I decided, after a recent conflict with my boyfriend Josh over this, to create this web page and hopefully completely stop this anorexic madness...hence the name of this page. Josh, may I mention, is such a great guy. He's always been there and I love him so much, and he said that it hurts him when I hurt myself, so in an effort to not force him to break up with me, I am doing my best to get myself back on the right track, and I am hoping that it will work. In 7th and 8th grade, I looked in the mirror, and I hated what I saw. A fat, ugly, disgusting piece of white trash. Don't argue with that if you didn't know me then. I was severely overweight for my age. Though it pains me to say this, I was 175 pounds when I was 13. And I hated that so much. So, after dozens of sleepless nights and crying and feeling sorry for myself, I decided I was going to do something about that. I didn't want to feel like that forever. Now, as I look back, maybe what I decided to do wasn't the bestest of choices, but it did seem to help me as much as many of you don't think it did. I mean, in just a few months I lost 30 pounds, and I guess it was after then that I though, "Ya know, this is seemingly working. Maybe I should continue." But now, I think I just got some sense knocked into me, and I am making a sincere effort to do whatever I possibly can to end this. But it will take time...

Wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet Anorexie "Appetitverlust oder -verminderung" - eine irreführende Bezeichnung, da nicht unbedingt der Appetit, sondern in erster Linie das Essverhalten gestört ist. Der Zusatz "nervosa" weist auf die psychischen Ursachen der Essstörung hin. Grundlagen und Ursachen In westlichen Gesellschaften hat sich das Schönheitsideal seit Anfang der 60er Jahre immer mehr in Richtung eines sehr schlanken Körpers entwickelt. Paradoxerweise ist es auf der anderen Seite durch relativen Wohlstand und ein Nahrungsüberangebot gleichzeitig zu einem Anstieg des Durchschnittsgewichts gekommen. Übergewicht wird insbesondere bei Frauen gesellschaftlich sehr negativ bewertet. Übergewichtige Männer werden als stattlich bezeichnet, Frauen hingegen als fett. Durch Werbung und Filme erhält man den Eindruck, dass nur schlanke Frauen erfolgreich und beliebt sind, dicke Frauen sind entweder graue Mäuse oder "Ulknudeln". Gerade junge Frauen, die während der Pubertät körperliche Veränderungen durchlaufen und erst ein Gefühl für ihren "neuen" Körper entwickeln müssen, können durch dieses Schlankheitsideal stark verunsichert werden.

A person with anorexia nervosa may define obesity as a weight gain of five pounds, from 89 to 94. A grandmother past menopause may call herself obese because she carries 165 pounds on her large-boned, muscular body. A modeling agency may talk about obesity when one of the women on the payroll puts 135 pounds on her 5'10" body. None of these women is clinically obese. The anorexic and the model are underweight. Men are split in their personal definitions of obesity. Physicians consider a person to obese if s/he weighs more than 20% above expected weight for age, height, and body build. Morbid or malignant obesity is weight in excess of 100 pounds above that expected for age, height, and build.
