old saying (like a drunken sailor)? That was me. I would drink while I drove from bar to bar; I was not really enjoying it. It came to a point that my friends and I would go from bar to bar to start a bar fight, I thank God that no one was killed or enjured seriously. At times on Sunday while others were seeking God I would be in a bar drinking tomato juice and beer for my breakfast. I had a vicious temper and was always looking for a fight. My mouth was like an open sewer with the language I spoke, you would call it fluent profanity. I thought I would live forever till one day my best friend died in a freak accident, then I knew that life was temporary and death was just a heart beat away: I asked myself if I died right now where would I spend eternity. I knew that there was a God out there somewhere and that He had something better for me. The Bible says John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life".
